Heart transplantation surgery in children and young adults with congenital heart disease
No full textBackground: Pediatric cardiac transplantation remains a surgical challenge as a variety of cardiac and vessel malformation are present in patients with congenital heart disease (CHD). Despite limited availability and acceptability of donor hearts, the number of heart transplantations remains on a stable level with improved survival and quality of life. Observation: As treatment options for CHD continue to improve and the chances of survival increase, more adult CHD patients are listed for transplantation. This review focuses on the clinical challenges and modified techniques of pediatric heart transplantations. Conclusion: Not only knowledge of the exact anatomy, but above all careful planning, interdisciplinary cooperation and surgical experience are prerequisites for surgical success

Ursprünglich verkörperte der honnête homme die Werte des höfischen Lebens, geprägt von Mäßigung, Höflichkeit und einem normgeleiteten Verhalten, das Überraschungen und Exzesse mied. Im Laufe der Zeit wird diese Figur jedoch kritisch hinterfragt, insbesondere in der Reiseliteratur. Hier wird das Reisen als Mittel zur Erweiterung des Horizonts und zur Überwindung der provinziellen Enge dargestellt. Die Reiseliteratur fördert eine Neugier auf das Unbekannte und Exotische und wertet die starren gesellschaftlichen Normen ab, die den honnête homme prägten

Metaanalyse der relativen Performance von Venture-Capital-finanzierten Unternehmen
No full textIn this study, we perform a meta-analysis on existing research covering the relationship between a venture capitalist’s involvement (VCI) and the performance (P) of funded firms. As research on this topic has been inconclusive, we aim to determine whether providers of venture capital (VC) only possess superior scouting capabilities or whether they can also provide additional value beyond the simple endowment of financial resources. Furthermore, we determine whether the nature of the institutions in the funded firms’ home countries, in terms of institutional quality and financial market efficiency, is a critical factor in the VCI – P relationship. We argue that a venture capitalist’s decision to actively engage in its portfolio firms and provide value beyond capital depends on the quality of formal institutions and the likelihood of achieving a successful exit. We test our arguments using a meta-analytical approach on a dataset of 984 effect sizes in 15 individual countries. Our results show that venture capitalists have advantages stemming from superior selection and guidance capabilities. In addition, our results confirm that higher quality of formal institutions and the efficiency of the financial market in the startups’ home countries strengthen the VCI – P relationship. In essence, we help corroborate arguments from the resource-based view, which suggest that the success of a VCI depends on institutional factors.In dieser Studie wird eine Metaanalyse der gegenwärtig vorliegenden Forschung durchgeführt, die sich mit der Beziehung zwischen der Venture Capital-Beteiligung (VCI) und der Performance (P) der finanzierten Unternehmen befasst. Da die Forschungsergebnisse zu diesem Thema nicht eindeutig sind, wird untersucht, ob Anbieter von Venture Capital ihre Portfoliobeteiligungen nur besser auswählen oder ob sie auch über die bloße Ausstattung mit finanziellen Mitteln hinaus einen Mehrwert, z. B. durch aktives Engagement, generieren können. Darüber hinaus soll ermittelt werden, ob die Art der Institutionen in den Heimatländern der finanzierten Unternehmen hinsichtlich ihrer Qualität und Finanzmarkteffizienz einen Einfluss auf die Beziehung zwischen VCI und P hat. Es wird argumentiert, dass die Entscheidung eines Risikokapitalgebers, über das Kapital hinaus Unterstützung zu leisten, von der Qualität der formalen Institutionen und der Wahrscheinlichkeit eines erfolgreichen Exits abhängt. Diese Argumente werden mit Hilfe eines metaanalytischen Ansatzes anhand von 984 Effektgrößen aus 15 einzelnen Ländern getestet. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass Risikokapitalgeber Vorteile haben, die sich

Physicians' Social Skills – Conceptualization, Taxonomy, and Behavioral Assessment
No full textSocial skills (e.g., assertiveness, empathy, ability to accept criticism) are essential for the medical profession and therefore also for the selection and development of medical students. However, the term "social skills" is understood differently in different contexts. There is no agreed upon taxonomy for classifying physicians' social skills, and skills with the same meaning often have different names. This conceptual ambiguity presents a hurdle to cross-context communication and to the development of methods to assess social skills. Drawing from behavioral psychology, we aim to contribute to a better understanding of social skills in the medical context. To this end, we introduce a theoretically and empirically informed taxonomy that can be used to integrate the large number of different social skills. We consider how skills manifest at the behavioral level to ensure that we focus only on skills that are actually observable, distinguishable, and measurable. Here, behavioral research has shown that three overarching skill dimensions can be seen in interpersonal situations and are clearly distinguishable from each other: agency skill (i.e., getting ahead in social situations), communion skill (i.e., getting along in social situations), and interpersonal resilience (i.e., staying calm in social situations). We show that almost all social skills relevant for physicians fit into this structure. The approach presented allows redundant descriptions to be combined under three clearly distinguishable and behavior-based dimensions of social skills. This approach has implications for the assessment of social skills in both the selection and development of students

Qualitative Cost-Benefit Analysis of Corona Vaccinations and Vaccine Mandate
No full textCOVID-19 führt seit zwei Jahren weltweit zu schweren Erkrankungen, Todesfällen und drastischen Gegenmaßnahmen. Mit sehr schnell entwickelten Impfstoffen haben sich viele Menschen in Deutschland impfen lassen. Zur weiteren Erhöhung der Impfquote wird über eine zuvor ausgeschlossene Impfpflicht intensiv diskutiert. Eine qualitative Kosten-Nutzen-Analyse spricht dagegen, da zumindest subjektiv die Kosten für einige Ungeimpfte erheblich sind und auch nach intersubjektiven Kriterien der Nettonutzen einer Impfung nicht für jeden eindeutig positiv ist. Die Wohlfahrt ist höher bei individuellen Wahlmöglichkeiten, z. B. nach einem Beratungsgespräch, durch eine Prämie fürs freiwillige Impfen oder umgekehrt mit einer Geldzahlung Ungeimpfter zum Ausgleich der Kosten anderer aus der unterlassenen Impfung.COVID-19 has led to serious illnesses, deaths and drastic countermeasures around the world
for two years. Many people in Germany have been vaccinated with very rapidly developed
vaccines. In order to further increase the vaccination quota, a previously excluded vaccine
mandate is being discussed intensively. A qualitative cost-benefit analysis speaks against such
a mandate, since at least subjectively the costs for some unvaccinated people are considerable
and, even according to intersubjective criteria, the net benefit of a vaccination is not clearly
positive for everyone. The welfare is higher with individual choices, for example after a
consultation, through a premium for voluntary vaccination or, conversely, with a monetary
payment by unvaccinated people to compensate for the costs to others from the failure to
vaccinate
Right to the City
No full textHow is the right to the city relevant for health for all and how does it already unfold in concrete practices of urban grassroots movements? How do the diverse structures of health inequalities unfold on the urban scale? How do urban movements address these inequalities through collective action and political struggles? This polylogue presents insights from a roundtable discussion with critical urban scholars and health activists on health as right to the city. The discussion took place at the Radical Health Conference 2021 in Berlin. From the perspective of critical urban theory, Anke Strüver from the University of Graz explains the urban roots of health inequalities and their unequal embodiments. Vasilis Tsapas provides an activist account of how (health) inequalities are addressed in the everyday work of the Solidarity Clinic in Thessaloniki, a radical democratic and anti-hierarchical urban health collective. Andreas Exner as an activist scholar stresses the importance of radical democratic collaborations of right-to-the-city movements and grassroots health initiatives for health equality. Bettina Franke and Jonas Löwenberg from the community healthcare center Poliklinik Leipzig highlight the role of interdisciplinary work and the empowerment of local communities in approaching people’s health from the bottom-up. Following this, the Critical Urban Research Group Münster emphasizes the role of urban space as an important scale for collective transformations of structural health inequalities in the sense of health as a right to the city. The Merchant from Patristics to the Honnête Homme in the Writings of Savary
No full textDer Text untersucht die Entwicklung des Bildes des Kaufmanns von den frühen christlichen Theologen (Patristik) bis hin zum Konzept des honnête homme im 17. Jahrhundert, insbesondere in den Schriften von Jacques Savary. Ursprünglich negativ bewertet, wurde der Kaufmann als von Gier getrieben und moralisch fragwürdig dargestellt. Im Laufe der Zeit änderte sich dieses Bild jedoch, besonders durch den Einfluss von Handelspraktiken und der wachsenden Anerkennung der Nützlichkeit des Handels für das Gemeinwohl. Savary betont in seinen Schriften die Tugenden des idealen Kaufmanns, darunter Effizienz, Wissen und Anstand, wobei der Handel als wesentlicher Faktor für den gesellschaftlichen Wohlstand und die Völkerverständigung betrachtet wird.The document explores the evolution of the image of the merchant from early Christian theologians (Patristics) to the concept of the honnête homme in the 17th century, particularly in the writings of Jacques Savary.
