Together or Apart - Populist Perceptions on an Institutionalized EU Migration Approach

    No full text
The following paper aims to answer the question, how do national populist movements perceive an institutionalized approach to migration on an EU level? Maintaining International Relations relevancy, the puzzle at heart is eminent with its acknowledgement of national-populist parties in relation to EU collaboration, specifically in reference to the issue of migration. Thus, the paper establishes the central argument that populist discourse establishes the EU as a constituent of the elite, projecting a nationalist agenda on migration rather than cooperating and maintaining a collective identity through the institution. Constituting contra-camp identities between the institution and its citizens whilst addressing issues at the EU level, ultimately influences transnational relations. The paper presents the cases of Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia who have arguably held populist governments during or following the migration crisis 2015/2016. Implementing a poststructural framework in collaboration with a populist ‘theory’ or paradigm, a set of quantitative analyses are enlisted, featured as a ‘backdrop’ for the discursive practices and context stage of the prominent CDA analyses. Conclusively, the results find a noticeable critique toward the EU migration approach, where the institution is recognized as an ‘elitist’ establishment maintaining opposing values to ‘the people’ and favoring migration

A comparative study of the Danish and Swedish migration policies

    No full text
Within the last ten years, the once so liberal Swedish migration policy has transformed and drawn nearer to the more strict Danish counterpart. The present thesis contributes with a thorough and systematic comparison of the current migration policies of Denmark and Sweden, focusing specifically on the entry of migrants. The results of the study show that the two countries’ current policies are, in fact, quite alike. However, regarding both labour migration, asylum, and family reunification, the most significant difference between the two migration policies concerns migrants’ access to permanent residency, which is substantially deprived in Denmark compared to Sweden. The inequal access to permanency may have negative consequences for the well-being of, especially, refugees. Moreover, this difference in access to permanent residency, as well as other minor differences between the policies, may be explained by differences in the theoretical reasoning underlying the Danish and Swedish migration policies, respectively

    A neighborhood in change

    No full text
When neighborhoods and cities fall in decline, cities and investors see an opportunity to turn the declining sites into profitable new projects, this happens all over the world in different renewal projects, or under the term gentrification. The outcome of gentrification can be considered to be both positive and negative, and the term is widely discussed in today's media. This study aims to get an understanding of how a small neighborhood in Cape Town called Bo-Kaap, that is famous for its rich culture and strong community, is affected by investors wanting to develop the neighborhood. With a problematic history of apartheid and oppression the threat of gentrification creates a new threat for the residents of Bo-Kaap. During the last couple of years the property prices in the neighborhood have increased dramatically resulting in a large flow of new residents. This has caused many locals to fear for the safety of the neighborhood as well as the fear of losing its strong community and their identity as a muslim neighborhood

Digitaliseringens påverkan på veckotidningsbranschen – En fallstudie på företaget Aller media

    No full text
Due to the obvious impact of digitalisation on the magazine industry in combination with lack of previous scientific studies on the subject - this study seeks to increase the knowledge and understanding of how the phenomenon of digitalisation has affected companies in the magazine industry. The purpose of the study is primarily to investigate how the company Aller media and its business models have been affected by digitalisation. To investigate this, two qualitative interviews were initially conducted with two managers at Aller media. The interviews were then supplemented with a web survey that were answered by Aller medias employees. The results from the data collection methods show that digitalisation has had a significant impact on Aller media with both positive and negative consequences. In total, Aller media has adapted well since digitalization and with the adoption of new digital business models the company has laid a good basis for remaining relevant in an increasingly digitalized future

The mental health of unaccompanied minors- In the Swedish asylum-seeking process

    No full text
This thesis explores social workers' perspectives on unaccompanied minors’ mental health and their experiences during their asylum process in Sweden. Conducting in-depth semi-structured interviews and applying stress appraisal and a sense of coherence theories, the thesis sought to understand what experiences and challenges the unaccompanied minors confront during their asylum process. And how that impact their well-being and mental health condition. The results show social workers perceptions, on how the Swedish asylum process produced psychological stress, anxiety, sleep difficulties, lack of abilities to cope with stressful situations, traumas, and behavioral changes for the unaccompanied minors' well-being. As indicated by the researcher, the unaccompanied minors undergoing the asylum procedure are exposed to a low sense of coherence and mental health problems

Leadership in the English classroom in Sweden

    No full text
The concept of teacher leadership plays a crucial role when improving global educational systems. In the Swedish education system, teacher leadership is critical to the delivery of the English language instructions. However, the types of leadership styles, factors to be considered, the strategies, and rules used by English teachers to be effective classroom leaders are generally under-researched. Moreover, English language instruction in Sweden is affected by serious issues of concern—such as lack of clear guidelines and inadequate teacher training. In light of these problems, this study aims at identifying the types of leadership styles, causes of leadership failure, factors that affect leadership styles, and the rules and strategies utilised by teachers to become effective leaders in the Swedish education system. To provide answers to this objective, a qualitative approach that used interviews from four participants was utilised. The results show that the interviewees were concerned that there appeared to be no specific teacher leadership in their professional training. In this case, interviewees claimed that the type of leadership depends on the group of students and prevailing situations. It was also found that lack of confidence, inconvenience decisions, and not understanding students contributed to leadership failure, while understanding and engaging learners, staying positive, being sensitive, and establishing a positive mind-set are the common strategies used by English teachers to become effective leaders. These findings are crucial because they will add value to the existing literature, particularly the literature on studies that focus on teacher leadership in the Swedish English classroom

    Mixed-initiative quest generation

    No full text
Ever since the 1960s the idea of a symbiotic partnership between computer and man has been laid out, suggesting a partnership can provide solutions better than man alone can. This symbiotic relationship has been branched out to procedural content generation (PCG), through it’s “mixed initiative” approach, taking turns to provide suggestions. Within game development, some content is better created by a generator, and some by a human. This research focuses on applying the mixed initiative approach in quest creation in dungeon games, through an artefact that lets the user create quests in “Evolutionary dungeon designer” (EDD) to design dungeons in dungeon games. The artefact developed uses a generator to provide the user with automatic generated suggestions. The generator has been evaluated through an expressive range experiment to investigate the dominance of the actions which acts like building blocks for the quests. In addition to the experiment a user study was conducted. The result of the user study was that the experiences relating to the artefact were positive. A majority of the participants experienced increased creativity and described the artefact as a resource efficient tool for game developers, providing fast solutions and helping reduce inspirational blockages

Dialektala problem i modern standardarabisk skrift för arabiska elever i modersmålsundervisning

    No full text

Food insecurity in Nigeria - An analysis of the impact of climate change, economic development, and conflict on food security

    No full text
Food insecurity is a major problem in Nigeria. The Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that Nigeria’s food security situation has worsened in the past 15 years. This thesis examines the impacts of different factors that jeopardize the Nigerian food security situation. According to previous literature, there are mostly three factors that affect food security; climate change, economic development, and violent conflict. Nigeria is the chosen case study because all the above mentioned factors play a key role in the country; it is affected by climate change, the economy is fluctuating and there has been the Boko Haram insurgency going on since 2009. This thesis aims, with the help of the concept of food security, to analyze these factors to see whether and to what extent they influence food insecurity in Nigeria. The thesis uses a mixed-methods approach. Quantitative data are retrieved from several databases that give measurements on food security, climate change, economy, and conflict. Qualitative data are reports and interviews that were conducted with Nigerian NGO’s. Cautious findings show that all three factors can lead to food insecurity and, therefore, can explain why there is food insecurity in Nigeria. Finally, this paper concludes and confirms the results of existing research in the case of Nigeria
