Researching sensitive topics: Adjusting cultural probes to research and identify design spaces for sensitive HCI.
Research tools to identify sensitive topics and thus new opportunities to design for have grown in popularity in the last twenty years within HCI, with many projects and areas to note. However, the research tools used are still underdeveloped (Crabtree, 2003), and many universal designs of the 20th century have failed to develop for more sensitive areas, bar the conventional young, non-disabled, white, cis-male (Clarkson, 2003). The topics discussed in the thesis are reviews and arguments for the use of an adapted cultural probe’s place to research sensitive topics, identify perhaps previously hidden “sensitive-HCI” (Waycott et al. 2015) design spaces. The focus is on the tools to gather data, and discover design opportunities, rather than the particular and actual findings from the study
Hur bidrar interaktionen till andraspråkselevers språkoch kunskapsutveckling?
Den här kunskapsöversikten undersöker olika faktorer som bidrar till andraspråkselevers språk
och kunskapsutveckling. Syftet med arbetet är att undersöka hur olika interaktioner gynnar
elevernas utveckling i skolan. För att undersöka och besvara vår frågeställning har vi gjort
systematiska sökningar. Arbetet utgår från 15 vetenskapliga artiklar samt artiklar från
Skolverket och en granskning från Skolinspektionen.
Vi har valt termen interaktion där vi forskar kring hur det gynnar eleverna i deras skolgång. Å
ena sidan ligger fokus på interaktion i klassrummet mellan lärare och elev. Å andra sidan ligger
fokus på interaktionen som eleverna med varandra.
Resultatet kommer att tydliggöra hur en välplanerad undervisning gynnar andraspråkselevers
språk- och kunskapsutveckling. Det sociokulturella perspektivet är en arbetsform som anses
vara viktig för andraspråkselvers lärande och kommer därför att lyftas fram i resultatet.
Dessutom kommer fördelarna för kooperativt lärande, smågruppsaktiviteter och
studiehandledning kommer även att belysas.
Slutsatsen som dras av resultatet för detta arbete är att läraren och själva skolverksamheten är
två väsentliga faktorer som har en stor inverkan i andraspråkselvers fortsatta lärande.
Modersmålsundervisning är en ytterligare viktig faktor och resurs som kan utnyttjas för
andraspråkselevers språk- och kunskapsutveckling
The securitization of the “boat people” in Australia: The case of Tampa
The thesis will examine how the Australian government through its Prime Minister John
Howard presented the asylum seekers on “MV Tampa” ship as a threat jeopardizing Australian security. Using the theory of securitization as a methodological framework and Critical Discourse Analysis as utilized by Fairclough’s Three-dimensional Framework transcripts of interviews by John Howard will be analyzed in order to expose the securitization process that framed the asylum seekers as an existential threat that needed extraordinary measures
Physical Activity Integrated into Teaching in Schools in Finland
Background:
Physical activity levels have dropped among children worldwide over the past decade, and physical inactivity has become a global public health problem. The majority of the time of a school day is spent sedentarily; therefore, schools and teachers have a significant role affecting the physical activity levels and sedentary time of children.
Aim:
The aim of the study was to examine, describe, and discuss primary school teachers' perceptions and experiences of physical activity integrated into teaching in schools in Finland.
Methods:
Eight Finnish primary school teachers participated in the research. The data was collected by semi-structured interviews conducted online. Thematic analysis was employed to interpret the data collected from the interviews. The phenomenology of perception and the body by Merleau-Ponty was applied as a theoretical framework.
Results:
The teachers had positive perceptions of physical activity integrated into teaching; however, their practices varied slightly between individuals. Teachers had experienced several benefits within the phenomenon. In addition, there were some constraints experienced; however, those restricted teachers only to some extent from integrating physical activity into teaching. The teachers had a positive feeling of their already existing competence; however, all teachers were open to further knowledge and training.
Conclusion:
Most of the teachers have become aware of the effect of accomplishing learning by letting the students use the whole body to embodied knowledge. The results indicate the importance of teacher education to develop and cover the skills required from a teacher in integrating physical activity into teaching
Crisis Communication and the Fashion Industry : Image Repairing in Racially Charged Crises
This thesis brings the study of crisis communication on social media into the studies of
the creative industries and the fashion industry. The aim of this study is to investigate
the crisis communication of the two Italian high fashion brands Prada and Gucci to see
if there are any differences in the way they communicated during two racially charged
crises. By using Benoit’s typology of image repair I conducted an analysis of the
rhetoric of 12 crisis response messages posted on the companies’ official Twitter
profiles. The analysis implies that the two companies follow the recommendations from
previous research regarding the use of corrective action as the preferred crisis response
strategy. However, the results also indicate a common use of mixed strategies.
Limitations in theory suggest that future research is needed. Studies covering racial
issues are always up to date and the topic is often debated on social media where the
fashion industry plays an influential role. Social media is constantly changing due to the
rapid development in communications technology and user behavior. Further research is
therefore encouraged to get a better understanding of the effects of certain crisis
communication strategies and the complexity of these topics
Barn i behov av särskilt stöd i förskolan - Förskollärares arbete med social och fysisk miljö för barn i behov av särskilt stöd
Syftet med vår studie är att undersöka hur förskollärare arbetade med barn i behov av särskilt stöd. I studien undersöktes det om förskollärares syn på anknytning, den fysiska miljön och likvärdighet. Vi använde oss av en kvalitativ metod eftersom vi ansåg att resultatet skulle framhävas. Teorierna vi har använt oss av är det sociokulturella perspektivet med fokus på det relationella arbetet i förskolan. För att fördjupa vår förståelse ytterligare så har vi också analyserat med en strukturnivå och ur en individnivå.
Resultatet i vår studie visar förskollärare tänker olika kring hur anknytningen påverkar relationerna i förskolan men de har en gemensam bild över vad likvärdighet är och hur de kan arbeta med detta. Det framkom även att den fysiska miljön är viktig på förskolan, både ur ett individ- och ett grupperspektiv
Klimatkommunikation under covid-19-pandemin
Att hantera konsekvenserna av klimatförändringarna är en av mänsklighetens största
utmaningar. Forskare, förespråkare och andra aktörer har länge försökt kommunicera till
allmänheten om klimatförändringar, men det tycks vara svårare än väntat. En paradox har
uppstått som innebär att ju mer fakta som presenteras, desto mindre oro. Ett tydligt exempel
på var och hur det kan komma till uttryck är i medier. Ytterligare en global utmaning är den
pågående covid-19-pandemin. I ett tidigt skede observerade vi att medierapporteringen på
olika sätt började koppla samman covid-19-pandemin med klimatförändringarna. Syftet med
denna studie är att undersöka hur klimatkommunikationen tar sig uttryck under covid-19-
pandemin via debattartiklar. Metoden för undersökningen var en latent innehållsanalys och
resultatet analyserades med hjälp av Per Espen Stoknes modell om de fem psykologiska
barriärerna samt teori om strategier inom klimatkommunikation. Resultatet visar att
klimatkommunikationen uttrycktes på olika sätt genom både barriärer och strategier, men att
kommunikationen till överhängande del uttrycktes genom strategier. Studien kan öka
förståelsen för hur klimatförändringar kan kommuniceras för att skapa klimatengagemang
och kan därmed fungera som en språngbräda för fortsatt forskning.Dealing with the consequences of climate change is one of humanity's greatest challenges.
Researchers, advocates and other actors have long tried to communicate to the public about
climate change, but it seems to be more difficult than expected. A paradox has arisen which
means that the more facts that are presented, the less concern. A clear example of where and
how it can be expressed is in the media. Another global challenge is the ongoing covid-19
pandemic. At an early stage, we began to observe how different types of media started to link
the covid-19 pandemic to climate change. Based on the background of climate
communication and this observation, the purpose of this study is to investigate how climate
communication is expressed during the covid-19 pandemic via debate articles. A latent
content analysis was performed and the results was analyzed with Per Espen Stoknes model
on the five psychological barriers and theory on strategies in climate communication. The
results show that climate communication was expressed in different ways through both
barriers and strategies, but mainly through strategies. The study can further increase the
understanding of how climate change can be communicated to create climate commitment
and can thus serve as a springboard for further research
The Role of Bystanders and Enablers in Juvenile Delinquency
There has been serious concerns about the pace at which juvenile criminality is
increasing globally(National Academies Press, 2001).Young people are increasingly
becoming susceptible to a wide variety of misdemeanors; from substance abuse and addiction
to murder (ibid). Studies have empirically described many triggers as the root cause of
juvenile delinquency (Archer, 2000).Some criminologists have attributed these types of
misdemeanors to the environments to which these adolescents are/have been subjected to
(Wikstrom, 2004). On this basis, this research aims to assess the liability, if any, of
bystanders/observers and enablers/facilitators of juvenile delinquency. The study employed a
qualitative approach in evaluating the role of bystanders and enablers in juvenile
delinquency. The outcome revealed that the majority of bystanders and enablers are equally
as guilty as the delinquent youth. Three theories were used to rationalize these findings; the
anomie-strain theory, situational action theory and self control theory ( Chainey & Ratcliffe,
2005). As a result, the study recommends adequate parental guidance, in-person supervision,
parental awareness, governmental inclusion, the provision of social infrastructures as well as
equal opportunities, among others
