    Get PDF
Effective patent portfolio management is essential for preserving competitive advantage and promoting innovation in the fast-evolving high-tech industry. This thesis focuses on providing a decision-making framework for assessing the value of IP assets (patents) that integrates expert elicitation techniques with a quantitative monovariate patent evaluation method. By leveraging the expertise of internal experts to assess the inventions, it is possible to generate a qualitative evaluation of their value to the company, their monetization potential, and their role in a defensive patent strategy, to guarantee that the company remains at the forefront of the market. Through an extensive literature review and insights from semi-structured interviews with internal stakeholders of the IP value assessment (IPVA), this research identified different criteria currently in use to estimate the value of inventions and patents at the case company. Additionally, it proposes ideas to integrate this evaluation into a defensive patent strategy. The research presented a tripartite proposal to generate an expert-based framework for IP value assessment, consisting of: (1) strategies for the development of an expert community who actively participates in the invention examination, (2) a quantitative method for evaluation that assess the invention into five value categories and helps to determine its monetization purpose (licensing, cross-licensing, selling), and (3) strategies to use the value assessment to leverage a defensive patent strategy that benefits the company’s market position. The findings provide IP managers with valuable insights, enabling them to optimize their patent portfolios and align them with broader business objectives

This thesis is about the situation of small-scale wind power in Finland. The most common applications for small-scale wind power are cottages and areas outside the electricity grid. Thesis includes the operating principles of horizontal and vertical axis small-scale wind tur-bines, and the challenges associated with small-scale wind power. The challenges include low wind speeds, the importance of the location of the turbines, and high costs. Typically, a small-scale wind turbine is not economically viable. However, small-scale wind power can be an option in sparsely populated areas where connecting to the electricity grid can be ex-pensive

Toisena tutkimusmetodina toteutetaan haastattelututkimus Itä-Suomessa hitsaaviin yrityksiin. Haastattelututkimus tuo konkreettisia esimerkkejä vastuullisemmista ratkaisuista hitsaavassa tuotannossa kirjallisuuskatsauksen tueksi. Keskeisin hitsaavaan tuotantoon vaikuttava ympäristöstandardi on ympäristöjärjestelmiä käsittelevä ISO 14001 -standardi. Ympäristöstandardit vaikuttavat hitsaavassa tuotannossa erityisesti päästöjen ja energiatehokkuuden mittaamiseen, ympäristönäkökohtiin prosessien suunnittelussa sekä elinkaaren arviointiin. ESG-raportointi lisää yrityksen läpinäkyvyyttä ympäristöasioissa, mikä tehostaa vastuullisuuden kehittämistä. Hitsausprosessien valinnalla, materiaalikierrolla ja prosessien optimoinnilla huomattiin olevan suuri vaikutus hitsaavan tuotannon päästöihin ja energiatehokkuuteen. This bachelor's thesis explores environmental standards and sustainability reporting related to welding production, as well as their impact on the technical design of welding processes. In addition, it examines how environmental standards and sustainability reporting can be integrated into welding production without compromising production efficiency. The study is conducted using two research methods. First, a literature review is used to familiarize with the environmental standards and sustainability reporting associated with welding production. The literature review also investigates their impact on the design of production processes, particularly from the perspectives of energy efficiency and emission management and reduction. The second research method is an interview study conducted with welding companies in Eastern Finland. The interview study provides concrete examples of more sustainable solutions in welding production to support the literature review findings. The key environmental standard affecting welding production is the ISO 14001 environmental management standard. Environmental standards influence welding production particularly in the measurement of emissions and energy efficiency, consideration of environmental aspects in process design, and life cycle assessment. ESG reporting increases corporate transparency in environmental matters, enhancing the development of sustainability. The choice of welding processes, material circulation, and process optimization were found to have a significant impact on emissions and energy efficiency in welding production

Tarkoituslähtöiset brändit Instagramissa : yhteiskunnallinen kantaa ottaminen ja kuluttajien sitoutuminen

The objective of this thesis is to examine the characteristics of purpose-driven brands’ stance-taking Instagram posts and investigate how consumers engage with these posts. The term “purpose-driven brands” refers to brands that do not solely focus on generating large financial profits, but they have a deeper meaning (Narayanan & Das 2022, 521). Brands can show their meaningfulness in several different ways, but this thesis focuses on investigating brands that take a public stance on societal issues (Wettstein & Baur 2016, 200). Purpose-driven brands are still a quite unexplored field of study in academic literature (Narayanan & Das 2022, 520), so this research provides valuable new insights about the topic. The research was conducted as a qualitative case study. Ben and Jerry’s, a US-based ice cream brand, was selected as a case company. The data was collected manually from Ben and Jerry’s main Instagram account, and it was analyzed by conducting an inductive content analysis. The research indicates that a purpose-driven brand can take a stance on multiple different issues and there can be several different stance-taking processes going on simultaneously. Stance-taking posts are typically videos or text carousels, and they commonly deliver either relational or informational content. When it comes to customer engagement, it seems that topical and controversial issues gained the highest amount of engagement. Most of the topics seemed to get more positive than negative comments, but the results, however, indicate that the brand’s stance-taking strongly divides people’s opinions. Thus, it can be said that stance-taking may help the brand to build tighter relationships with their customers, but, on the other hand, it may also alienate some consumers (Weinzimmer & Esken 2016, 208; 334).Tämän pro-gradu -tutkielman tavoitteena on tarkastella tarkoituslähtöisten brändien kantaaottavien Instagram-julkaisujen ominaispiirteitä sekä tutkia miten kuluttajat reagoivat kyseisiin julkaisuihin.

    Water footprint of crop products

Tämän kandidaatintyön tavoitteena on tarkastella, kuinka viljatuotteiden vesijalanjälki muodostuu. Työ on toteutettu kirjallisuuskatsauksena. The aim of this Bachelor's thesis is to examine how the water footprint of crop products is formed. The study is based on literature review. The theoretical section of the thesis introduces the concept of the water footprint, its components, and calculation methods. The study examines the role of crop products from different perspectives, the cultivation process of spring crop, and the production processes of the selected crop products: beer, oat milk, pasta, and bread. The thesis investigates the water footprint of spring crop cultivation and the water footprints of different crop products. These footprints are compared with values found in various sources, and factors influencing the magnitude of the water footprint are identified. The water footprint of spring crop cultivation is determined to be between 667–778 l/kg. The water footprints of crop products ranged from approximately 270–1300 l/kg. For each product, cultivation accounts for the largest portion of the water footprint. Therefore, the most significant factors influencing the water footprint of a crop product are the amount of grain required for its production and the grain content of the final product

With the rapid expansion of the demand for automatic identification of floral species, although traditional flower recognition and classification models have made considerable progress, they still struggle to fully capture the fine-grained morphological differences. Based on this, this study focuses on a core issue: Can the new attention mechanism and Vision Mamba architecture significantly improve the performance of the traditional YOLOv8 algorithm on the floral recognition dataset? This study is oriented towards the fine-grained visual classification scenario and designs and implements an efficient flower recognition system. The Oxford Flowers-102 dataset is used as the benchmark. Subsequently, under the YOLOv8 framework, the lightweight YOLOv8n-cls, performance-balanced YOLOv8m-cls, and two improved models that integrate SE attention mechanism and Vision Mamba state space module are trained respectively. Experimental results show that YOLOv8n-cls achieves an accuracy of 98.20\% with only 2.7M parameters; YOLOv8m-cls boosts the accuracy to 99.18\% and the inference time to only 3.7ms; after introducing SE attention, the accuracy further increases to 99.45\%; when Vision Mamba is combined with YOLOv8m-cls, the accuracy climbs to 99.77\% and the Top-5 accuracy to 99.97\%, fully verifying the significant benefit of global dependency modeling for flower detail discrimination. According to the results, the reseaech question is validated. To facilitate the implementation of the algorithm, we have also developed a Gradio Web interface that supports switching between Chinese and English, enabling rapid loading of model weights and real-time inference. This provides an easy-to-use and highly accurate tool for education, horticulture, and biodiversity conservation

For many chemical processes, it is important to prevent unwanted chemical reactions, remove contaminants, and ensure process safety. Due to its abundance in the atmosphere and inert properties, nitrogen gas provides a cheap and viable alternative to ensure that these factors are met. Depending on the applications and scale of consumption, selecting a suitable nitrogen production method grants the most economically feasible way to produce it. This bachelor’s thesis investigates the nitrogen gas consumption in production units at Borealis Polymers Oy’s Kilpilahti site. In addition, the thesis examines the different production methods for nitrogen production with the safety aspect in mind in the form of a literature review. The aim of this thesis was to investigate and determine nitrogen consumption and recognize any discrepancies in the Borealis’ mass balances. The mass balances were calculated with the help of online meters and P&ID charts. With the results it can be concluded that the average inflow to production units is ~1880 kg/h and the yearly consumed amount is 15 M kg with the price tag of ~3 M€ per year. With additional examination of mass flow an uncalibrated flowmeter was found. The discrepancies in the flowmeter acted differently in different flow ranges, but a depiction of the discrepancies was made with flow-group division and prediction intervals.
