A “Scary Time” to be a Man? Comparing Men’s Engagement with Anti-Sexual Violence Discourses in the Private and Public Sphere
The prevalence of sexual misconduct and its consequences for individuals and society remain pressing issues in the United States. While the #MeToo movement has emerged as a prominent response to these challenges, it has faced criticism for emphasizing a singular survivor narrative. Similarly, the study and theorization of sexual violence within sociology have remained limited in scope. This work extends empirical and theoretical perspectives on sexual misconduct by analyzing #MeToo’s utilization in Twitter1 posts from 2017 to 2022, as well as how individuals discuss sexual misconduct in relation to the movement. Additionally, I examine the influence of gender, race, and sexuality on men’s perceptions of and responses to allegations of sexual misconduct. Using a qualitative content analysis of 86 original Twitter posts, multimodal critical discourse analysis (MCDA) of 388 replies, and 20 interviews with men, this study analyzes perceptions in both digital and physical spaces. The findings reveal that Twitter users have used #MeToo to support, challenge, hijack, and promote the #MeToo movement. Two polarized discourses emerge from user responses: “fuck the bad guys” and “don’t be a victim.” Moreover, three styles of men’s engagement with discussions of sexual misconduct are identified: the Accused, the Survivors, and the Dialoguers. These findings carry significant implications. Furthermore, the study underscores the need for an intersectional approach to sexual misconduct, particularly regarding how gender and race shape whose perspectives are amplified, who is seen as a victim or perpetrator, perceptions of accusations, and the experiences of those accused. Behavioral Ecology and Physiology of Spotted Turtles (Clemmys guttata) in a Fragmented and Polluted Landscape
Turtles are one of the most threatened groups of animals across the globe. This is especially true for freshwater turtles that rely on multiple habitats to fulfill their life history requirements. Wetlands are a crucial habitat type for many freshwater turtle species, and this ecosystem has been susceptible to conversion, fragmentation, and pollution. In turn, these hazards to wetland habitats threaten already declining freshwater turtle populations. The spotted turtle (Clemmys guttata) is a species of freshwater turtle that is particularly at-risk due to life history traits as well as habitat fragmentation and pollution. This study aims to investigate the effects of these ecological threats by focusing on two populations of spotted turtles in northwestern Indiana. In this region, spotted turtle populations are disjunct and isolated due to wetland loss and degradation. The behavioral and physiological responses to habitat loss and ecological contamination have yet to be studied in spotted turtles. This thesis aims to fill this knowledge gap through two studies. The first chapter of this thesis examines spotted turtle behavioral ecology by quantifying home range and seasonal movement, as well as describing overwintering behavior through thermal ecology. Home range sizes were within range but on the lower end of other spotted turtle spatial ecology studies, and seasonal movement patterns were significantly higher in the spring than summer or fall. Thermal profiles suggest that spotted turtles in this study hibernate just below the surface of shallow pools, which is not necessarily the same across their range. The second chapter uses conservation physiology to assess whether spotted turtle health varies with heavy metal concentration (HMC), site, and/or months of the active season. Our results show that spotted turtle health does not vary significantly with HMCs for most physiological variables; however, many vary between sites and across months. These results suggest that despite spotted turtles carrying significant heavy metal burdens, their physiology responds to seasonal changes like other healthy turtle populations. Overall, these two spotted turtle populations in northwestern Indiana are not significantly hindered by their fragmented and polluted landscape. Future studies should use these findings as a baseline as they continue to explore the behavior and physiology of spotted turtles in fractured habitats. These efforts are critical to informing conservation initiatives that eventually become management plans that will protect this endangered species
Pathways to Compassion: Mapping Gender-Affirming Healthcare Experiences
Project Description
Overview: This research project examines how transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) individuals experience healthcare in religiously affiliated healthcare systems, particularly within Catholic institutions. The project aims to identify gaps, barriers, and best practices in gender-affirming care delivery through surveys and interviews with TGNC patients, their loved ones, healthcare providers, and community members.
The goal is to develop a comprehensive workflow map that provides actionable recommendations for improving care, enhancing provider competency, and fostering more inclusive institutional policies. Ultimately, this project seeks to ensure that faith-based healthcare systems can better meet the needs of TGNC patients while delivering compassionate, patient-centered care.

Encouraging Exploration: How Facilitation Supports Children\u27s STEM Talk in Museums
Our research is aimed at understanding educational practices that can support children’s early STEM learning in informal educational settings, including museums. Program design and facilitation strategies used by museum staff can promote conversations about STEM concepts (Mohabir et al., 2021) and provide opportunities for increased parent-child engagement while tinkering (Letourneau et al., 2021). Our study examines how family engagement in an orientation provided by museum staff at the outset of a tinkering activity, as well as facilitation as families engaged in tinkering might support children’s STEM talk during and after a tinkering activity
The Effects of Dating Apps on Self-Esteem and Relationships Among Gen Z Users
Dating apps have revolutionized how Gen Z forms romantic connections by replacing organic in-person interactions with online ones. Platforms like Tinder and Hinge seem to facilitate access to a wide dating pool, and past studies show that users report having average experiences on these apps and continued use despite often feeling frustrated with the dating pool. However, one quick look at social media will show us an ocean of horror stories from people who have tried these dating apps. This study attempts to fill the gaps in past studies by researching and analyzing the effects of dating apps on Gen Z’s self-esteem and their perceptions of relationships. After concluding that past research lacked personal stories, I opted for a mixed methodology approach. The online surveys and single-person interviews that were conducted gave me quantitative and qualitative insights that highlighted both the positive and the negative experiences of dating app users. The results led me to a few key findings: First, users believe that dating apps have negative effects on their mental health, yet they constantly use them for validation. Second, heterosexual women refuse to make the first move, but they believe that men are discouraged from interacting with them out of fear of being accused of harassment. Third, despite their dating app usage, Gen Z still has hope to find an organic relationship but they believe that Gen Alpha might destigmatize relationships that come from dating apps. By extending our understanding of how digital platforms shape societal norms and relationship dynamics, these insights can help developers, users, public relations professionals, and mental health professionals address the challenges caused by dating app usage
Electric Stimulation Treatment for Anorexia Nervosa: from Modern Treatments to bench study with Aplysia californica
Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a mental disorder characterized by the practice of extreme diets that results in low bone density and weight loss. Aside from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and psychiatric therapy, deep brain stimulation (DBS) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) stimulation have started to yield greater promise and effectiveness. We will review the clinical cases using electric stimulation in treating AN. We will also provide evidence that demonstrate the switching of feeding motor programming in Aplysia californica by electric stimulation and magnetic stimulation. Our work is essential in establishing Aplysia as a valuable model for studying the cellular and molecular basis of treatment of Anorexia nervosa with DBS and TMS
Comparing Human Skeletal Collections at Loyola University Chicago: Impacts on Education and Research
Collections of human skeletal remains reflect a long history of exploitation and marginalization, issues that body donation seeks to alleviate. Through comparing remains purchased from biological supply companies in the 1960-70’s by Loyola’s Anthropology Department with skeletons from the National Body Donor Program, I aim to explore whether differences impact education and research. Age at death and sex were estimated for 36 skeletons; present pathological conditions were noted. Results indicate that donor skeletons are significantly older with more chronic conditions. However, both collections display the inextricable links between lived experiences and disease processes. Emphasizing each individual’s history is essential
Do Individual Differences Impact How a Child Learns from Gesture?
Gestures are hand movements that accompany speech and express information. Research suggests gestures support learning in various domains, but not all individuals benefit equally. This study examines how individual differences, such as working memory, prior knowledge, and the propensity to see gesture as meaningful, shape learning outcomes from seeing versus doing gestures to learn the concept of linear measurement. We focus on measurement because it is a pillar of early math education that many children in the U.S. struggle to master. Our results will have implications for how gesture can be used most effectively as a teaching tool
Influence of Residue Charge on Peptide Structure and Metal Ion Binding in EF-Hand Motifs
Lanthanides (Ln3+) are of significant importance given their crucial role in modern technology and medicine. However, the process of extracting, isolating, and purifying these elements is prone to challenges. Lanmodulin (LanM), a novel Ln3+-binding protein is capable of selective Ln3+ binding through its EF-hand motifs.1-2 This selectivity is largely attributed to acidic residues in the EF-hand loop. Herein, we present molecular insights into the effect of varying negative charges in a prototypical EF-hand motif on its binding affinity to La³⁺, where the obtained insights could be helpful for future molecular designs of various purposes

This is important because the problem stems from accessibility challenges, general awareness, and the growing need for more fitness positivity.
We identified eight research objectives focused around consumer behavior, engagement patterns, emerging trends, influencer impact, platform effectiveness, accessibility barriers, brand positioning, and market opportunities to acquire the information necessary to advance the research.
