Investigating the Stabilization Degree in Cold Temperatures of the Microtubule Associated Protein SPM-1 of the Malaria Parasite Plasmodium.
The protozoan malaria parasite Plasmodium maintains its cellular shape with a network of cytoskeletal structures under its plasma membrane known as the subpellicular complex. Microtubules play a key part in this stabilizing complex. The novel microtubule inner proteins SPM-1and TrxL-1 are hypothesized to form stabilization complexes inside the microtubules for regulation and structural reinforcement. My project investigates the role of SPM-1 in microtubule stabilization by utilizing a human cell line as a model system. The results of my research will give us new insights into the adaptive mechanisms of the malaria parasite
Symbolic Significance of Pachuco and Teddy Boy Fashion
This poster examines how self-presentation among Pachucos and Teddy Boys subcultures served as a claim for recognition and a form of protest. By analyzing both subgroups’ formation and key elements to the style itself, I argue how their self-presentation represents the making of a claim to their historical and socioeconomic contexts. My hypothesis suggests that these distinct sartorial choices reflect collective discontent and critiques of social and political injustices. This supports the argument that making a political or moral claim is beyond discursive articulation and that one can express said claims outwardly through clothing choices, hairstyles, and makeup

“Nourish Chicago: Cultivating Health and Sustainability in Low-Income Communities through Accessible Education and Engaging Activities” seeks to improve nutritional literacy and sustainable food choices by educating communities on natural food dyes as healthier alternatives to artificial colorants. Participants learn about the chemical characteristics, health advantages, and culinary uses of plant-based pigments like turmeric, hibiscus, beetroot, and butterfly pea flower through engaging food science workshops and demonstrations. Practical tests demonstrate food preparation, color stability, and pH sensitivity, enabling people to make educated nutritional decisions. This project promotes lifelong scientific literacy and improved eating habits by increasing awareness of food color substitutes
Caregivers’ Verbal and Nonverbal Input on Spanish-English Bilingual Children’s Word Learning
We examined the relation of caregivers’ verbal and nonverbal input on bilingual children’s word learning. 45 caregiver-child dyads (Female=17) were video-recorded (75-minutes). At child-age 18-months (M=18.68; SD=1.12), caregivers’ non-verbal input was coded as communicative hand/head movements (gestures). Caregivers’ verbal input was words used and verbal responses to children’s gestures. At child-age 24-months (M=36.90; SD=0.66), word learning was calculated as words produced (video-recorded, caregiver report). Analyses showed caregivers’ nonverbal input was related to children’s Spanish words (p \u3c 0.05). On-going analyses examine the relation of caregivers’ verbal input on children’s words
The Other-Race Effect in Racial Minority Infants
The other-race effect (ORE) refers to perceptual biases favoring own-race faces over other-race faces, emerging by nine months of age. Studying the ORE is crucial, as it may shape the development of social categories and contribute to racial biases, prejudices, and stereotypes throughout childhood and adulthood. Multiple factors influence the ORE, including community diversity, language exposure, and social experiences. Research suggests that infants raised in racially homogeneous environments are more likely to exhibit the ORE than those growing up in diverse settings.
A key limitation of existing ORE research is its predominant focus on majority-race infants, leaving a gap in understanding how the effect manifests in racially underrepresented populations. This study investigates the ORE in 43 underrepresented 9- to 12-month-old infants from racially diverse communities across the United States. The primary goal is to examine ORE development in infants from minority racial backgrounds within predominantly heterogeneous populations.
We hypothesize that infants from underrepresented racial minority backgrounds will not demonstrate the ORE when viewing own-race or majority-race faces. However, we expect these infants to exhibit the ORE when viewing faces of other racial minority groups, likely due to limited exposure to these groups.
Results displayed that infants did not show a recognition for other-race faces in the URM and White face conditions. Contrary to our hypothesis, participants did not show a novelty preference for White faces and instead presented a preference for own-race faces. This demonstrated the ORE as the infants displayed weaker recognition of White race faces.
This study is the first to explore the ORE in underrepresented racial minority infants and is critical for understanding its development, with implications for mitigating long-term social biases.
Environmental exposure to other races influences the development and strength of the ORE. Infants from underrepresented racial minority groups, who are more likely to have diverse exposure to faces of multiple racial groups, may not develop a perceptual bias for own-race face
ADDRESSING GENDER DISPROPORTIONALITY WITHIN MICHIGAN SPECIAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS
Disproportionate representation in special education is defined as when members of a social group (race, ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status, etc.) have a higher likelihood of meeting eligibility criteria to receive special education services through an Individualized Education Program (IEP). While special education disproportionality ratios for race and ethnicity are monitored through annual data reporting in accordance with federal and state policies, gender disproportionality ratios are not currently required to be monitored. According to Michigan annual data reporting, 34.96% of students receiving special education services are female, whereas male students make up 65.04% of the special education population (MI School Data, 2024). This project aims to examine the gender disproportionality ratio in the state of Michigan’s publicly funded special education programs, and develop guidance to support educators when considering how the complex environmental and cultural factors can impact educational decision making

The United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois has the Third largest jurisdiction in the country and one of the most robust and consequential caseloads. I had the opportunity to intern and experience this court\u27s inner workings this fall, contributing to several different departments and acquainting myself with both the glamourous and high-profile work of the court as well as the mundane administrative tasks that make it possible for the court to function
TLA+ for All: Model Checking in a Python Notebook
TLA+ is widely recognized for its effectiveness in specifying and verifying concurrent and distributed systems. However, for educators and practitioners, barriers to adoption include installation complexity and tooling setup. In the proposed presentation, we demonstrate a lightweight, easily shareable, and fully reproducible approach to running TLA+ in a Python notebook hosted on Google Colab without requiring new tools or custom Jupyter kernel development. By creating an environment where users can experiment with TLA+ models instantly, we lower these barriers and demonstrate the suitability for education and outreach
Implications of Neural Compression to Scientific Images
While neural compression has the potential to revolutionize image compression, recent studies have emphasized its ability to introduce subtle artifacts that could alter the image content. Concerned about the impact of such modifications on scientific images, this work explores the potential effects of neural compression on these images, focusing on two critical aspects: semantic understanding and forensic integrity. We use scientific image datasets to assess the performance of neural compression techniques on Visual Question Answering (VQA) and copy-move forgery detection tasks. Our findings indicate that the subtle changes introduced by neural ] compression do not significantly degrade the performance of state-of-the-art solutions. In the experiments, neurally compressed images sufficiently preserved the original semantics and forensic traces. Moreover, compared to lossy techniques, e.g., JPEG compression, at similar bit-per-pixel (bpp) rates, neural compression demonstrates a superior ability to preserve both semantic content and forensic traces, even at high compression levels. Our results suggest that neural compression may provide a viable alternative to lossy compression for scientific images
Encrypted Network Traffic Analysis: To Website Fingerprinting and Beyond
Maintaining ones privacy online is often thought of as using strong passwords and using encrypted network communications. However, website fingerprinting has in the past been proven to expose even highly encrypted, salted, and padded communications. Using just packet size, direction, and a known IP address an adversary can observe and accurately predict websites a user visits online. In this paper we go beyond just website fingerprinting and show an adversary is able to identify specific articles a user visits, specific Google searches they conduct, and specific actions they take in Virtual Reality. We analyzed network traffic by developing a set of features that yields better performance than previous work, and predicted user behavior using a RandomForest classifier. Ultimately we show that it is possible for an adversary to predict user’s online activity for various applications
