Towards an urban mereology: A generic framework for urban part-whole relationships

    No full text
Part-whole relationships pervade urban morphology and the design disciplines, as they are manifest in both analyses of existing form and as ‘building blocks’ for creating future urban form. Yet these part–whole relations are often left implicit, or else if explicit, they may be inconsistent or not necessarily compatible with each other. Different traditions have grown up for both urban morphology and urban design. This paper sets out to scrutinise the nature of part-whole relations across different urban cases and contexts, to create a generic framework for application to urban morphology and urban design. After an introduction and discussion of the topic of mereology – the study of part-whole and part-part relations – the paper develops a generic framework for mereological relations suitable for application to the urban domain, illustrated with examples. Conclusions are drawn on the prospect for an urban mereology that would support both urban morphology and urban design

Re-imagining Crowsnest Pass: Findings ways of redeveloping/reskilling a coal mining community

    No full text
While world leaders gathered in Glasgow to decide strategies to face climate change at the 2021 COP26 conference, small communities around the world, dependent on current energy practices, struggle to come to terms and adapt to the phaseout of traditional energy sources. The Municipality of Crowsnest Pass in the Canadian Rockies is a coal mining community needing to reimagine its future to redevelop and reskill a dwindling economy. Through a community-based participatory research collaboration between citizens and students, using mixed methods of spatial analysis and morphology, public participatory processes and experiential learning, a series of redevelopment and reskilling strategies were drafted. Through a comprehensive analytical approach to find future potential, many opportunities arose, building confidence in existing assets and generating new ideas for change. Design ideas were drafted based on a rich cultural and natural landscape. Different scenarios and strategies for investment and redevelopment could drive fundraising efforts at the local, provincial and federal levels. Those ideas were very well received by the community. Students and community members became a great partnership: respectful, enthusiastic and empathetic. While implementation will be difficult, the redevelopment strategies and the processes itself presents a renewed impetus for change with an optimistic view for the future for Crowsnest Pass

The role of the open public spaces during the pandemic: A case study of ‘Parque Ibirapuera’

    Get PDF
2022 was the third consecutive year for which the COVID-19 pandemic lasted. Social distancing, the main strategy adopted to prevent the virus spread, has intensified a behaviour change, while people started to do their activities digitally, the act of physically being present in a given place or situation grows in importance. Walking on the streets, meeting people in parks, and seeing and being seen by others, have become essential for maintaining civic behaviour, mental health, and interpersonal's tightening relationships. Understanding how these changes affect cities in their future transformations is crucial. Attempting to explore this domain in-depth, this paper uses a case study about ‘Parque Ibirapuera’ – the most visited park in Latin America, located in São Paulo (Brazil), to explore changes in its visitors' behaviours. Photos, croquis, and news articles regarding the site before and during the COVID-19 pandemic were used for comparative purposes in this analysis. A bibliographical revision of documents surrounding ‘Parque Ibirapuera’s’ context and purpose for the city around it was made in this research to achieve the best possible comprehension of the park's specifications, but also to highlight its importance in São Paulo. This paper was able to understand the public's space role during the pandemic in Brazilian reality, using Ibirapuera Park as an example

Grounded HyperSymbolic Representations Learned through Gradient-Based Optimization

    No full text
Hyperdimensional computing is a novel paradigm, capable of processing complex data structures with simple operations. Its main limitations lie in the conversion of real world data onto hyperdimensional space, which due to lack of a universal translation scheme, oftentimes requires application-specific methods. This work presents a novel method for unsupervised hyperdimensional conversion of arbitrary image data. Additionally, this method is augmented by the ability of creating HyperSymbols, or class prototypes, provided that such class labels are available. The proposed method achieves promising performance on MNIST dataset, both in translating individual samples as well as producing HyperSymbols for downstream classification task

Spatial analysis and protection of traditional villages based on spatial syntax: A case study of Linlue Village of the Dong ethnic group in Sanjiang, Guangxi

    No full text
After a long period of accumulation of agricultural society, traditional villages have bred unique material space and cultural connotations. As a typical representative of traditional villages, Dong villages have unique geographical location and rich material and cultural characteristics, and their spatial protection and cultural inheritance have far-reaching significance and value. Affected by the current urbanization construction, traditional villages have suffered different degrees of destruction. As a representation of the social culture of the village, the protection of the material space greatly affects the development and inheritance of the village. In this paper, spatial syntax is used to quantitatively analyse the spatial morphology of Linlue Village from the aspects of village integration, connection value, control value, and comprehensibility, and summarize the characteristics of its spatial form and the internal spatial characteristics of village buildings. It is concluded that its spatial development lacks planning and capital intervention is excessive and it is necessary to balance the contradiction between social development and physical space through systematic planning from space to management. Through the analysis of the village space, the article provides a reasonable spatial optimization plan in order to better protect the material space of the village and better inherit the traditional culture

From Iconographies to Morphologies. An Overview on European and Chinese Urban Forms through 10 Images

    No full text
A recurring misunderstanding pushes Western architects to transfer the images, the uses and the symbols of European cities’ spaces to projects located into the Chinese cities, that in reality show different and specific images, uses and symbols in their own urban spaces: the idea of the Western square as a place of individual interplay, able to create the ‘society’, cannot work in the same way in China, where the role of the street as the place of the family life and the urban community’s awareness cannot find a correspondent in Europe. The ‘Transitional Morphologies’ Joint Research Unit (at Southeast University and Politecnico di Torino from 2018) operates on the formal analysis of the dynamics in urban form between Asia and Europe in order to improve the design practice through new technical and conceptual tools and often adopting comparative methods. The aim of the paper is to describe the methodology, the contents and the outcomes of a comparative research activity developed by the Author within the context of the Joint Research Unit in the last seven years (2015–2021) in Nanjing, at SEU School of Architecture

A Convolutional and Recurrent Neural Network-based Approach for Speech Emotion Recognition

    No full text
Speech emotion recognition (SER) is a crucial aspect of humancomputer interaction. In this article, we propose a deep learning approach, using CNN and RNN architectures, for SER using both convolutional and recurrent neural networks. We evaluated the approach on four audio datasets, including CREMA-D, RAVDESS, TESS, and EMOVO. Our experiments tested various feature sets and extraction settings to determine optimal features for SER. Our results demonstrate that the proposed approach achieves high accuracy rates and outperforms state-of-the-art algorithms

The Functional Transformation on Urban Railway Heritage: A Case Study of Pukow Railway Station

    No full text
As a representative of the urban modernization, railways have a great influence on the geographic and social space of cities. However, in the current urban renewal, especially after the socio-economic transformation of the 1990s, some historical railway stations and auxiliary facilities (such as squares, living areas, factories, etc.) have lost their initial function and become a unique railway heritage in the city. This paper takes Pukow Railway Station-the end station of the Tientsin-Pukow Railway as an example and analyses the functional changes in the past century. From the perspective of function, this paper compares the physical urban morphology, architectural changes, population settlement data, and urban context of the station and the nearby area over the past 90 years. The function of Pukow Railway Station and the people living nearby are no longer related to railway transportation, and gradually transformed into commerce and general city residents. This area has become into a cultural and commercial district. After losing its transportation function, the urban railway heritage needs to be infused with new uses in conjunction with spontaneous changes. While retaining historical and social values, appropriate functional changes are the way to combine with other urban spaces and become a new urban attraction
