Internet Services for Exploring Social Science Resources
Internet has wrought dramatic changes in the generation, communication and dissemination of social science information. Internet is also a self-publishing media and not a library of evaluated publications. Hence everything must be analyzed for its appropriateness for use.
Increasing use of the Internet for communication and phenomenal increase of Internet resources stimulates different types of services. These services differ in potentialities to meet users needs in communicating, accessing, and disseminating data, information and other resources including computer files. Addresses of selective sites provide glimpses of current Indian activities in social sciences on the Internet.The ‘Internet’ is a communication channel consists of large number of interconnected computers. Each computer with individual IP addresses can exchange digitized information with any or all connected computer. Advantages of the Internet are its speed, timeliness, and ability to communicate instantaneously and availability of free information and freeware/shareware. It reduces barriers to publishing, facilitates quick revision of documents, and makes information easily available universally. “Moving wall” principle affects long-term availability of resources. Increasing use of the Internet for communication and phenomenal increase of Internet resources stimulate different types of services like E-mail, Mailing Lists, Usenet, WWW, Telnet and FTP. Examines potentialities of these services to meet users needs in accessing, communicating and disseminating data, information and other resources including computer files. Web-based company directories: A case study with IT industry
The World Wide Web (WWW) is a popular platform for delivering
digitized information. All types of information sources are
available on WWW such as primary sources (e-journals),
secondary sources (bibliographic databases) and tertiary sources
(directories). Web-based information sources have some specific
features compared to other forms (print, CD-ROM). In this paper
we have discussed the steps involved in setting up a web-based
company directory of Information Technology (IT) industry.
As the first step, a few important web-based company directory
services are analyzed. Based on the analysis, meta tags, indexing
and search features required for effective web-based company
directory service are defined. About 50 company web pages related
to IT industries are retrieved by surfing the Net. The collected
information is compiled and mounted as a MYSQL database.
PERL is used to access the database. The sample directory has
features such as hierarchical browsing, and field based searching
Metadata Architecture for Digital Libraries: Conceptual framework for Indian Digital Libraries
This paper describes approach of development of Metadata solution for digital library
architecture for resource description and retrieval. This deals with the concept of
Metadata [2], the different Metadata standards (Dublin core in particular [5]),
Digital library environment, computer network capabilities etc. This paper also
discusses two of the Digital Library architecture protocols, for resource description
and retrieval. They are STARTS (Stanford Protocol Proposal for Internet Retrieval
and Search) [8] and SODA (Smart Objects and Dump Archives)[13] architecture to
arrive at a possible protocol that would help to build Indian Digital Libraries [5].
While proposing the new architecture the existing Indian environment with respect to
information sources and user's query of the information sources [5.1], which are
feasible for launch of this protocol for information processing and retrieval has been
dealt with. This is a pilot study which the author has done while doing his Fulbright
fellowship in the College of Library Information Studies, University of Maryland,
College Park, MD during 1999-2000
Evaluating digital geographical information resources: the multimedia advantage
This paper evaluates web-based and CD-ROM-based digital
information sources in the subject areas of geography and
earth studies. The object of this evaluation is to infer that
contrary to prior notions that multimedia is a cosmetic
approach to digital information presentation, it actually
becomes a necessity for digital documentation in certain
subjects
Hierarchical Browsing Interface: A Case Study with India Business Insight Database (IBID)
Hierarchical browsing provides a browsable summary of
information to the users. This summary is the categorization of
information, which enables the users to find relevant
information. Popular bibliographic information retrieval
software like SPIRS (Silver Platter Information Retrieval
System), Dialog OnDisc, Proquest etc. do not support
hierarchical browsing of database content. The work provided
in this paper is an attempt has been made to provide a
hierarchical browsing interface to some sample records (about
5000) extracted from the India Business Insight Database
(IBID). The records in the IBID have been categorized based
on the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) scheme,
developed by USA government statistical agencies as a means
to group company and industry data
Web databases: A better Solution for Organising the Internet Resources
The web databases have become very popular in the Internet
world for organizing the Information resources. Library and
Information centers can effectively utilize this web technology
for improving as well as delivering new services. This paper
discusses the tools and the techniques of the 'Database - Web'
connectivity in brief and also provides the examples of Perl -
MySql and ASP - MS-Access connectivity
Library Digital Resources: Relational Databases or Catalogues? (A Short Tutorial)
With the rush to deploy Information Technology in all service areas, there is
tremendous pressure on small and medium size (around 1 lakh holdings) libraries in
India to digitize their records. In doing so, Librarians wishing to go digital face the
risk of opting for platforms and back-ends not truly designed for managing library
records. The fact that designers of almost all Library Management Systems currently
popular, have opted for the Relational Database model in structuring library data,
further confounds the Librarian's choice and almost always leads to the deployment of
inappropriate tools. This article (tutorial) argues that Library records cannot be
conveniently cast in the conventional RDBMS framework without significant
modifications to the structures of Library data as librarians have conventionally
structured it, as well as key concepts in conventional RDBMS. It is the premise of this
article that these modifications can be made only at the risk of seriously detracting
from the effectiveness of the tools as well as the quality of the data. The premise here
is that Library data are not relational databases but catalogs in the sense that they
cannot be normalized to fit the canonical normal forms. An alternative framework of
tools (WWWISIS back-end from the ISIS family) and structured data (ISO 8059) is
suggested and explained
A Proposal for Action Plan for Digitization of University Libraries
Electronic publishing and information accessing have become easy and convenient
mainly because of Internet and the World Wide Web technologies. Most digital libraries
were developed in the past by taking up projects based on specific disciplines and then
developed into full-fledged digital libraries. The inter-networking communication links,
low cost storage solutions, powerful desktops, workstations, servers and multimedia
hardware and software technologies are now available for initiating the Digital Library

Bibliographic Data Elements for Internet Resources using XML: A Proposal
The paper focuses on the possibilities of better organization
and retrieval of Internet resources with the advent of
eXtensible Markup Language (XML). The paper advocates the
need of identifying necessary and sufficient bibliographic data
fields for Internet resources, and generating numerical XML
elements for the data fields using a standard syntax which
brings together existing tag codes. The paper also brings into
the issue of standard out put of search results
