Web Page Designing for Academic Libraries in Cyber Age
Get PDFWith the explosive growth of web today, libraries in their old
concepts are no more in existence. A good and well designed
and developed library web page is not only excellent media for
publicizing the libra ry functions, activities, programs,
resources and services but also helps to bring to the notice of
users all significant information which they must know in
developing and using their library in the process of time. In
this respect, considerable thought should go to determining
the kind of information and its presentation on the web.
In view of above concepts an attempt is made in this paper to
develop a model of web page designing for academic libraries
basing on the existing available web pages

Information centers, it has become imperative to gather various
opinions and cost effectiveness of the electronic-journals (e-
Journals) in the libraries. The e-journals have opened up many
service opportunities for academic libraries. Indian Institute of
Astrophysics library is no exception in facing this transition.
The Institute has been accessing the electronic versions for the
last couple of years for some of the journals, which were
acquired in print format for many years. This paper briefly
describes the introduction of electronic journals in the Indian
Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) library, the cost factors and their
usage by the scientists. It also discusses the problems faced by
the libraries in handling electronic journals
Indian Journal of Medical Research – an analysis of citation pattern
Get PDFILA Bulletin 2001, 37(1), 9-12The study is based on 781 citations appended to 43 research articles pertaining to January to June 2000 issues of volume 109 of Indian Journal of Medical Research. The authorship pattern of the citations shows that more than 15 per cent contributions are single-authored and about 85 per cent are the result of teamwork. The team size of this field is bigger than those in the fields of chemistry and physics. Single-authored articles amount to 15.52 per cent of the total citations and about 28 per cent resulted through the collaboration of five or more authors. Of the citations 88.73 per cent pertain to journal articles. Of the citing articles 38 contributed by Indian authors, 3 by foreign authors and 2 jointly by Indian and foreign authors. Of the total citations 9.48 per cent are author self-citations and 7.3 per cent are journal self-citations

The possible uses of the Web seem endless, but the great lacuna of Internet is the lack of labeling, cataloging and descriptive information structured in such a way that allows Web pages to be properly searched and processed in particular by computer. In other words, what is now very much needed on the Web is metadata. Most of the common metadata describes the intellectual content of resources, and this is well exploited for cataloging and resource discovery purposes. Metadata can also assist in management of large repositories of resources. This paper is an effort to show how metadata can help to organize the content so that user can retrieve the exact piece of information from the ocean of electronic resources
