Harvest: An Integrated Set of Tools for a Digital Library

    Get PDF
This paper discusses the problems in organization and retrieval due proliferation resources in digital format over the web. It presents the harvest systems which tackles the problems through a set of customizable tools for gathering information from diverse repositories, building topic specific content indexes, flexibly searching indexes, widely replicating them, and caching objects as they are retrieved across the Internet. Harvest permits flexible construction of information services that use both the network and information servers efficiently. It is easily configurable system and can be deployed to automatically collect and summarize related objects from around the Internet into digital library collections

Greenstone Digital Library Software (GSDL): A Tutorial

    Get PDF
This tutorial describes how to build your own digital library using the Greenstone Digital Library (GSDL) Software -- a comprehensive, open-source system for constructing, presenting, and maintaining digital collections. Collections can be built and rebuilt automatically in GSDL. The collections are easily maintainable and include effective full-text searching and metadata-based browsing facilities that are attractive and easy to use. Browsing utilizes hierarchical structures that are created automatically from metadata associated with the source documents. Collections can include text, pictures, audio, and video, using an easy to use tool called the Collector. Documents in the collection can be in any language. Even the GSDL interface is available in many languages including Chinese and Arabic. The system is extensible and customizable i.e. software "plugins" can accommodate different documents and metadata types according to user requirement

Institutional distribution in computer science research in India: a study

    Get PDF
The study is based on 1408 research papers published in the international journals on computer sciences contributed by the Indian scientists from 1991 to 2000. The institutional distribution of research has been studied. The scatter of literature is a two-way process controlled by number of institutions contributing literature and the number of journals publishing these contributions. However, major portion of these contributions, as per the analysis, comes from a few institutions, like IITs (located at Kharagpur, Kanpur, Delhi, Chennai and Mumbai), Indian Statistical Institute at Kolkata and Indian Institute of Science (IISc) at Bangalore. The study shows that India has potential of carrying out computer science research of international standard

    Librarians as Knowledge Mangers

    Get PDF
An overall view of knowledge management, and the role of librarians in its implementation are being discussed. The shift from traditional work culture to a learning organization cannot be accomplished quickly. It requires high-level commitment to change, a rewards system that encourages teamwork, and the sharing of best practices. The main idea of knowledge management is establishing an environment where information is shared and openly accepted. To built an effective knowledge management system, the knowledge system needs to work according to the work flow of the respective organization, and should be able to produce the relevant information to the ongoing projects in the organization. At the completion of the project, the system is able to produce key documentation, lessons learned and other useful information to be stored and disseminated for future use. Corporations want knowledge management because they realize it has the potential to help them use what they already know, and what they don’t know, to work smarter and quicker and to make more money. Librarians have significant advantages as knowledge management players and they are both effective and customer oriented, secondly, they understand the ways in which people communicate information needs. Thus, librarians as knowledge managers can provide value-added information to their user community by using knowledge management tools in their system

The paper suggests that the introductory part of any article gives an idea about the thought content of the article; the section headings and sub-headings among themselves may shed light on the content; the references as end-notes or footnotes should also indicate much about the topic; the legends of illustrations e.g., graphs, charts, tables etc. may be used to understand the core contents; acknowledgements and some other peripheral parts may also help. These are considered as contexts. Utilizing the contexts only informative or indicative summaries of the text would be constructed
