The impact of continuing education programmes on library and information science professionals
Changes in libraries and the expectations of their clientele are related aspects of LIS training. Those changes, like the use of IT, computers, communications, Internet and multimedia, increase expectations of users about the quality of the library services. This article describes the
need and impact of continuing education programmes (CEP) for library and information science (LIS) professionals in India, particularly for college librarians. For this, a survey was conducted to access the impact of CEP courses organised by different agencies in the field of LIS. The results of the survey are presented in this pape
Customizing Web Search with ht://Dig
Searching the web through regular search engine has become a difficult task. With ht://Dig one can search his/her favorite sites. It can also be used as search engine on a hosted website.
ht://Dig generates a search index if one identifies the websites which are needed to be searched and keeps index in a database. One can time to time update the index. The paper
demonstrates how to configure ht://Dig for multiple websites searching
Types of Resources Emerging Trends
The Paper examines in brief the various resources being used
from ancient to the Modern age, where information technology
is influencing our every days life. An attempt has been made to
compare the conventional book with that of e-book which is of
recent origin
Need For A National Resource Sharing Network in India: Proposed Model
The paper deals with the need of Resource Sharing Network in
India. The objective of this network is to develop resource
sharing strategy for India and make cooperation among
different types of LIC networks which include National Library
of India. Internet technologies have brought a drastic change
in this regard, specially Z39.50 protocol has provided a
common platform which help to develop a Union catalogue.
This protocol has made resource sharing as a reality. This
paper also shows the comparison between different LIS
networks and provides an economical model for developing the
National Resource Sharing Network in India
E- Learning Trends of CMS and The Role of Digital Libraries
Internet and a broad spectrum of web based applications have
added a new dimension to the technologies and techniques
employed for Content Management System (CMS) in elearning.
E-learning refers to the creation, delivery, and
management of training in electronic environment. The
convergence of e-learning and digital libraries creates
challenge to be solved not only at technical level but also at the
institutional level. The handling of e-Learning systems in
conjunction with other prominent web applications and the
perfectly smooth integration of content creation, search,
access, updating etc., in terms of the different technologies is
still inconclusive and remains as a open ended issue. This
paper will try to discuss about the trends of CMS and evolution
(a tool based database oriented approach) of such a unified
CMS for e-learning in the context of digital libraries
Organizing the Web: A Faceted Approach
Today, the Internet is a popular media for information
communication. Like a library it is a storehouse of information
albeit in electronic format. But the amount of information
available on the Internet is vast and unlike the library, the
information is disorganized, chaotic and without systematic and
semantic structure whatsoever. Due to which the users often end
up with irrelevant results for their queries. Classifying and
cataloguing the Internet would be a step forward in organizing
it. This paper examines the need for classifying the Web
resources; looks at the pros and cons of using library
classification, as an organizational tool for Web resources; and
the current usage of library classification schemes to organize
the Internet (eg. BUBL Link). It further investigates the
suitability of freely faceted classification scheme like Colon
Classification to the ‘dynamic’ nature of the Internet compared
to widely used enumerative schemes like DDC or LCC
Content Creation, Organization and Management:Transition Time for Informational Professionals
In a digital era, one can see both positive development and the
challenge that lies ahead for professionals in the area related
to information management, especially those who are related
to the mass media, library and education. The Information,
Communication and Technology (ICT) have necessitated the
professionals to keep themselves abreast of the changing times.
With lots of information available on the internet, the scope of
librarians, content developers or web writers has also changed
drastically as they have to play the varying role – that of project managers, coordinators so as to manage their
resources resolutely. From acquisition of books to choosing
their media for storage, the role has changed completely for
librarians while the content developers/ web writers have
become an integral part of an organization as they are looked
upon as someone who provides the link between the
organization and its publics. With support from graphic
designers, programmers and systems administrators, they are
the ones expected to understand the need of the end-users and
present the content accordingly for easy access. Therefore, at
the time of information explosion, the need of the hour is
tapping the potential of an individual and identifying their
needs and training them accordingly. The other factor is
allocation of funds for libraries to stand up to the challenges
that lie ahead so as to move to the digital era. Especially in the
business of e-publishing the need of the hour is to build a
bridge between the content creator and the library
Effective Web Content Management: Empowering the Business User
Managing a Web site in the companies, with today’s increased
content demand, is challenging. Due to the high visibility of
Web sites, a lot of information is being published on the web.
With this ever-expanding horizon of the web, the increasing
numbers of Web authors, the growing number of visitors, and
the growing complexity of the technologies used, content
management has become a prime concern. Another factor is
the growing need to update the content of the site to keep
people interested in coming back.
Content management (CM) solutions can help companies
increase the number of repeat visitors and ultimately increase
revenues, by offering timelier and more valuable content.
Content Management solutions offer Web authoring, editing,
and publishing capabilities. These CM solutions are designed
to help Web creation and to assist with planning, coordinating,
and tracking site changes
Terminology in Building Subject Gateway
With large amounts of information available on the Internet,
users are finding it more and more difficult to access that
information. Several tools are being designed to help users
overcome the problem of ‘finding a needle in a haystack’.
Subject gateways are one such tool designed for a specific user
group with interests in a specific subject area. Subject
gateways are gaining popularity, as their design arises from
the combined effort a subject specialist who gives his expert
advice on subject details and an Information specialist who is
best equipped with the knowledge of organizing of information
for convenient retrieval. This paper attempts at describing the
methodology used during initial stages of building a subject
gateway – determining the scope of the subject at hand by
identifying terms to be included and analyzing these terms. The various possible methods of organizing the terms to
represent the entire subject as a cognitive map are also
discussed. The paper describes the various possibilities of
applying the traditional techniques to the Web environment
Progress of Library Management Softwares: an Indian Scenario
This paper discusses the development of library management
softwares over the past decades, traces out the characteristics and trends
of softwares with special reference to packages available in Indian
environment and compares services and facilities incorporated in library
automation packages available in India against various checklists and with
the help of tables and appendices
