Digital information services: a boon for the present and future generations
Any document that is not collected and preserved is likely to
be lost, unavailable both now and future. Digitization is a viable solution
to make it eternal; to maintain the digital collections and provide access
digital libraries became essential in the contemporary information
society. In a digital environment university libraries have a new role to
fill. To fulfill the mission of the library it has to provide the traditional
reference services, retrieval and dissemination of information and at the
same time it has to stretch its services to information search services, to
organize the information resources for easy access, to filter qualitative
information from the vast ocean of World Wide Web, to facilitate
translation services to resolve both linguistic and format incompatibilities
and also to take up publishing service in which libraries also aggregate
information, add value to information products, and create new
information. Another traditional library activity that will surely expand in
University Digital Libraries is the collection and creation of reviews or
annotations for information resources
An OAI-based approach to build and maintain union catalogue of OPACs
Libraries world-over are facing an economic crisis due to the
imbalance in skyrocketing of subscription prices and shrinking or at
best stable library budgets. Librarians have long ago realized the fact
that however rich their collections are, they will not be able to meet the
ever growing demands of their clientele. And, for this very reason, the
inter library loan (ILL) service was started by the librarians so that it
could, to some extent, supplement their collections. However, for the
ILL service to be effective, the participating libraries in the ILL service
should have their online public access catalogues (OPACs) in place.
Also, having a union catalogue (a centralized database) of the
participating libraries will make the service more efficient. Past
experiences in creating and maintaining union catalogues clearly reveal
that maintaining the currency of the union catalogues is not an easy
task, especially, if the processes of obtaining the updates of the OPACs
from the member libraries and updating the union catalogue involve
manual procedures. In this paper, we propose an OAI-based approach to
build and maintain union catalogues. In this approach the individual
OPACs (data providers) expose their metadata for harvesting. The OAIbased
service providers harvest the exposed metadata automatically.
The metadata thus harvested is ingested into a centralized database,
which will serve as an online union catalogue, supporting search,
browse, and other value-added functionalities for the end-users. The
OAI-based approach will eliminate the manual work involved in getting
the OAPC updates and aslo in updating the union catalogues
Reading habits of school going children: some observations.
Published in Library Progress (International), vol.20 (No.2): 2000: p.67-70Through this survey, an attempt has been made to have an access to the liking and unlikeness of the children of age group 5 to 14. In the survey, the authors have interviewed 240 students both boys and girls personally and the help of charging and discharging registers have also been taken
Institutional Repositories: An Essential tool for Information and knowledge Sharing
The Institutional Repositories is a very powerful idea that can serve as an engine of change for any institution. In a digital age everyone wants contents and to be successful information service providers, information center and libraries needs to develop services in such line way so that the end users may manipulate the content in ways as they desired. Therefore, in the present scenario, IR’s are become an indispensable component for information and knowledge sharing in the scholar world. IR provides a method for capturing and maintaining today’s electronic detritus so that tomorrow’s scholars can understand the thinking behind the published record. In the paper author has tried to brief about Repository, Institutional Repository, their Benefits, Essential Elements of IR. Author has also discussed about the software’s that are easily available to create and maintain in institutional repositories ie. Open Source software and Commercial digital repository software. Further, brief about IR and Libraries, Failure of IR also discussed in brief
Digital Libraries in Indian Languages: Some Provocative Thoughts
India is a nation of many languages and scripts. The technological advancements have encouraged Indian community to make there classical scripture more visible to the world. But there are many inherent problems appear at the time of mechanical text processing and representation of Indic scripts. The paper provides an overview of current status of development of digital libraries in India. An investigative account of difficulties has been presented towards creating digital libraries in Indian languages. Emphasis is given on a creating a nationwide movement for digital library in India
Development of classical Tamil digital library : CILL experience
The present study describes the establishment and develops a digital
library in Classical Tamil. An overview of the concept “Classical
Tamil” is explained. The need for developing classification schedule
in Classical Tamil was much felt and a module is presented. The
study also proposes the creation of bilingual metadata with sufficient
search facility in the original language using MARC format and
Unicode. It will also discuss the digitising process, storage, retrieval,
dissemination, preservation, etc in original languag
Digital library: process, services, challenges and opportunities
If technology push, crashing costs, and global
connectivity are the signposts for the coming decade,
digital libraries are the next step in the convergence
revolution. Digital libraries are innovations, the
implementation of which is nascent in the developing
countries. However, they hold the promise of becoming
key technologies for knowledge creation and
management in the future. The purpose of this article is
to describe basic concepts, processes and services of
digital libraries, discuss challenges and opportunities
offered/faced by digital libraries
Changing role of library professionals in the digital environment
The information environment is greatly
changing throughout the world. Present rapid development
in communication system and recent innovation in
technology witnessed as changing emphasis in the role of
information and its management. The new technologies
have facilited the transformation of data into digital format.
This paper defines the digital library, and analyses the
changing role of the library professionals in digital
environment and need of new skills for library
professionals
User centric web search using ontology
Semantic information retrieval systems query the World
Wide Web based on context information, and are intended to provide
more pertinent search results. However, most of the existing systems
overlook one important aspect ‘the user’. They are more focused on
eliminating the obscure results that a conventional or non-semantic
search engine would throw up and hence, they are pretty much static.
On the other hand, our effort would channel its focus more towards
providing a more user-centric service using ontology and involving
learning and prediction. By studying the usage statistics of the user,
context information can be built and used effectively to produce better
search results. Such an approach also entails that the knowledge that is
accrued, be organized such that the relationships between the data
elements can be elicited easily and unambiguously. The ontology would
be described using OWL. Latent semantic indexing algorithm is used
for context analysis and retrieva
Digital repositories: concepts and issues
Digital repositories have become an increasingly recognized means of
digitally archiving and enabling access to digital information. The long-term survival,
value and usability of the information stored within digital repositories depends on
numerous criteria such as the formats selected for storage, the capture of associated
metadata, proactive preservation measures, and the perceived trust in the repository
itself. Repositories are important for universities and colleges in helping to manage
and capture intellectual assets as a part of their information strategy. A digital
repository can hold a wide range of materials for a variety of purposes and users. It
can support research, learning, and administrative processes. However, repository
solutions are most viable and sustainable when they are built on open standards
