Semantic Web Domain Knowledge Representation Using Software Engineering Modeling Technique
ICSD2007, BangaloreThe semantic web offers a great deal of deviation from the way in which the current search engines which are based on the traditional information search theory work. Semantic search is carried out by ontology based intelligent information retrieval. So a good semantic search needs a good ontology. The ontology developers need more familiar notations and tools for a uniform representation of ontologies. UML being a standard modeling language in software engineering, it is better supported in terms of expertise and the tools as compared to the upcoming semantic web languages. This work proposes a representation technique which is based on software engineering standards namely UML for modeling domain knowledge of the Semantic Web. The ontology for Company Domain has been presented using this software engineering modeling technique. The UML tool like Rational Rose tool can be used to provide support for modeling complex ontologies of the given domain.DRTC,ISI,Bangalore,INDI
Development of ETD Repository at IITK Library using DSpace
Establishing an ETD repository at any organization having
large volume of these is really a challenging task. As the Indian
Institute of Technology Kanpur had started its research programs from
1963 onwards, we have over 9000 of M.Tech and Ph. D theses in
different areas of Science, Engineering, and Humanities & Social
Sciences. We have completed the digitization of all submitted theses.
Our ETD powered by DSpace with more advanced features like crosscollection
search, linking to referred IITK theses, user friendly design
and customized work flow for different modes of submission of theses
to ETD etc.. In this paper, we clearly explain and share the experiences
we have gained from the digitization to accessing ETD, and the
challenges we faced, enhancements we incorporated with special
emphasis on technical developments, and the lessons we have learnt
during the various stages of development of our project for ETD
Digital world – obstructions and solutions
The world at present is hovering around digitization. The word
digitization stands at the upper edge. To ignore it, means to deprive one
of the expanding world of opportunities. In contrast to it one still finds
oneself amidst lot of obstructions - obstructions that sometimes erupt in
the form of financial crunch, sometimes in the sluggish attitude of the
staff, sometimes in unwillingness on the part of worker, sometimes in
traditional attitude of the seniors, sometimes in impediments from
government and sometimes in the technology itself. Whatever be the
problems one cannot avoid this most essential aspect of life. Rather one
shall have to find the solutions, which too are not difficult to find. One
should resolve to adopt the concept and only then they will find that
nothing is impossible to usher in the new era of immense potentials
The Future of Libraries in the Work of S.R.
this paper discuss the Ranganathan's importance in todays digital library world. how his Five laws plays the role in today's environment. And this paper also examines importans of Ranganathan's Colon classification
Institutional Repository at National Aerospace Laboratories
The Information Centre of NAL with its state-of-the-art
expertise, infrastructure and services initiated setting up of its own
repository during 2003 using, the then most popular open source
software Greenstone Digital Library (GSDL). The work progressed
rapidly with the adoption of the open source software GNU EPrints for
archiving and managing the digital collections. This paper in detail
explains the working model of NAL’s Institutional Repository. It
discusses the technology employed and methodology adopted in
building the same. The collection process of different data types,
processing and depositing the same to IR is discussed in detail. It is
summarized by providing the current status and the statistics on number
of hits receive
A practical approach to library automation.
Published in Library Progress (International), vol.20 (No.1): 2000: p.1-9.Describes the explosion of information and shortage of space, growth of clientele, enhancement of library funds, cost hike of printed as well as electronic materials and benefits of resources sharing. Discusses the aims, objectives and need for the change of library tools and technique under the changing environment. Mentions the concepts of automation of library activities, areas and services such as acquisition, database management, classification and cataloguing" circulation, serial control, information retrieval, communication networks, .and documentation services etc. Simplify the steps of software selection with the comparison in between some leading software's. Helps in training and assistance for library professional. Provides the options for choosing the configuration of computer hardware based on the size of the library
The core concept of metadata for digital information resources with special reference to Dublin Core
This articles deals with the general concept of Metadata, some
definitions, types, creation methods and tools for Metadata. Enumerates
some of the important functions like Resource discovery, Organizing
digital resources, Interoperability, Archiving and preservation.
Discusses ultimate goals of different types of metadata. It also
elaborates some standards regarding metadata. Encompasses role of
metadata in the life cycle of information objects in the digital
information system. It enumerates an overview outlining the basic
elements of Dublin Core Metadata standard. Besides Dublin Core, other
metadata standards are just mentioned to well acquainted by name
Role of semantics ontologies on modern educational systems
The author describes his experience with students interacting with
some websites he made for didactics and how this led him to an appreciation
for the need for better searching tools and strategies for education. The
students’ difficulties emerging from the above observations were a special
case of the more general problem evidenced from people while searching
information on the web. Semantic web is then discussed as a way to help
people overcome their difficulties in using the web to gain knowledge.
The paper describes some models for knowledge construction and analyzes
them in terms of their suitability as instruments for the introduction of
semantics on the web. The paper then provides evidence regarding some
limits for the systematic use of semantic search engine and ontology domain
systems in everyday teaching and knowledge construction. Finally, the paper
reports and explains a hypothesis of an information system for building
communities of practice and letting them work on the construction of domain
ontology. The paper concludes that this construct is well adapted to the
model for knowledge construction firstly hypothesized, and can give good
results in teaching-learning planning and carrying out and in helping
scientists and scholars to analyze scientific paradigms and to find new trends

Use of OAI protocol and its impact in digital libraries
The current communication approaches the situation of the
development of repositories that use the Open Archives Initiative (OAI)
protocol for data collection. These type of digital libraries are undergoing
a worldwide boom. This work studies the current state of their
implantation in Spain, Portugal and Latin America. In order to do so, the
existing projects in the official records have been studied using a
methodology beyond the existing records of repositories. It concludes that
the situation in 2006 is fairly encouraging in so far as the number of
projects, but that it is quite deficient as concerns the quantity of data

Data expert system
Expert System has a formal definition of system having
collection of data from the expertise of particular field on specific
topic. This research work is on the expert system of data. Here expert
means a very peculiar system to manipulate & maintain data. We are
well aware of the word DBMS & RDBMS, which stores the data in
two dimensional forms but this expert system works on the collection
of multidimensional data having qualities of data warehousing,
mining in a grid form of allocation. This feature of the system helps
to enhance the relation among data stored in a non continuous (grid)
form. This non continuous allocation reduce the replication of data in
system. Therefore it also works for well utilization of memory. This
system uses 5GL features for data entries and manipulation which
support system by less time consumption in above mentioned
process, in different languages. 5GL features are used to improve
user system utilization by giving the feature of Library and Micro
construction. For this purpose the research work has an idea of
merging 4GL with 5GL.That is this feature of the research work
presents the paper work on the idea of implementing PL/SQL by
5GL. Therefore it will reduce the task of user to learn or permutate
with 4GL in database. This work also has some attention to DL &
DRO to support the objective of system & its functioning
