A Comparative Analysis of the Case for Jewish and African-American Reparations
No full textWhat explains the (mostly) differential treatment given to the Jewish case for reparations compared to the African-American one? I will argue that unequal moral consideration is mostly to blame. In what follows, I\u27ll propose that in order to diagnose the causes of this difference, we should question all cases for reparations equally, which means asking a difficult question: Should Jews have received and continue to receive reparations? I contend that such a question could aid us in fixing this moral divide by forcing members of all groups to (1) either concede to the moral point in favor of universal reparations for all similarly affected groups, thereby eliminating special cases, or (2) dissent from the moral assumption underlying most defenses of reparations and explicitly provide argumentation as to why some cases are more deserving of moral support than others
Who has a Right to Space?: Space Colonization Considering State Rights to Territory
No full textThis talk examines the importance of establishing a doctrine of space colonization by asking the question: What are the rights of states to space colonization? I attempt to outline a preliminary analogy between the human history of colonization and present and future explorations into space. This allows me to propose a doctrine of distributive space justice that takes into consideration the colonization potential of space powers like the United States and Russia, while also considering developing programs in Brazil and even less-developed states. As an example, part of my proposal includes the creation of a United Nations committee which will be charged with allotting equal space so that competing state claims for territory can be adjudicated in a fair and peaceful manner

A Theoretical and Empirical Analysis of the Natural Environment and Suicide
Get PDFThis project seeks to explain suicide rates in the United States at the county level using demographic, economic, and environmental factors. The study explores whether the quality of the natural environment of a county has a statistically significant impact when predicting suicide rates. The findings are consistent with previous research in terms of demographic, economic, and gun law variables. Statistical analysis reveals that the natural environment is a statistically significant predictor of county-wide suicide rates, however further inferences from the model are inconclusive. That is, no inference can be made on whether the quality of the natural environment is enough to dissuade an individual from committing suicide. More sensitive metrics are needed to assess the levels of the quality of the natural environment and reach reliable conclusions
Effects of Prolonged Social Isolation: Sex Differences in Anxiety, Depression, and Sociability Behavior in Male and Female Rats
No full textClinically, prolonged social isolation in adolescence is regarded as a risk factor for the development of anxiety. The purpose of this research project was to determine whether the duration of social isolation, sex of the animal, or the housing condition would affect the development of depressive-like behaviors. Overall, the data from open field, conditioned place preference, appetitive conditioning, and social interaction tests revealed that prolonged social isolation affected the sociability behavior as well as increased the anxiety behavior. Future research will focus on determining possible sex differences in the Basolateral Amygdala using the deltaFosB marker for chronic stress neuronal activation
Causes of Stress and Coping Methods Among College Students
No full textThis research analyzed stress among college students and helped determine common stressors and coping strategies. Surveys regarding stressors and coping methods were distributed to students (N=22). Five follow-up interviews were conducted and participants were asked about coping methods as well as the impact stress had on their health. The most common stressor was coursework load. It was found that most students had severe impact of stress on their health and most students cope by ignoring stressors and by talking through problems with peers. This study addressed the Social Emotional Learning aspect of understanding others’ behavior and maintaining emotional homeostasis as an individual
