    Infanticide in Chicago, 1870-1910

    This project explores findings from a major data collection effort from the records of the Coroner’s Inquest Court of Cook County. The 108 volumes of the Coroner’s Inquests records were reviewed to record, code, and analyze 1,270 infant deaths that were deemed suspicious. The project uses this quantitative foundation to examine the prevalence and nature of infanticide in Chicago from the 1870s to the 1910s, asking why mothers chose to kill or abandon infants. It also uses broader qualitative evidence to examine changes in how doctors, the legal system, and social reformers understood the practice of infanticide

    What to Expect When You\u27re Unsuspecting: A Study of Liminality Through First-Year Students\u27 College Expectations

    The first year of college can be understood as a liminal phase, a period that is “betwixt and between.” This project explores how first-year students’ expectations about college affect their transition into college. Through my research, I discovered a consensus among first-year students about a perfect college student that has aspirational functions. Following Victor Turner, I draw parallels between the perfect college student and the “monstrous” figures included in initiation rituals to emphasize the cultural factors necessary for success. I conclude that the perfect college student acts as a guide that helps first-year students navigate their liminal state

    Why do Attractive Males take More Risks when Searching for Mates? Testing the “Live Fast, Die Young” Hypothesis

    Mating signals are often conspicuous and can be eavesdropped on by predators. Therefore, we expect individuals to attend to predator cues when signaling to mates. Males of the lesser waxmoth sing to attract females, but their song also attracts bat predators. Singing males respond to bat calls by freezing, but this response varies among individuals. Interestingly, attractive males take more risks. We investigate why by testing the hypothesis that attractive males have shorter lifespans. Attractive males should then benefit from taking risks that favor current reproduction versus being cautious to favor future mating opportunities

    Effects of Prolonged Social Isolation: Sex Differences in Anxiety, Depression, and Sociability Behavior in Male and Female Rats

    Clinically, prolonged social isolation in adolescence is regarded as a risk factor for the development of anxiety. The purpose of this research project was to determine whether the duration of social isolation, sex of the animal, or the housing condition would affect the development of depressive-like behaviors. Overall, the data from open field, conditioned place preference, appetitive conditioning, and social-interaction tests revealed that prolonged social isolation affected sociability behavior and increased anxiety behavior. Future research will focus on determining possible sex differences in the basolateral amygdala using the deltaFosB marker for chronic stress neuronal activation

    How Does the Number of Cues Influence Part-Set Cueing for Order Memory?

    In a typical, episodic, part-set cueing experiment, participants are given information to remember (e.g., 30 words) and then, after little or no delay, they are asked to remember that information either in the presence or absence of part-set cues. In free recall, as the number of cues increases, performance on the remaining items decreases (part-set cueing impairment). In contrast to these findings, preliminary results suggest that performance increases as the number of cues increases when tested with a reconstruction of order task (part-set cueing facilitation). Implications will be discussed

    Quantum Advantages Quantum Algorithm for Finding the Minimum

    Theories about quantum computers and how they would work have been around for a few decades. Peter Shor and Lov Grover even came up with algorithms during the 1990s when the idea of building a quantum computer was far-fetched. We are now at a point where our processors are getting faster and smaller, only a few nanometres thick. This obviously has its limits. Big companies like Google, Microsoft, and IBM are at a point where their quantum computers are equivalent to the room sized computers that we see in some old pictures. Here we build up the necessary background required to understand how quantum computers work and what advantages a quantum computer has over a classical computer. We will also be looking at the famous Grover’s quantum search algorithm and will be using the ideas from that to create our own simple algorithm that finds the minimum value from a given set of data

    From Farming to Gaming: How Native Americans Have Been Pushed into Poverty

    This paper examines the long history of marginalization of Native Americans, and argues that this group is the most oppressed people in the U.S. today. Since European colonization, systematic marginalization has pushed Native Americans into the farming/ranching industry with little hope of escape; it was not until the 1980s that the gaming/gambling industry emerged as a new form of commerce for reservations. Despite the new economic opportunity, Native Americans remain in poverty
