    Afghanistan’s Human Security Crisis: Understanding Violence as a Health Epidemic

    After the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, Afghanistan experienced new forms of conflict that the models of state behavior during the Cold War could not entirely explain. The (in)security observed in Afghanistan and other underdeveloped countries inspired scholars to de-militarize security studies and explore different paradigms of security. Human security, unlike national security, conceives violence as a threat to the individual. In public health studies, violence is a disease that behaves like an infectious disease. Freedom of health is essential to human security because the paradigm is centered on protection and empowerment of human beings. In this thesis, I demonstrate how the environment of violence in Afghanistan affects the health of Afghan people and behaves like a disease itself

    Combinatorial Impact of α-Synuclein Post-Translational Modifications in Yeast

    Parkinson’s Disease is a devastating neurodegenerative disorder in which loss of voluntary movement occurs due to accumulation of misfolded α-synuclein in the midbrain. In diseased individuals, α-synuclein is covalently modified by multiple chemical groups. The pathological contributions of some modifications are well-studied (phosphorylation and nitration), but those of more recently identified ones (sumoylation, acetylation, and glycation) remain scant. Furthermore, how these modifications in combination influence α-synuclein’s properties is unknown. We used a budding yeast model of Parkinson’s Disease to investigate the effects of these modifications on α-synuclein’s localization, expression, and toxicity. We found that: 1) SUMOylation and acetylation are protective, while phosphorylation and glycation are detrimental; 2) SUMOylation and phosphorylation, as well as acetylation and glycation, counteract each other; 3) and glycation alters the toxicity of several α-synuclein mutants that cause familial Parkinson’s Disease. This study suggests that post-translational modifications are a viable target for manipulating α-synuclein’s pathological properties

    Motivations for Eating Decisions of College Students

    Students at Lake Forest College do many things per day—eating is one of them. Commonly, food choices are influenced by other people, emotions, and by personal goals. How do students make food choices, and are choices indicative of disordered eating patterns or of healthy relationships with food? The purpose of this study was to understand how college students make decisions about what to eat and what motivates the food choices they make. My work suggests students were generally not influenced by others, emotions can influence food choice, and goals had the biggest influence on the food choices students made

    On May 7, 1999, during NATO\u27s air war against Serbia, a U.S. bomber launched five guided missiles that destroyed a portion of the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, killing three Chinese citizens and wounding 20 others, three seriously. Outraged by the incident, Chinese citizens took to the streets and attacked U.S. diplomatic buildings across China, and the Chinese government suspended cooperative endeavors with the U.S. Two decades later, the bombing\u27s impact on contemporary Sino-American relations is alive and well. This project employs international relations theory to analyze how the bombing has positively and negatively shaped this critical bilateral relationship, focusing on the intensifying strategic rivalry, the prospects for cooperation on a range of international issues of importance to both countries, and China\u27s determination to be treated as America\u27s equal on the world stage

    A Brief Introduction to Display Holography: Curation of the Lake Forest College Holography Gallery

    A hologram is a complex diffraction grating made by recording the interference pattern of two electromagnetic radiation fields on a light-sensitive surface. Holography is the study of this process. While holograms have been used for many purposes, I will focus on holography’s role in the art world, through the examination of Lake Forest College’s hologram collection, and subsequent curation of the holography gallery. Holograms get almost no exposure today, but it seems that their aesthetically striking nature cannot be ignored by the art world, once presented. If holography were reintroduced to the art world (and perhaps the art world to the holographic community), conditions may be right for a “holographic renaissance,” especially considering the changes in artists’ and audiences’ mindsets and expectations over the time that holography has lain somewhat dormant. My objective for this gallery is to provide a space where this exposure can occur
