In a Thousand Ways, In a Thousand Songs

This paper examines the cultural and musical growth of popular British boy band One Direction. I contextualize my argument through an analysis of various elements of fan culture, boy band history, and popular music theory to argue that, because boy bands’ public images and the music that they perform are both driven by their intended audiences, their music must feature more significantly into discussions about boy bands. I apply this principal to One Direction’s discography to determine the relationship between the band’s music and inauthentic public image

An Economic Analysis of the Solar Energy Potential at Lake Forest College

    Get PDF
The energy industry is evolving towards renewable energy. This study examines the potential of solar energy for electricity usage on the campus of Lake Forest College through both a technical and market analysis. A solar panel was installed on the roof of Carnegie Hall, a large building in the central campus area, for a period of twelve weeks. In addition, regression analysis on the total output of the solar panel in relation to cloud coverage, solar intensity, average temperature, and hours of daylight led to more extensive analysis on the technical potential of solar energy on the campus. The economic analysis contributed by the photovoltaic solar cell system was determined in terms of the energy savings and monetary payback. The results of this investigation concluded that a small portion of the school’s electricity needs can be met by the use of solar energy

Black Entrepreneurs on the Rise: The Success Model

    Get PDF
Black entrepreneurs have several barriers in which prevent them from achieving the standard level of success entrepreneurs, in general, receive. This senior thesis will analyze the different methods that black entrepreneurs must take in order remain competitive and innovative as a minority within the marketplace. This thesis acknowledges and examines the different forms of “glass ceilings” that exist for Black entrepreneurs. Furthermore, it will provide an in-depth analysis on how best to overcome these challenges; this will be done through introducing a success model tailored specifically to Black entrepreneurs. Additionally, this thesis will gather research from primary sources (Black entrepreneurs) on their experiences as minority business owners. My hypothesis is that Black entrepreneurs must adhere to a unique success model that addresses the barriers limiting their ability to achieve success

An Ecological Perspective on College-Level Modern Language Textbook Usage

Textbooks, though often present in modern language classrooms, have received little attention in classroom-based research. This thesis exposes a knowledge gap between textbook content and usage—a gap that spans over two millennia—arguing for Leo van Lier’s ecological approach as a pivotal bridge. Since the late 20th century, language education scholars have criticized textbook content with the assumption that the content determines classroom activities. However, the lack of research on actual textbook usage in modern language classrooms makes these critiques tenuous. This study analyzed observational and interview data from four college-level modern language courses using the ecological perspective. Results suggest that diverse textbook usage in class stems from teachers’ language learning experiences and pedagogical backgrounds
