Correlations between social life and QOL of elderly persons living in mountain villages: a study of the effects of rural planning on community development and the welfare improvements in terms of QOL of elderly persons

    No full text
P(論文)This study examined the impact of rural planning on community development related to improvements in the level of QOL (Quality of Life) of elderly persons. In this report, we conducted a correlational analysis of social life and the QOL evaluation of elderly persons living in the mountainous villages. We interviewed elderly persons living in the mountainous villages regarding their conditions of their social life, and whether they were living alone. In general, elderly persons had low evaluations on QOL on health and use of facilities for travel. The elderly persons who had high QOL evaluations had outdoors activities and their families often visited their homes. In order to elevate the quality of life in these settings, it will be necessary to support activities outside the home and to build a system that facilitates for travel without constraint. This could be an effective method to increase periodic visits from their families, which would enhance the level of QOL for these persons.departmental bulletin pape

Research on the left-behind children and migrant workers in China: the first summary of field work

    No full text
P(論文)This papaer forms part of the Grant-in-Aid (for Challenging Exploratory Research) topic"Research on the Left-behind Children in Chinese Agricultural Villages and Educational Discrimination" (21653095). The second section gives cases of the lifestyles of left-behind children based on a field study carried out in Hunan. The third section investigates where the parents of the children introduced in the second section are and what kind working environment they are in, based on a field study in Zhejiang. This is because living in this kind of environment with their parents who work away from home forms who they are, and this is connected with their own philosophy on child education. Section 4 examines the child education philosophy from this perspective, based on a survey of migrant workers conducted in Zhejiang. The survey has only just begun, so it is by no means qualitatively or substantively complete. Therefore, this paper is considered an interim report. Through this paper, we will discover that the lives of the left-behind children and their parents who work away from home are connected to our own lives in a surprising way. In this sense, the problem of left-behind children in China is not a story far away from home.departmental bulletin pape

Relationship between the "slide ratio" and wheelchair driving: basic investigation in healthy students

    No full text
P(論文)We aimed to determine how the "slide" in the sitting position during wheelchair driving was related to increased displacement and seating comfort. Slide was evaluated using a "slide ratio". Comfort was evaluated using a visual analog scale. This study was conducted with the cooperation of 30 university students. Wheelchair driving was shown to be affected by a displacement level of more than 15% and the majority of students rated a 5% displacement level as comfortable. These values can be used to develop an index of evaluation and revalution of wheelchair seating.departmental bulletin pape

A study of gender order in Japanese sports comics: an interpretive content analysis of images of female managers in baseball comics

    No full text
P(論文)The purpose of this article is to examine the subversion and maintenance of gender order as portrayed in Japanese baseball comics through content analysis of the images of female managers. The content analysis in this study was based on the idea of "social constructionalism," in which researchers read and interpret the texts subjectively, rather than analyze the texts objectively. For this analysis, four baseball comics describing female managers of senior high school baseball teams were chosen, three of which were popular. The content analysis was conducted with interpretive reading of each comic, interpreting the representation of the female baseball manager from feminist's and queer sociologist's perspectives. The findings were as follows: Firstly, female managers were represented as exceptions, especially in earlier published comics. Secondly, they were resistant to opposition from their players and other persons through demonstration of their power and skills. Thirdly, their femininity was a point of focus and some male characters looked upon them as sexual objects. These items are discussed in terms of Sedgwick's`homosocial desire' and Butler's`subversion' and maintenance of the gender order.departmental bulletin pape

    No full text
P(論文)Purpose: Stroke is a major etiological factor in dysphagia. The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors affecting difficulty of oral intake in patients with acute cerebrovascular disorder. Subjects: We recruited the stroke patients with suspected stroke-related dysphagia who were referred to speech, language, and hearing therapists at the emergency hospital for a swallowing examination between March 2009 and March 2010. Method: Multivariate analyses were performed to identify variables significantly associated with thepossibility of oral intake. Results: The mean age of the patients was 76.8 (SD12.7) years. A total of 158 patients suffered from ischemic stroke while 56 suffered from hemorrhagic stroke. At the point of discharge from the hospital, 107 patients (50.0%) resumed a regular diet. Logistic regression analysis identified 12 factors that significantly predicted the resumption of normal oral intakes. Conclusions: Normal or slight disturbance of consciousness (Japan Coma Scale: 0 or I-1), a food test profile score of 4 or above, normal swallowing sound on cervical auscultation, and a score > 0 on the Barthel Index were predictors of oral intake in patients with acute stage of cerebrovascular disorder.departmental bulletin pape

Mood alteration in students who participated in a long-distance walking event and a walk rally

    No full text
P(論文)This study aimed to evaluate mood alteration in students who participated in two walking events: a long-distance walking event and a walk rally. In each event, alteration of mood ("pleasantness", "relaxation", and "anxiety") was measured using a mood scale before, during, and after each event. In the long-distance event, significant alterations in "pleasantness" (p < 0.001) and "anxiety" (p < 0.01) were observed. In a comparison of measurements made before and after the walking events, "pleasantness" scores increased (p < 0.001) while "anxiety" scores decreased (p < 0.01). In the walk rally, there were significant alterations in "pleasantness" (p < 0.001), "relaxation" (p < 0.05), and "anxiety" (p < 0.01). Specifically, "pleasantness" scores increased during (p < 0.001) and after (p < 0.001) the rally compared with before the rally; "relaxation" scores increased during the rally (p < 0.05) whereas "anxiety" scores decreased (p < 0.05). There was also a significant decrease in "anxiety" scores taken during the rally and those taken after the rally (p < 0.01). In both events, an increase in positive mood and a decrease in negative mood resulted from transient exercise. Differences in mood alteration were found between the events. In comparison to the long-distance walking event, the walk rally appeared to promote an increase in "relaxation" and a decrease in "anxiety", possibly because it is completed in a comparatively short time and has competitive characteristics.departmental bulletin pape

Case study of a child with developmental dyslexia and dysgraphia who visited the university with the chief complaint of dysarthria

P(論文)Here we present the case of a child who visited the university with the chief complaint of dysarthria. He initially suffered from dysarthria and mild mental retardation, but later developed serious problems with reading and writing. We considered his phonological processing ability and a possible connection with developmental dyslexia. The child was a 7-year-old boy who was in second grade at a regular elementary school. At 5 years of age, he was diagnosed with a submucous cleft palate and underwent surgery to correct this. After surgery, he was evaluated and started receiving training. He was diagnosed with language delay due to mild mental retardation and dysgraphia accompanying underdeveloped dysarthria, and received 7 months of ST training. In the re-evaluation that followed his training, he was not seen to have general mental retardation, but his problems with reading and writing became apparent. Cross-examining his problems reading and writing with a triangle model and visual cognition processes suggested a problem with bilateral processing of writing and phonology. This was a decoding problem, which is the basic condition of a patient with developmental dyslexia. The boy's core problem thus appeared to be a phonological type of developmental dyslexia.departmental bulletin pape

This study aimed to have pharmacy students understand the medical care team and recognize the importance of each healthcare professional's role in medical practice through the implementation of a oneday visitation experience. Thirty fourth-year pharmacy students participated in the study. Half were given an opportunity to visit the Department of Radiology at University of Miyazaki Hospital; the other half were not, and served as the control group. The students observed the medical team diagnose and provide medical treatment to patients and received explanations from various healthcare professionals. They then had a question-and-answer session with healthcare professionals. The students were subsequently given questionnaires to evaluate the impact the visitation experience had on them. Students evinced huge enthusiasm in communicating with physicians and allied healthcare professionals in the one-day experience. The experience increased their motivation to study pharmacy and helped them recognize the importance of the medical care team. Students showed a positive attitude toward the one-day experience. This experiential visit was therefore very meaningful for senior-year pharmacy students. A visitation experience in a department providing diagnosis and treatment for patients affords a unique practical training and educational strategy for understanding the role of each healthcare professional.departmental bulletin pape
