Broad-scale factors shaping the ecological niche and geographic distribution of Spirodela polyrhiza
The choice of appropriate independent variables to create models characterizing ecological niches of species is of critical importance in distributional ecology. This set of dimensions in which a niche is defined can inform about what factors limit the distributional potential of a species. We used a multistep approach to select relevant variables for modeling the ecological niche of the aquatic Spirodela polyrhiza, taking into account variability arising from using distinct algorithms, calibration areas, and spatial resolutions of variables. We found that, even after an initial selection of meaningful variables, the final set of variables selected based on statistical inference varied considerably depending on the combination of algorithm, calibration area, and spatial resolution used. However, variables representing extreme temperatures and dry periods were more consistently selected than others, despite the treatment used, highlighting their importance in shaping the distribution of this species. Other variables related to seasonality of solar radiation, summer solar radiation, and some soil proxies of nutrients in water, were selected commonly but not as frequently as the ones mentioned above. We suggest that these later variables are also important to understanding the distributional potential of the species, but that their effects may be less pronounced at the scale at which they are represented for the needs of this type of modeling. Our results suggest that an informed definition of an initial set of variables, a series of statistical steps for filtering and exploring these predictors, and model selection exercises that consider multiple sets of predictors, can improve determination of variables that shape the niche and distribution of the species, despite differences derived from factors related to data or modeling algorithms
BattX: An equivalent circuit model for lithium-ion batteries over broad current ranges
Advanced battery management is as important for lithium-ion battery systems as the brain is for the human body. Its performance is based on the use of fast and accurate battery models. However, the mainstream equivalent circuit models and electrochemical models have yet to meet this need well, due to their struggle with either predictive accuracy or computational complexity. This problem has acquired urgency as some emerging battery applications running across broad current ranges, e.g., electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft, can hardly find usable models from the literature. Motivated to address this problem, we develop an innovative model in this study. Called BattX, the model is an equivalent circuit model that draws comparisons to a single particle model with electrolyte and thermal dynamics, thus combining their respective merits to be computationally efficient, accurate, and physically interpretable. The model design pivots on leveraging multiple circuits to approximate major electrochemical and physical processes in charging/discharging. Given the model, we develop a multipronged approach to design experiments and identify its parameters in groups from experimental data. Experimental validation proves that the BattX model is capable of accurate voltage prediction for charging/discharging across low to high C-rates
Cost-effectiveness of Lifestyle Africa: an adaptation of the diabetes prevention programme for delivery by community health workers in urban South Africa
Background
Lifestyle Africa is an adapted version of the Diabetes Prevention Program designed for delivery by community health workers to socioeconomically disadvantaged populations in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Results from the Lifestyle Africa trial conducted in an under-resourced community in South Africa indicated that the programme had a significant effect on reducing haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c).
Objective
To estimate the cost of implementation and the cost-effectiveness (in cost per point reduction in HbA1c) of the Lifestyle Africa programme to inform decision-makers of the resources required and the value of this intervention.
Methods
Interviews were held with project administrators to identify the activities and resources required to implement the intervention. A direct-measure micro-costing approach was used to determine the number of units and unit cost for each resource. The incremental cost per one point improvement in HbA1c was calculated.
Results
The intervention equated to 71 United States dollars (USD) in implementation costs per participant and a 0.26 improvement in HbA1c per participant.
Conclusions
Lifestyle Africa reduced HbA1c for relatively little cost and holds promise for addressing chronic disease in LMIC. Decision-makers should consider the comparative clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of this intervention when making resource allocation decisions
Development of Drug Release Model for Suspensions in ESCAR (Emulator of SubCutaneous Absorption and Release)
We recently developed an in vitro testing system, namely, ESCAR (Emulator of SubCutaneous Absorption and Release). The objective of this work was to investigate drug release behaviors of unmilled and milled suspensions in ESCAR. A mass transport-based model was developed to describe the multi-step drug release process, including drug dissolution, particle settling, drug distribution/partition, and drug permeation through the membrane(s). To address the particle settling effect, a correction factor was included in the model and its value was obtained by data fitting. It was found that, for both suspensions, (i) the experimental data of various dose/formulation combinations could be fit by the developed model; (ii) the dose effect on drug release was offset by the particle settling effect. This model may help to reduce experimental efforts and facilitate subcutaneous suspension formulation development using ESCAR
Quality control in resting-state fMRI: the benefits of visual inspection
Background: A variety of quality control (QC) approaches are employed in resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) to determine data quality and ultimately inclusion or exclusion of a fMRI data set in group analysis. Reliability of rs-fMRI data can be improved by censoring or “scrubbing” volumes affected by motion. While censoring preserves the integrity of participant-level data, including excessively censored data sets in group analyses may add noise. Quantitative motion-related metrics are frequently reported in the literature; however, qualitative visual inspection can sometimes catch errors or other issues that may be missed by quantitative metrics alone. In this paper, we describe our methods for performing QC of rs-fMRI data using software-generated quantitative and qualitative output and trained visual inspection.
Results: The data provided for this QC paper had relatively low motion-censoring, thus quantitative QC resulted in no exclusions. Qualitative checks of the data resulted in limited exclusions due to potential incidental findings and failed pre-processing scripts.
Conclusion: Visual inspection in addition to the review of quantitative QC metrics is an important component to ensure high quality and accuracy in rs-fMRI data analysis
Crystal structures of di-μ-chlorido-bis({(E)-5-(ethylamino)-4-methyl-2-[(pyridin-2-yl)diazenyl]phenolato}copper(II)) and chloridobis(1,10-phenanthroline)copper(II) chloride tetrahydrate
The dark-red title complex crystallized from an equimolar methanol solution of (E)-5-(ethylamino)-4-methyl-2-[(pyridin-2-yl)diazenyl]phenol and CuCl2(phen) (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) as a centrosymmetric dimer, [CuCl(C14H15N4O)]2. The Cu atoms are bridged by two Cl ligands and have a slightly distorted square-pyramidal coordination, where two N atoms from the azo and the pyridine moieties, a phenolic O and a Cl atom comprise the base and the other Cl occupies the apex position. The apical Cu—Cl bond, 2.6192 (4) Å, is longer than the basal one, 2.2985 (3) Å, due to Jahn–Teller distortion. The dimers are associated via weak intermolecular hydrogen bonds and π–π stacking interactions between phenyl and pyridine rings. A monomeric by-product of the same reaction, [CuCl(phen)2]Cl·4H2O, has a trigonal–bipyramidal coordination of Cu with equatorial Cl ligand, and extensive outer-sphere disorder. In the structure of 4, the packing of cations leaves continuous channels containing disordered Cl− anions and solvent molecules. The identity of the solvent (water or a water/methanol mixture) was not certain. The disordered anion/solvent regions comprise 28% of the unit-cell volume. The disorder was approximated by five partly occupied positions of the Cl− anion and ten positions of O atoms with a total occupancy of 3, giving a total of 48 electrons per asymmetric unit, in agreement with the integral electron density of 47.8 electrons in the disordered region, as was estimated using the BYPASS-type solvent-masking program [van der Sluis & Spek (1990). Wikipedia and Large Language Models: Perfect Pairing or Perfect Storm?
This is the submitted manuscript. The article is due to be published in 2023Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to explore the potential benefits and challenges of using large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT to edit Wikipedia.
Approach: The first portion of this paper provides background about Wikipedia and LLMs, explicating briefly how each works. The paper's second section then explores both the ways that LLMs can be used to make Wikipedia a stronger site and the challenges that these technologies pose to Wikipedia editors. The paper's final section explores the implications for information professionals.
Findings: The paper argues that LLMs can be used to proofread Wikipedia articles, outline potential articles, and generate usable Wikitext. The pitfalls include the technology's potential to generate text that is plagiarized or violates copyright, its tendency to produce "original research," and its tendency to generate incorrect or biased information.
Originality: While there has been limited discussion among Wikipedia editors about the use of LLMs when editing the site, hardly any scholarship has been given to how these models can impact Wikipedia's development and quality. This paper thus aims to fill this gap in knowledge by examining both the potential benefits and pitfalls of using LLMs on Wikipedia
Minimum Joint Depth for Moment Frames with High-Strength Materials
This paper reports results from four large-scale interior beam column connections without transverse beams or slabs tested under reversed cyclic displacements. The specimens, which included the first of interior beam-column connections constructed with Grade 100 (690) reinforcement with bar deformations similar to those available in U.S. practice, had Grade 60 or 100 (420 or 690) bars, 4 or 10 ksi (28 or 69 MPa) concrete, and varied column depthto-beam bar diameter ratios. The specimens all exhibited strengths greater than the nominal strength, retained at least 80% of their strength to drift ratios exceeding 5%, and exceeded ACI 374 acceptance criteria at a 3% drift ratio for components of special moment frames, demonstrating that well-detailed joints constructed with high-strength materials behave satisfactorily. The data add evidence that joints constructed with high-strength concrete exhibit less bond decay, and recommendations are made for accounting for this effect in design. Results from the specimen constructed with normal-strength materials, considered in the context of prior tests, suggest a need to increase the minimum joint depth for special moment frames. Considerable improvement in behavior associated with reduced bond damage within the joint is obtained from a 20% increase in the minimum column depth-to-beam bar diameter ratio required in ACI 318-19
