Relief depicting a procession of female bearers of offerings on the way of procession at Carchemish. It can be dated to the 9th century BC, it was found in the extinct city of Carchemish located on the west bank of Euphrates River, in southeast of Gaziantep, Turkey, and northeast of Aleppo, Syria and it is currently housed in Anatolian Civilizations Museum, Ankara.Black & white photograph
Reliefs of Southern Gate, Alacahöyük
Reliefs of Southern Gate, Alacahöyük. They were made inside the Sphinx Gate and located on the right of the two great sphinxes of the southern outer monumental gateway which was set between two towers. In the doorjambs are two 13 foot hight monoliths which were carved to create 7 foot high sphinxes. Inside this Sphinx Gate was a large Hittite building complex. An important city in pre-Hittite times, Alacahöyük was overshadowed by the nearby capital Hattusa of the Hittites after the Hittite conquest. Alacahöyük located 36 km to the northeast of the Hattusa (Boğazköy), in the Çorum province of Turkey. Although the most important findings are the artifacts from the pre-Hittite royal tombs dating from about 2500 BC, the outstanding monuments today are from the Hittite period.Black & white photograph

South gate - East wall in Karatepe, relief of banquet scene
Detail from a relief on the East wall of South gate at Karatepe depicting the king sitting in a banquet scene with his musicians play lyres and other stringed instrument, and instruments more likely resembling a drum and flute and servants yet this segment focuses more on the servants bringing food to the festivities. This is one of the reliefs adorning inner walls of the gate-houses depicting cultural, mythological and daily-life scenes carved on blocks of basalt in Karatepe, the Late Hittite fortress (also known as Aslantaş) in the province of Osmaniye. The site was first discovered by Helmut Bossert and Halet Çambel in 1946. The fortress was founded in the 8th century BC by Azatiwata, ruler of the plain of Adana.Black & white photograph
On the additive dilogarithm
Let k be a field of characteristic zero, and let k[epsilon](n) :=k[epsilon]/(epsilon(n)). We construct an additive dilogarithm Li(2,n) : B(2) (k[epsilon](n))-> k(circle plus(n-1)), where B(2) is the Bloch group which is crucial in studying weight two motivic cohomology. We use this construction to show that the Bloch complex of k[epsilon](n) has cohomology groups expressed in terms of the K-groups K((.))(k[epsilon](n)) as expected. Finally we comparethis construction to the construction of the additive dilogarithm by Bloch and Esnault defined on the complex T(n)Q(2)(k)
Dielectric response and tunability of a dielectric-paraelectric composite
A theoretical study was carried out to determine the dielectric response and tunability of a composite consisting of a linear, low-loss dielectric matrix with uniformly sized, randomly distributed paraelectric Ba0.60Sr0.40TiO3 (BST 60/40) particles as functions of the volume fraction and size of the particles. The field dependence of the polarization and the dielectric response of the inclusions are specified through a nonlinear thermodynamic model and then incorporated into a two-dimensional finite element analysis. Near the percolation threshold for BST particles (similar to 27% to 45% depending on the particle size), high dielectric tunabilities with a lower effective permittivity than monolithic BST can be realized. Geolocator tracking of Great Reed-Warblers (acrocephalus arundinaceus) identifies key regions for migratory wetland specialists in the Middle East and sub-Saharan East Africa
Wetland-dependent migratory songbirds represent one of the most vulnerable groups of birds on the planet, with >67% of wetland-obligate species threatened with extinction. One of the major hurdles for conservation efforts is determining the migration routes, stopover sites, and wintering sites of these species. We describe an annual migration cycle revealed by geolocator tracking of Great Reed-Warblers (Acrocephalus arundinaceus) breeding in the Aras River wetlands of eastern Turkey. Because of its relatively large size and breeding ground fidelity, the Great Reed-Warbler is an excellent candidate for geolocator studies and can serve as an indicator species for other wetland songbirds, many of which are particularly threatened in the Middle East. All birds made use of at least 2 wintering grounds in South Sudan, on the Indian Ocean coast and on the western shores of Lake Malawi, as well as several important stopover sites. We also identified a counterclockwise migration path into and out of Africa. Throughout the year, these birds encountered 277 Important Bird Areas, >40% of which had little or no protection. Many species of wetland songbird, particularly threatened species, may be too rare or too small to be the focus of similar studies. Our results not only allow for comparisons with other Great Reed-Warbler populations, but also reveal previously unknown stopover and wintering locations to target conservation efforts that will help wetland-dependent bird species in the Middle East and East Africa
Spectral tuning of liquid microdroplets standing on a superhydrophobic surface using electrowetting
Using electrowetting, we demonstrate reversible spectral tuning of the whispering gallery modes of glycerol/water microdroplets standing on a superhydrophobic surface by up to 4.7 nm at 400 V. Our results can inspire electrically tunable optical switches and filters based on microdroplets on a superhydrophobic surface. The sensitivity of the observed spectral drift to the contact angle can also be used to measure the contact angles of microdroplets on a superhydrophobic surface.
