Near-infrared resonant cavity enhanced silicon microsphere photodetector
Elastic scattering intensity calculations at 90° and 0° for the transverse electric and transverse magnetic polarized light were performed at 1200nm for a 50 μm radius and 3.5 refractive index silicon microsphere. The mode spacing between morphology dependent resonances was found to be 1.76 nm. The linewidth of the morphology dependent resonances was observed to be 0.02 nm, which leads to a quality factor on the order of 104

Semiconductor microspheres in optoelectronics
Semiconductor microspheres coupled to optical fibers are used for optical channel dropping in the IR communication wavelenghts of 800 to 1500 nm. The observed morphology dependent resonances have quality factors of 100000. The measured quality factors are limited by the sensitivity of the experimental setup. These optical resonances provide the necessary narrow linewidths, that are needed for high resolution optical communication applications. In addition to optical communication, detection, and switching applications of this optoelectronic system is studied experimentally and theoretically. The microsphere, optical fiber system shows promise as a building block for optoelectronic integration
Rate distortion optimized slicing over bit error channels
In this paper, we study the problem of optimizing slice sizes and locations for video transmission over bit error channels. We propose a method that utilizes estimation of slice rate and distortion which is a function of the inter-macroblock dependency as exploited in the video codec. First we experimentally show that our estimation is effective. Since there are practically numerous possibilities for slice configurations and one must actually check all possibilities for a complete search, we assume segmentation of macroblocks so that a slice can only start at the segments. Although this results in a slightly suboptimal solution, it reduces the number of possibilities. However there are still practically too many configurations. Then we use the proposed RD estimation method and combine it with a dynamic programming approach to effectively determine the most optimal slice configuration. RD optimization is carried out in terms of minimizing the expected Lagrangian using the expected distortion of a slice. We assume that the physical layer is capable of generating an error report showing which transmission units are received in error. This allows us to use NEWPRED with macroblock level feedback and prevent wrongful decoding of erroneous macroblocks. We compare the proposed system with the two common approaches namely, fixed number of MBs per slice and fixed number of bits per slice and see that the proposed method performs better than both. © 2005 SPIE and IS&T

Excavation site of Hattuša, the capital city of Hittites (today in the Çorum Province, Turkey) from their beginning in the 17th century BC until the collapse of the empire in early 12th century BC. By the 12th century the city came to cover an area of 182 hectars, surrounded by a 3.3 km long defensive wall. The Aslanlı Kapı (Lion Gate) with two stone lions were believed to protect the city from evil spirits. The Lion Gate was one of the six defensive walls of the city. Besides natural outcrops that were turned out to the part of the walls, massive ramparts were made to create artificial fortresses.Black & white photograph

Influence of three-dimensional reconstruction method for building a model of the cervical spine on its biomechanical responses: a finite element analysis study
In some finite element analysis studies of models of sections of the spine, the three-dimensional solid model is built by assuming symmetry about the mid-sagittal plane of the section, whereas in other studies, the model is built from the exact geometry of the section. The influence of the method used to build the solid model on model parameters, in the case of the cervical spine, has not been reported in the literature. This issue is the subject of this study, with the section being C2-C7, the applied loadings being extension, flexion, left lateral bending, and right axial rotation (each of magnitude 1 Nm), and the model parameters determined being rotation, intradiskal pressure, and facet load at each of the segments. When all the parameter results were considered, it was found that, by and large, the influence of solid model construction method used (exact geometry vs assumption of symmetry about the mid-sagittal plane of the section) was marginal. As construction of a symmetric finite element model requires less time and effort, construction of an asymmetric model may be justified in special cases only
