Library and Information Science Schools in Northern India: Present Status
The aim of the present study is to investigate the prevalent scenario of
Library and Information Science (LIS) education system in Northern Indian states
to focus about the courses offered, intake capacity, faculty and other ingredients
essential for imparting qualitative education in the discipline of library and
information science.
Design/Methodology/Approach: Questionnaire tool is employed to obtain data
from the institutions imparting education atdifferent levelsin Northern India.
Findings: The study reveals that the schools are having appropriate infrastructure;
however have a scope for further improvement in areas like knowledge resources
available in libraries, computer labs, faculty strength, teaching methodologies and
teaching aids.
Limitations: The research restricted to a limited number of institutions highlights
different facets of library and information science education in Northern India
only.
Research Implications: Findings of the study will facilitate the concerned
authorities at the national and local level to take appropriate measures in
improving the standard of Libraryand Information Science education

Open Access Journals in Library and Information Science:The Story so Far
Abstract
Purpose: Internet has triggered the growth of scholarly publications and every
discipline is witnessing an unremitting growth in the scholarly market. Open
access, the product of Internet has also captured the global disciplines. Library
and Information Science, is also witnessing a dramatic growth in the open access
field. The study explores the status of open access titles in the field of Library and
Information Science (LIS). Various characteristics highlighting open access titles in
the field of LIS are featured in the study.
Design/Methodology/Approach: A systematic method for characterizing the
open access titles in the field of Library and Information Science was carried out
by extracting the data from Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), Open J-
Gate, and Ulrichsweb.com.
Findings: The results clearly reveal an expounding growth of open access titles in
the field of Library and Information Science. Commercial publishers have also
joined hands as open access market players. Indexing policies of OA titles in LIS
need to be restructured and low income nations have to evolve in the field of OA
bazaar.
Research Implications: The study will be helpful for the researchers in exploring
the open access titles in the field of LIS. Furthermore, it can act as an eye opener
to the scholarly world to know about the real status of open access titles in the
field of LIS.
Future Research: Future research can be carried out to expedite the innovative

Effect of Single and Mixed Surfactants on Antioxidant Activity of Bio-Active Molecules
Surfactants have unique physico-chemical properties as a result of their amphiphillic
molecular structure and are fundamental to life and living bodies.1 Most of
amphiphiles display very important phenomena such as surface activity, wetting
adsorption and micelle formation with the resultant functions like solubilization,
emulsification, dispersion, drug delivery, ion transport etc.2,3 Micelles are colloidal
particles with the size in the nanometre range, into which many amphiphillic
molecules self assemble spontaneously.4 They are versatile products and have found
application in emulsion polymerization,5,6 enhanced oil recovery,7 biomedical
materials,8 and biomemitism.9 Surfactant mixtures have become more interesting than
single surfactant solutions due to their wide technological applications and their
molecular interactions on complex supramolecular systems.10 The interactions
between water soluble polymers and surfactants are of considerable interest from an
industrial point of view as well as because they mimic protein membrane
interactions.11 The use of aqueous miceller media in kinetic studies is rapidly
increasing with the aim to replace the conventional organic solvent based syntheses
by micelle based syntheses, which not only provides a greater control over
stereoselectivity but is environment friendly as well.12,1
Effect of Planted Bulb Weight, Nitrogen Application Time and Deheading on Bulb Production in Daffodil cv. Tunis
A study entitled “Effect of Planted Bulb Weight, Nitrogen Application Time and Deheading on Bulb Production in Daffodil cv. Tunis” was conducted during winter seasons of 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 at Research Farm, Division of Floriculture, Medicinal and Aromatic Plants, SKUAST-Kashmir, Shalimar. The treatment consisting of 3-factors viz. 3 planted bulb weight (10.00, 12.50 and 15.00 t/ha), 3 nitrogen application time (two-splits in 2nd week of November and 1st week of March, (two splits in 1st week of March and 1st week of April) and single split (1st week of March) and 2 deheadings (no deheading and deheading at tight bud stage) was laid out in randomized block design and replicated thrice.
The study revealed that planted bulb weight at 10.00 t ha-1 recorded significantly minimum days to sprouting. However leaf number, leaf dry weight and leaf area were higher at 15.00 t ha-1 at different growth periods during 2010-2011. Periodic leaf number, leaf dry weight and leaf area plant-1 was significantly highest with nitrogen application in 2 splits one each in 1st week of March and 1st week of April, while days to bulb sprouting were significantly minimum with 2 nitrogen splits each in 2nd week of November and 1st week of March. Dehading at tight bud stage significantly reduced the number of days to bulb sprouting but deheading treatment did not affect periodic leaf number, leaf dry weight and leaf area plant-1. Planted bulb weight at 15.00 t ha-1 recorded significantly higher leaf RGR at 30-60 and 60-90 DAM (Days after March 1st) during 2009-2010 and 2010-2011, respectively. Nitrogen application in 2 splits in 1st week of March and 1st week of April recorded significantly higher leaf RGR at 30-60 and 60-90 DAM during 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 respectively. Deheading at tight bud stage recorded significantly maximum leaf RGR at 60-90 DAM during 2010-2011, respectively. Single nitrogen split in 1st week of March recorded significantly highest leaf N content at 30 DAM and took minimum days to flowering while leaf N content 60 and 90 DAM was higher with 2 nitrogen splits each in 1st week of March and 1st week of April. Planted bulb weight at 15.00 t ha-1 recorded significantly highest leaf N content and maximum days to flowering. Deheading treatment did not affect days to flowering but deheading at tight bud stage registered significantly higher leaf N content. Periodic bulb dry weight, bulb RGR and bulb weight plant-1 was significantly highest with bulb weight at 10.00 t ha-1. Nitrogen application in 2 splits each in 1st week of March and 1st week of April recorded significantly higher bulb dry weight, bulb RGR and bulb weight plant-1. Deheading at tight bud stage registered significantly maximum bulb dry weight, bulb RGR and bulb weight plant-1 at different growth periods. Bulb N content was not affected by planted bulb weight, where as 2 splits of nitrogen in 1st week of March and 1st week of April and deheading at tight bud stage recorded significantly maximum bulb N content.
Total bulb weight (22.36 t ha-1) and total bulbs of different grades (9, 86,400) were significantly higher at planted bulb weight at 15.00 t ha-1. Nitrogen in 2 splits at 1st week of March and 1st week of April registered significantly highest. Total bulb yield weight (19.90 t ha-1) and total bulbs of different grades (8,13,00) and deheading at tight bud stage recorded maximum total bulb weight (18.58 t ha-1)) and total bulbs of different grades (7,74,700). Propagation coefficient was significantly highest in planted bulb weight at 15.00 t ha-1. Nitrogen in 2 splits in 1st week of March and 1st week of April recorded maximum propagation coefficient whereas deheading treatment did not affect it. Proportion of single and double nosed bulbs were also higher at 15.00 t ha-1 and nitrogen application in 2 splits each at 1st week of March and 1st week of April respectively. Available nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium content in soil after crop harvest remained higher for different treatment combinations than their initial status in soil before start of experimentation. Planted bulb weight at 15.00 t ha-1 supplied with N in 2 splits one each at 1st week of March and 1st week of April and deheaded at tight bud stage (W3 N2 D1) realized higher net returns of (` 6,30,508 ha-1) with benefit cost ratio of (0.51
Genetic Studies for Yield and Yield Attributing Traits in Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.)
The present investigation entitled “Genetic Studies for Yield and Yield attributing traits in Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.)” was carried out to generate information on genetic variability, combining ability (general and specific), nature and magnitude of gene effects and nature and magnitude of heterosis. The experimental materials consisted of ten diverse lines of Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) viz. Arka Vikas, KS-227, VLT-32, DARL-63, DVRT-I, Local, Marglobe, Shalimar-II, Roma and Shalimar-I. The parents were crossed in diallel fashion to generate forty five crosses. The crosses and parents were evaluated as per Method II and Model I of Griffing (1956 a, b) in randomized complete block design during Kharif, 2011 at three different locations viz., Vegetable Experimental Farm of Division of Vegetable Science, SKUAST (K), Shalimar (E1); Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Malangpora (E2) and Regional Research Station, SKUAST (K), Wadura (E3). The observations were recorded on days to first fruit set, days to first picking, plant height (cm), number of primary branches per plant, fruit size (cm2), flesh thickness (mm), number of fruits per plant, average fruit weight (g), fruit yield per plant (kg), number of locules, TSS (°Brix), Vitamin C (mg/100g), Lycopene (mg/100g), Acidity (%), Dry matter content in fruits (%) and Specific gravity. The data were analysed as per standard statistical procedures. Analysis of variance revealed significant differences among the parents and crosses indicating that the materials selected for present investigation were diverse. Analysis of variance for combining ability revealed that variance due to gca and sca was significant for all the traits suggesting the importance of both types of variances in the inheritance of traits. GCA and SCA also interacted significantly with the environments. The estimates of dominance variance were higher in magnitude than corresponding estimates of additive variance indicating the preponderance of non-additive gene action. None of the parents exhibited desirable gca effects for all the traits simultaneously. However, overall ranking of genotypes revealed that the parents Arka Vikas, KS-227, Roma, DVRT-I and DARL-63 exhibited significant desirable gca effects for most of the traits. None of the crosses exhibited significant desirable sca effects for all the traits simultaneously. However, the crosses Arka Vikas x Marglobe, Local x Shalimar-II and Arka Vikas x DVRT-I were found to be desirable for most of the traits. These cross combinations also exhibited moderate to high values for TSS, Vitamin C, Lycopene and Acidity depicting the superior quality of these crosses. The component analysis revealed the preponderance of non-additive gene effects in the inheritance of traits. Net dominance effect was significant and positive for most of the traits indicating positive direction of dominance. Positive and significant ‘F’ values for number of primary branches/plant, flesh thickness, number of fruits per plant, average fruit weight and fruit yield/plant indicated positive direction of dominance. Average degree of dominance was more than unity in all the traits indicating over-dominance. Non-significant values of t2 and deviation of regression coefficient from unity depicted the absence of epistasis for all the traits in all the environments and pooled analysis. Higher magnitude of heterosis in plant height, number of primary branches per plant, fruit size, number of fruits per plant and average fruit weight suggested the possibility of yield enhancement through exploitation of heterosis
