On an inequality of S. Bernstein and estimates for the moduli of the zeros of a polynomial.
The present thesis entitled “On an inequality of S. Bernstein and estimates for the moduli of the zeros of a polynomial" is an outcome of the work carried out by author during the last two years at the Post Graduate Department of Mathematics, University of Kashmir, Srinagar. This Thesis consists of four chapters. In the first chapter, we have studied inequalities on the Maximum Modulus of a Polynomial and its Derivative. In the second chapter, we considered Lacunary type polynomials and obtain inequalities concerning the polar derivative of a polynomial. The third chapter deals with certain problems concerning a family of B operators preserving the inequalities between polynomials. Fourth chapter concerns with the location of the zeros of a polynomial with restricted coefficients.Digital copy of Ph.D thesis.University of Kashmir
Emergence and role of Bureaucracy In J&K: a sociological study.
This Ph. D thesis gives an account of the emergence of bureaucracy, with its pattern and present stage of development and growth in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. At the same time, it gives the details of the roles performed by bureaucracy in the State, notwithstanding all the manifold pulls and pressures of political compulsions, inept policy planning, lack of dedicated and motivated personnel, ambitious and autocratic attitudes of the seniors, constrained working conditions and above all, the after effects of the past political turmoil and militancy related incidences. The study started with the conviction that public administration, not only needs to be responsible, but responsive too. Actually, the success of any nation or state is directly proportional to the success of its public institutions. Common masses in J&K seem to have developed an aversion towards their government, due to many known and unknown reasons. Very few people believe that J&K government really functions; while most of them believe that it is incompetent. All this has led to a crisis in the public institutions of J&KDigital copy of ThesisUniversity of Kashmi
Some contributions to optimality criteria and duality in Multiobjective mathematical programming.
This thesis entitled, “some contributions to optimality criteria and duality in multiobjective mathematical programming”, offers an extensive study on optimality, duality and mixed duality in a variety of multiobjective mathematical programming that includes nondifferentiable nonlinear programming, variational problems containing square roots of a certain quadratic forms and support functions which are prominent nondifferentiable convex functions. This thesis also deals with optimality, duality and mixed duality for differentiable and nondifferentiable variational problems involving higher order derivatives, and presents a close relationship between the results of continuous programming problems through the problems with natural boundary conditions between results of their counter parts in nonlinear programming. Finally it formulates a pair of mixed symmetric and self dual differentiable variational problems and gives the validation of various duality results under appropriate invexity and generalized invexity hypotheses. These results are further extended to a nondifferentiable case that involves support functions.Digital copy of Thesis.University of Kashmir
Microwave-assisted organic reactions-A comparative account.
In recent years, the focal point in chemical research is the development of environmentally friendly processes in terms of sustainable chemistry. Of particular importance is a reduction in the amount of solvents and hazardous substances and more efficient use of energy, microwave-assisted synthesis being one of them. In the electromagnetic spectrum, microwave radiation area is located between Infrared and Radio waves having a wave length in the range of 0.3mm to 0.5m corresponding to frequencies between 1 × 1012 - 6 × 108 Hz. In the laboratory, microwave instruments generate the waves corresponding to a wavelength of 12.2 cm and energy of 2.45 GHz, as per the international convention so that any interference with telecommunications and radar equipments is minimized. Microwaves are reflected off metal surfaces but pass through paper, glass, china ware and plastic ware. Hence these materials find extensive use as reaction vessels or utensils since microwaves are absorbed directly by the chemical species or food without affecting the container. Microwaves penetrate several centimeters deep into the material to be heated because of a high penetration power and the dissipation of energy results in a quick and even rise in temperature of the species. Microwave-assisted organic synthesis has blossomed into a useful technique and accelerations have been observed in a wide range of reactions. Microwaves have been successfully applied to combinatorial chemistry whereby synthesis of large numbers of molecules is achieved by varying combinations of molecular building blocks and permutations of modular components. Control of the desired selectivity (chemo, regio, stereo and enantioselectivity) is the most important objective in organic synthesis. The application of microwave irradiation involves the modifications of the reactivity as well as selectivity in relation to conventional heating.Digital copy of Thesis.University of Kashmir
Edna O’Brien as a postmodernist novelist.
Edna O’Brien is one of the most prolific and versatile writers of the twentieth century. She made her debut in 1960 with The Country Girls and since then has authored many novels, short stories, plays, poems, screenplays, children’s fiction and non-fictional prose.
In spite of being a prolific writer, she is little known outside Ireland, the United Kingdom and the United States of America. Though being a recipient of many literary awards, she has not been recognized worldwide. By and large, her works have suffered neglect from literary critics and scholars, and whatsoever has been written has been written from a limited and orthodox point of view. There are two main reasons for this neglect by the literary critical establishment. One is that critics focused more attention on the so-called ‘autobiographical’ nature of her works. This tendency proved very detrimental for the author. Amanda Greenwood writes, “The reductive tendency to identify the author with her female protagonists has been largely instrumental in her relegation to ‘popular fiction’.” The other reason is that her own dandyish personality, flamboyant nature and nationality, which made her to be stereotyped as Celtic and wild, attracted greater attention than any serious critical debate on her works. Claudia Pattison commented in a review that “with her flame-red hair, milky skin and mesmerising green-flecked eyes, [O’Brien] is a bewitching Celtic beauty.” Her beauty and persona led critics to doubt her writing ability. David Goodwin agreed that “because Edna is a more glamorous woman sometimes people don’t take her so seriously.”3 Edna O’Brien was herself well aware of this fact. She once remarked that “if you happen to have your hair done, well, then you can’t be a ‘serious’ writer.”4 Rebecca Pelan also points out that it was O’Brien’s public persona which led to “the relegation of [her] writing to the realm of popular fiction, a … category which allows the content of her writing to go virtually unnoticed.”However, she always insisted on being a serious writer. She once said to a reviewer, “I am a serious writer. Take more notice of the books than how i look.”Digital copy of Ph.D thesis.University of Kashmir
Ethnicity in Literature: A Study of the Select Short Fiction of Ireland and Kashmir.
Ethnic literature is the body of written works by people from a distinctive culture, language, or religion. Afro Caribbean and African writers—Aime Cesaire, Frantz Fanon, Chinua Achebe, for instance, have made significant contribution to the theory and practice of ethnic criticism that explores the traditions, sometimes suppressed or underground, of ethnic literary activity. They provide a critique of representations of ethnic identity as found within the majority culture. More recently, scholars like Henry Louis Gates, Toni Morrison, and Kwame Anthony
Appiah have drawn attention to the problems inherent in applying theoretical models derived from Euro-centric paradigms to minority works of literature, exploring new interpretive strategies for understanding the vernacular traditions of ethnic/racial groups that have been historically marginalized by dominant cultures.Digital copy of Thesis.University of Kashmir
US Presence in Afghanistan and its Impact on Central Asia.
The US war in Afghanistan and the controversial attack on Iraq and insurgency are examples of contemporary globalization. The US and her allies have made their presence not only in Afghanistan but different parts of the world are under siege. The US initiated military action in Afghanistan with two aims: firstly, to defeat al-Qaeda and their Taliban allies, and secondly, in concert with the Afghan people and the international community, to facilitate the creation of democratic conditions which would thwart the terrorist sanctuaries within Afghanistan. The overarching US government strategy for winning the war on terrorism and rebuilding the state of Afghanistan is predicated on six lines of operation that include: a) improving governance ; b) defeating the terrorist threat; c) improving political stability; d) enhancing economic and social development; e) implementing regional and donor strategies; and f) integrating the US government actions.
The US led coalition in Afghanistan was strong with forty countries involved in so-called Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and NATO’s International Security Assistance Force. The US military had nearly 30,000 troops under Enduring Freedom, and about 20,000 coalition troops from 18 nations, the total was over 25,000.Digital copy of Thesis.University of Kashmir
