Fishes are among the earliest vertebrates, enjoying a special consideration and place in human civilization from times immemorial. Fishes have a distinct place in the ancestry of man. Growth in knowledge of fishes has resulted from man’s lasting curiosity about the nature and from his need for information concerning species used for commerce and recreation (Lagler etal., 1962). In India, fishes are distributed in different types of habitats. The abundance of marine and Inland waters may be attributed to the wealth of fish fauna which is evident from the remarks of Jhingran (1975) that, “ Potentially the vast and varied Inland fishery resources of India are one of the richest in the world.” It therefore, requires extensive research as it would provide a rich source of fish-food. The aquatic environment of freshwater encompasses a wide variety of features, virtually all of which influence the maintenance of homeostasis, essential for growth and reproduction of fishes. It is important that the conditions under which they thrive provide environmental parameters suitable for all of the requirements of the particular species. The state of Jammu and Kashmir is rich in natural freshwater lakes and rivers which due to their rich Ichthyofauna has attracted the attention of large number of Zoologists beginning with Heckel (1938), who for the first time described sixteen species of fishes including SchizothoracinaeDigital copy of ThesisUniversity of Kashmi

Software Reliability Growth Models from the Perspective of Learning Effects and Change-Point.

Increased attention towards reliability of software systems has led to the thorough analysis of the process of reliability growth for prediction and assessment of software reliability in the testing or debugging phase. With many frameworks available in terms of the underlying probability distributions like Poisson process, Non-Homogeneous Poisson Process (NHPP), Weibull, etc, many researchers have developed models using the Non-Homogeneous Poisson Process (NHPP) analytical framework. The behavior of interest, usually, is S-shaped or exponential shaped. S-shaped behavior could relate more closely to the human learning. The need to develop different models stems from the fact that nature of the underlying environment, learning effect acquisition during testing, resource allocations, application and the failure data itself vary. There is no universal model that fits everywhere to be called an Oracle. Learning effects that stem from the experiences of the testing or debugging staff have been considered for the growth of reliability. Learning varies over time and this asserts need for conduct of more research for study of learning effects.Digital copy of ThesisUniversity of Kashmi

Scientific validation of antidiabetic potentials of Artemisia amygdalina and Gentiana kurroo in diabetic rats.

Diabetes is prevalent in all parts of the world, rapidly increasing worldwide and is quite alarming in most of the developing countries including India. Besides being costly, the current hypoglycemic agents are associated with adverse effects. So in order to identify complementary and alternative approaches to existing medications, we studied anti-diabetic potential of Artemisia amygdalina Decne and Gentiana kuroo Royle. Petroleum ether, ethyl acetate, methanolic and hydroethanolic extracts of Artemisia amygdalina and Gentiana kuroo were screened for their antidiabetic potential in diabetic rats. The antidiabetic effect of extracts was assessed by checking the biochemical, physiological and histopathological parameters in diabetic rats.Digital copy of ThesisUniversity of Kashmi

The Power and Promise of Ecofeminism: A Study of the Selected Novels of Margaret Atwood and Alice Walker.

Ecofeminism reflects an affinity between the domination of nature and subjugation of women in history, experience, religion, literature, ethics and epistemology. The word ‗ecofeminism‘ coined by the French feminist, Francoise D Eaubonne in 1974, gained currency both with academicians and activists. Drawing attention to the current ecological crisis compounded by overpopulation, overconsumption and pollution alongside the age old patriarchal oppression of women, Eaubonne called on feminists to wed their cause to that of the environment and lead the way into a post - patriarchal, genuinely humanist and ecologically sustainable future. Ynestra King, the coordinator of the first ecofeminist conference ‗Women and Life on Earth. Ecofeminism is a multi-elemental cultural perspective about Nature and sub ordination of people especially women. Referred to as the third wave of feminism, ecofeminism represents a blend of ecology, feminism and women‘s spirituality.Digital copy of Thesis.University of Kashmir

The concept of information theory originated when an attempt was made to create a theoretical model for the transmission of information theory of various kinds. Information theory is a branch of mathematical theory of probability and is applied in wide variety of fields: communication theory, thermodynamics, econometrics, operation research and psychology etc. The development presented here have represented a step towards generalizing various measures of information, their characterization, application in coding theory and inference.Digital copy of Thesis.University of Kashmir

Personality profiles, emotional maturity and parental acceptance/rejection of children of working and non-working mothers.

The family is regarded as one of the primary group of society concerned with face to face relationship. A child receives his earliest education in his family. It is here that his basic ideas, ideals as well as many attitudes towards himself and his associates are initiated which determine his later adjustment to school and other out of home situations. The attitudes, economic status, behavioural experiences of his/her parents and family environment, all influence the child’s behaviour both directly and indirectly. Woman as a mother has a great role to play in the development of her children. The mother’s interaction with the child has a profound impact on the development of child. In the absence of mother a child feels lonely, insecure and this adversely affects not only the initial activities of the child but also the social and personal development of the child. A mother has more opportunities than the father to influence the child’s growth and behaviour. However it is obvious that when mother enters the employment market their children face crisis from their early age, because they are then usually reared by servants. They cannot take proper care of these children as their mothers can. So, they face hardships in terms of emotional support and rearing. Working Mothers usually place their children in childcare, which results less attention & instruction. It may have significant cognitive effects later in child hood. It has also been found that working mothers had a negative impact on their children, because after work they are sometimes too tired to interact with their children (Reynolds et al., 2003).Digital copy of Ph.D thesis.University of Kashmir

Water is a necessity for all living beings, without it there would be no life. Life originated in water and the ultimate basis of it, the protoplasm, is a colloidal solution of complex organic molecules in a watery medium (70 to 90% of water). Most of the biological phenomena take place in water medium. Moreover, wherever water exists in nature it always holds life. So the study of a water body is the study of life as well. Water is essential at all levels of life, cellular to ecosystem and it stands as the key substance for the existence and continuity of life through different cyclic process in nature; it plays the central role in mediating global scale ecosystem processes, linking atmosphere, lithosphere, and biosphere, by moving substances among them, and enabling chemical reactions to occur. Humans depend on this resource for all their needs of existence and survival. Nature has an innate mechanism to maintain its purity after every natural use, but unables to do so at the rate at which humans add dirt to it. Nature does not know how to deal with several toxins and pollutants that are flowing from industrial and other wastes. Therefore, humans are bound to monitor the impact of this activity on natural freshwaters continuously. The study on Bacterial diversity of Dal lake with particular reference to Pathogenic bacteria was carried out from April 2010 to March 2012 .The study area (Dal lake; latitude 340 07′ N, longitude 740 52′ E, altitude 1583 m) selected for this work is a multi-basined lake with many inlets and outlets, so an extensive network of sixteen sites with different altitudes and geographical co-ordinates viz., Hazratbal open, Hazratbal littoral, Nigeen open, Nigeen littoral, Gagribal open, Gagribal littoral, Nishat open, Near Centeur, Boathall nallah-I, Boathall nallah-II, Tailbal nallah-I, Tailbal nallah-II, Dal lock Gate-I, Dal lock gate-II, Pokhribal nallah-I and Pokhribal nallah-II were selected. Among the selected sites eight (8) sites were selected in the four basins, four (4) were selected from two inlets and four (4) were selected from two outlets. These sites selected included microhabitats from both littoral zones as well as limnetic zones.Digital copy of Ph.D thesis.University of Kashmir
