Abstract 
Jammu and Kashmir 190 006, India; PrFe0.7Ni0.3O3 thin films (thickness ~ 200 nm) were 
prepared by pulsed laser ablation technique on LaAlO3 substrate. These films were irradiated 
with 200 MeV Ag
15+
 ions at various fluencies, ranging from 1 × 10
11
 to 1 × 10
12
 ions/cm
2
. 
These irradiated thin films were characterized by using X-ray diffraction, dc conductivity, dc 
magnetization and atomic force microscopy. These films exhibit orthorhombic structure and 
retain it even after irradiations. The crystallite size (110–137 nm), micro strain (1.48 × 10
−2
–
1.75 × 10
−2
 line
−2
 m
−4
) and dislocation density (79.7 × 10
14
–53.2 × 10
14
 line/m
2
) vary with ion 
fluencies. An enhancement in resistivity at certain fluence and then a decrease in its value 
(0.22175–0.21813 Ω cm) are seen. A drastic change in observed magnetism after ion irradiation 
is seen. With ion irradiation, an increase in surface roughness, due to the formation of hillocks 
and other factors, is observed. Destruction of magnetic domains after irradiation can also be 
visualized with magnetic force microscopy and is in close agreement with magnetization data. 
The impact on various physical properties in these thin films after irradiation indicates a 
distortion in the lattice structure and consequently on single-particle band width caused by 
stress-induced defects.

Abstract 
An 8 weeks feeding trial was conducted to determine the dietary methionine requirement of 
fingerling Indian catfish, Heteropneustes fossilis (6.08 +/- 0.95cm; 4.33 +/- 0.52g). Six 
isonitrogenous (40%) and isoenergetic (17.90kJg(-1) GE) amino acid test diets were 
formulated with gradation of 0.25g 100g(-1)containing graded levels of (L)-methionine (0.30, 
0.55, 0.80, 1.05, 1.30 and 1.55g 100g(-1), dry diet) with 0.40g 100g(-1) constant level of 
cystine. Twenty fish were stocked in triplicate groups, in 75-L circular trough with continuous 
flow-through system and fed experimental diets at 4% BW/day twice daily, at 08:00 and 
18:00hours. Maximum live weight gain (296%), best feed conversion ratio (1.56) and protein 
efficiency ratio (1.60) were occurred at 1.05g 100g(-1) methionine, beyond which they 
showed declining tendency. However, quadratic regression analysis of weight gain, feed 
conversion ratio (FCR), protein efficiency ratio (PER) and body protein deposition (BPD) data 
indicated requirement for methionine at 1.15, 1.08, 1.06 and 1.05g 100g(-1) of dry diet 
respectively. Significantly (P<0.05), higher whole body protein content, minimum moisture 
and intermediate fat contents were recorded at 1.05g 100g(-1) dietary methionine level. Ash 
content remained insignificantly (P>0.05) low among all the treatments, excepting at diet I 
and diet II. Body protein deposition was also found to be significantly (P<0.05) higher at 1.05g 
100g(-1) methionine level. Best somatic and haematological indices values were also 
obtained at the requirement level. Based on above results, it is recommended that the diet 
for young H. fossilis should contain methionine at 1.09g 100g(-1) dry diet, corresponding to 
2.73g 100g(-1) dietary protein with 0.40g 100g(1) cystine concentration for optimum growth 
and efficient feed utilization. Thus, the total sulphur amino acid requirement of H. fossilis 
would be (1.09+0.40) 1.49g 100g(-1) of dry diet, corresponding to 3.73g 100g(-1) of dietary 
protein.

Abstract 
Monitoring the spatiotemporal changes in wetlands and assessing their causal factors is 
critical for developing robust strategies for the conservation and restoration of these 
ecologically important ecosystems. In this study, the spatiotemporal changes in the land 
cover system within a Himalayan wetland and its catchment were assessed and correlated 
using a time series of satellite, historical, and field data. Significant changes in the spatial 
extent, water depth, and the land system of the Hokersar wetland were observed from the 
spatiotemporal analysis of the data from 1969 to 2008. The wetland area has shrunk from 
18.75 km2 in 1969 to 13 km2 in 2008 with drastic reduction in the water depth of the wetland. 
The marshy lands, habitat of the migratory birds, have shrunk from 16.3 km2 in 1969 to 
5.62 km2 in 2008 and have been colonized by various other land cover types. The land system 
and water extent changes within the wetland were related to the spatiotemporal changes in 
the land cover and hydrometeorological variables at the catchment scale. Significant changes 
in the forest cover (88.33–55.78 km2), settlement (4.63–15.35 km2), and water bodies (1.75–
0.51 km2) were observed in the catchment. It is concluded that the urbanization, 
deforestation, changes in the hydrologic and climatic conditions, and other land system 
changes observed in the catchment are the main causes responsible for the depleting 
wetland extent, water depth, and biodiversity by adversely influencing the hydrologic erosion 
and other land surface processes in the catchment. All these causes and effects are manifest 
in the form of deterioration of the water quality, water quantity, the biodiversity changes, 
and the decreasing migratory bird population in the wetland.

Abstract 
A study was carried out in district Samba of Western Himalayan province of Jammu and 
Kashmir of India. The data were collected in an interview schedule in personal interview with 
180 household heads. The association between the level of fuelwood consumption 
(low versus high consumption) and different factors, each individually, was investigated using 
chi-square test of association at 0.001 level of significance. It was found that out of 25 socio-
economic, biophysical and alternate fuel factors, 15 factors (each individually) significantly 
influenced the domestic fuelwood consumption. Logistic regression models of alternate fuel 
use, social, economic and biophysical factors were developed to identify key variables 
influencing fuelwood consumption levels within each respective category. A composite 
model was also developed to identify key factors when all variables in all the pre-said 
categories were considered simultaneously. Surprisingly, in contrast to expectation the 
model with alternate fuel use did not provide a good fit. The biophysical model also did not 
provide a good fit. The economic and composite models were the same with equal level of 
accuracy of predication. This implies that economic aspects, rather than the availability of 
alternate fuels, dominate fuelwood consumption levels of rural households. Strategies to 
increase the exposure of the head of household to outside world needs to formulated to 
reduce the domestic fuelwood consumption levels of alternate fuels is not a necessary 
condition to decrease household level domestic fuelwood consumption. Economic factors 
needs to be considered in des. Households nearer to state forests are to be educated about 
efficient use of fuelwood and be encouraged to intensify use of Liquified Petroleum Gas. The 
wider implications of study are: the availability igning strategies to reduce fuelwood 
consumption. Increased employment opportunities would increase the opportunity cost of 
fuelwood collection and this would reduce its use.

Abstract 
Wavelet analysis is a powerful tool that is already in use throughout science and engineering. 
The versatility and attractiveness of the wavelet approach lie in its decomposition properties, 
principally its time scale localization. The applications of wavelet analysis are systematically 
increasing in the Meteorology. In the present paper, we study correlation between time series 
of five meteorological parameters of Jammu and Kashmir for the period 1995-2010 using 
wavelet methods. We also obtain the wavelet spectrum and compute the cross-correlation 
coefficient between the two same meteorological parameters, of the two different locations 
using statistical methods. In general, for all pairs of stations the time series for temperature 
and rainfall data were adjudged to be highly correlated, whereas wind speed, pressure and 
relative humidity comparatively less correlated.
