    Time Latency-Centric Signal Processing: A Perspective of Smart Manufacturing

    Abstract: Smart manufacturing employs embedded systems such as CNC machine tools, programable logic controllers, automated guided vehicles, robots, digital measuring instruments, cyberphysical systems, and digital twins. These systems collectively perform high-level cognitive tasks (monitoring, understanding, deciding, and adapting) by making sense of sensor signals. When sensor signals are exchanged through the abovementioned embedded systems, a phenomenon called time latency or delay occurs. As a result, the signal at its origin (e.g., machine tools) and signal received at the receiver end (e.g., digital twin) differ. The time and frequency domain-based conventional signal processing cannot adequately address the delay-centric issues. Instead, these issues can be addressed by the delay domain, as suggested in the literature. Based on this consideration, this study first processes arbitrary signals in time, frequency, and delay domains and elucidates the significance of delay domain over time and frequency domains. Afterward, real-life signals collected while machining different materials are analyzed using frequency and delay domains to reconfirm its (the delay domain’s) significance in real-life settings. In both cases, it is found that the delay domain is more informative and reliable than the time and frequency domains when the delay is unavoidable. Moreover, the delay domain can act as a signature of a machining situation, distinguishing it (the situation) from others. Therefore, computational arrangements enabling delay domain-based signal processing must be enacted to effectively functionalize the smart manufacturing-centric embedded systems.journal articl

    Developing sensor signal-based digital twins for intelligent machine tools

    Digital twins can assist machine tools in performing their monitoring and troubleshooting tasks autonomously from the context of smart manufacturing. For this, a special type of twin denoted as sensor signal-based twin must be constructed and adapted into the cyber-physical systems. The twin must (1) machine-learn the required knowledge from the historical sensor signal datasets, (2) seamlessly interact with the real-time sensor signals, (3) handle the semantically annotated datasets stored in clouds, and (4) accommodate the data transmission delay. The development of such twins has not yet been studied in detail. This study fills this gap by addressing sensor signal-based digital twin development for intelligent machine tools. Two computerized systems denoted as Digital Twin Construction System (DTCS) and Digital Twin Adaptation System (DTAS) are proposed to construct and adapt the twin, respectively. The modular architectures of the proposed DTCS and DTAS are presented in detail. The real-time responses and delay-related computational arrangements are also elucidated for both systems. The systems are also developed using a Java™-based platform. Milling torque signals are used as an example to demonstrate the efficacy of DTCS and DTAS.     Predicting increase of demand for public buses in university students > daily life needs: Case Study Based on a City in Japan

    Accessibility and economic sustainability of public bus services (PBS) have been in a continuous decline in Japan’s countryside. Rural cities also suffer from population transformation toward industrial centers experiencing rapid economic growth. In the present study, we reviewed the current demand status of PBS in Kitami, a rural city in Japan that hosts a national university. The investigation was performed by examining students’ daily lives using a survey to collect data representing a portion of the population. The objective was to predict the change in demand rate for PBS concerning the necessities of everyday life from the perspective of university students as potential users of PBS. Intuitively, decision-makers at every level display a distinct prejudice toward alternatives that intend to change the long-lasting status quo, hence in the question sequence, a two-step verification probe was used to reveal a person’s actual perceived opinion. Accordingly, the respondents’ initial demand rate for PBS was around 60%; however, this score increased to 71% in the secondary confirmation. Afterward, using machine learning-based prediction methods, we could predict this demand at over 90% of F-measure, with the most reliable and stable prediction method reaching 80% by other daily life indicators’ weight. Finally, we supplied thorough evidence for our approach’s usability by collecting and processing the data’s right set regarding this study’s objective. This method’s highlighted outcomes would help to reduce the local governments’ and relevant initiatives’ adaptability time to demands and improve decision-making flexibility.journal articl

    This report summarizes the snow profile observation in Iwamizawa (March 5, 2021). Observation data of snowfall and maximum snow depth at JMA Iwamizawa meteorological station on 2020/2021 winter reached a level comparable to the highest record (2011/2012 winter). Since 2012, the author has been observing snow profile in Iwamizawa every year. The results of 2021, snow depth was 181cm and snow water equivalent was 702mm in the site. Compared to 2011/2012 winter, granular snow was observed in many layers this season. However, for the snow depth and snow water equivalents showed almost the same values.journal articl

    CLARIFICATION OF A RIVER ICE JAM PHENOMENON IN THE TOKORO RIVER IN MARCH 2018

    本研究は,2018年3月に北海道の常呂川で発生したアイスジャム現象を明らかにすることを目的とした.気象,水位データとともに,定点カメラによる動画撮影,ドローンによる撮影,アイスジャム発生後の河氷サイズ計測,痕跡水位を計測し,現象解明を試みた.本研究により以下のことが明らかとなった.アイスジャム現象により,水位は2時間で3.1mまで急速に上昇した.河川の氷の大きさは、アイスジャム発生地点付近では大きく、上流側では小さい.定点カメラより,アイスジャム発生前後の河氷の流下速度が最大3.5m/sと分かった.流量増加に伴い多くの水が河氷とともに流下し,河道内の堆積しやすい箇所に河氷が詰まり,流下が阻害され水位上昇する.This study aimed to clarify the situation of a river ice jam occurred on the Tokoro river in Hokkaido. We carried out water level observation, video and aerial photography, and also visually monitored the river ice area. The phenomenon of ice jam became clear by this observation. The water level rapidly increased to 3.1 m in 2 hours due to the ice jam phenomenon. River ice size is large near ice jam occurrence point. And this size is small at an upstream point more distant than an ice jam occurrence point. River ice velocity before and after the occurrence of the ice jam was calculated by PIV analysis. The speed of river ice flow before and after the ice jam was determined by CCTV cameras. The maximum velocity of the river ice is 3.5 m/s. As the flow rate increases, more water flows downstream with the ice, which clogs the river channel where it tends to accumulate, blocking the flow and causing the water level to rise.journal articl

    Temperature effects on the C–H symmetric stretching vibrational frequencies of guest hydrocarbon molecules in 512, 51262 and 51264 cages of sI and sII clathrate hydrates

    C–H symmetric stretching vibrational frequencies of CH4, C2H4 and C2H6 molecules encapsulated in 512, 51262 and 51264 cages of structures I (sI) and II (sII) clathrate hydrates measured by Raman spectroscopy in the temperature range of 93–183 K was analysed. The slopes of the symmetric stretch vibrational frequencies under changing temperatures (Δv/ΔT) for CH4, C2H4 and C2H6 molecules encapsulated in sII 51264 cages were smaller than those for molecules in sI 51262 cages, although sI 51262 cages are smaller than sII 51264 cages. We compared the results of Δv/ΔT in this study with the geometrical properties of each host water cage, and these comparisons suggest that the geometry of host water cages affects Δv/ΔT.journal articl
