EXAMINATION OF EXTERNAL FORCE EVALUATION METHOD ON RIVER STRUCTURES CONSIREDERING RIVER ICE COLLISION IN THE TIDAL ZONE
In snowy cold region, many concrete structures in rivers are degraded by combination of freezing and salt damage. In some cases, collision of river ice cause additional damages on these structures. We aim to develop methods to evaluate damage on concrete sheet piles set in tidal zone caused by river ice collision in long term. First, we analyzed relation between river ice movement, tide and temperature. Following current was distinguished in river ice movement direction. River ice freezing was advanced when temperature was low and tide was lower than TP 0.0m. Next, we estimated river ice collision force with ice image analysis and river ice thickness estimation. Machining Phenomenon Twin Construction for Industry 4.0: A Case of Surface Roughness
Industry 4.0 requires phenomenon twins to functionalize the relevant systems (e.g.,
cyber-physical systems). A phenomenon twin means a computable virtual abstraction of a real
phenomenon. In order to systematize the construction process of a phenomenon twin, this study
proposes a system defined as the phenomenon twin construction system. It consists of three
components, namely the input, processing, and output components. Among these components,
the processing component is the most critical one that digitally models, simulates, and validates a given
phenomenon extracting information from the input component. What kind of modeling, simulation,
and validation approaches should be used while constructing the processing component for a given
phenomenon is a research question. This study answers this question using the case of surface
roughness—a complex phenomenon associated with all material removal processes. Accordingly,
this study shows that for modeling the surface roughness of a machined surface, the approach called
semantic modeling is more eective than the conventional approach called the Markov chain. It is
also found that to validate whether or not a simulated surface roughness resembles the expected
roughness, the outcomes of the possibility distribution-based computing and DNA-based computing
are more eective than the outcomes of a conventional computing wherein the arithmetic mean
height of surface roughness is calculated. Thus, apart from the conventional computing approaches,
the leading edge computational intelligence-based approaches can digitize manufacturing processes

Pore Filling Effect of Forced Carbonation Reactions Using Carbon Dioxide Nanobubbles
Various methods for repairing and modifying concrete surfaces have been proposed and
applied to improve the durability of existing concrete structures. Surface modification through
forced carbonation is a method of densification that forms calcium carbonate in the pores on the
surface of concrete to improve its durability. In this study, to evaluate the applicability of this surface
modification method to existing buildings, a series of experiments was conducted in which mortar
specimens were repeatedly immersed in a carbon dioxide nanobubble aqueous solution. By evaluating
the weight change and absorption rate, it was determined that the higher the water/cement ratio of
the mortar specimen, the higher the pore filling effect owing to immersion in the carbon dioxide
nanobubble aqueous solution. In addition, the effect of clogged pores generated by the precipitation
of calcium carbonate was confirmed, and it was found that the higher the water/cement ratio of the
mortar specimen, the higher the pore filling effect due to clogging. We believe that our findings

What is knowledge in Industry 4.0?
Industry 4.0 relevant systems (eg, cyber-physical systems, digital twins, and
alike) need digitized knowledge to function. Before digitizing knowledge, a fundamental
question arises: What is knowledge? In order to answer this question,
this study first reviews the definitions of knowledge found in the extant literature
of epistemology, engineering design, manufacturing, organization science,
information science, and education science. Since the definitions reported so far
are not succinct and suffer circularity, this study overcomes this by introducing
a three-element-based definition of knowledge—a piece knowledge consists
of three elements defined as claim, provenance, and inference. This results
in four types of knowledge defined as definitional, deductive, inductive, and
creative knowledge, and each type of knowledge is again divided into some
categories. Some real-life scenarios relevant to engineering design and manufacturing
are used to clarify the proposed knowledge types/categories; the relevant
pieces of knowledge are represented by knowledge graphs (concept maps) for
the sake of digitization. The myriad proximal and distal relationships between
knowledge and other relevant entities (human/machine learning, logical inferences,
experimental data, analytical results, creative thinking, and cognitive
reflections) become succinct and transparent due to the proposed definition of

Antarctic Radiosonde Observations Reduce Uncertainties and Errors in Reanalyses and Forecasts over the Southern Ocean: An Extreme Cyclone Case
Cyclones with strong winds can make the Southern Ocean and the Antarctic a dangerous environment. Accurate
weather forecasts are essential for safe shipping in the Southern Ocean and observational and logistical operations at
Antarctic research stations. This study investigated the impact of additional radiosonde observations from Research Vessel
"Shirase" over the Southern Ocean and Dome Fuji Station in Antarctica on reanalysis data and forecast experiments using
an ensemble data assimilation system comprising the Atmospheric General Circulation Model for the Earth Simulator and
the Local Ensemble Transform Kalman Filter Experimental Ensemble Reanalysis, version 2. A 63-member ensemble
forecast experiment was conducted focusing on an unusually strong Antarctic cyclonic event. Reanalysis data with
(observing system experiment) and without (control) additional radiosonde data were used as initial values. The observing
system experiment correctly captured the central pressure of the cyclone, which led to the reliable prediction of the strong
winds and moisture transport near the coast. Conversely, the control experiment predicted lower wind speeds because it
failed to forecast the central pressure of the cyclone adequately. Differences were found in cyclone predictions of
operational forecast systems with and without assimilation of radiosonde observations from Dome Fuji Station.journal articl
Methodology for water content of snow using salinity and melting point depression
極地における海氷面上の熱収支の把握は重要課題である.海氷上の積雪は,海水のしみ上がりにより塩分を有し,凝固点降下により 0℃以下でも液体層を含むことがある.原理的には,塩を含む積雪の含水率測定に,熱量計による直接測定はそもそも不要であり,ぬれ雪の雪温と融解水の塩分からモル凝固点降下の式を用いて含水率は求まる.本研究では,自然積雪のざらめ雪に NaCl を混ぜた試料を用いて,熱量式による含水率の直接測定値に比熱補正を施す方法,および雪温,塩分とモル凝固点降下式を用いた方法について,野外実験を通して,塩を含む積雪の含水率測定法に関する比較・考察を行なった.journal articl
Investigations of two avalanches occurred in Hokkaido in early March, 2020 – An avalanche at Mt. Nitonupuri and an avalanche at Mt. Sokipdake –
2019 年-2020 年冬期は北海道では少雪にもかかわらず雪崩事故が多発した.雪氷災害調査チームは,北海道で発生する主要な雪崩事故ついて今冬期も発生の都度現地調査を行ってきた.本稿ではそのうち 3 月に発生した 2 つの雪崩の調査報告を行う.3 月 5 日ニセコニトヌプリ西斜面で発生した雪崩の調査では,降雪結晶による弱層が 2 層見られたが,そのうち深い方の弱層が雪崩の原因となったと推定された.3 月 7 日,武佐岳北西のソーキップ岳南斜面で発生した雪崩では,降雪結晶による弱層が 2 層見られ,いずれかが雪崩の原因であった.journal articl
