The impact of quercetin on cisplatin-induced clastogenesis and apoptosis in murine marrow cells.
The aim of the present investigation is to determine whether the quercetin in combination with cisplatin can ameliorate cisplatin-induced clastogenesis and apoptosis in the bone marrow cells of mice. The scoring of chromosomal aberrations, micronuclei and mitotic activity were undertaken in the current study as markers of clastogenicity. Apoptosis was analysed by the Annexin V-propidium iodide assay and the occurrence of a hypodiploid DNA peak. Oxidative stress markers such as bone marrow lipid peroxidation and reduced glutathione were assessed as a possible mechanism underlying this amelioration. Quercetin was neither clastogenic nor apoptogenic in mice at doses equivalent to 50 or 100 mg/kg for 2 days. Pre-treatment of mice with quercetin significantly reduced cisplatin-induced clastogenesis and apoptosis in the bone marrow cells and these effects were dose and time dependent. Prior administration of quercetin ahead of cisplatin challenge ameliorated oxidative stress markers. Overall, this study provides for the first time that quercetin has a protective role in the abatement of cisplatin-induced clastogenesis and apoptosis in the bone marrow cells of mice that resides, at least in part, in its antioxidant effects. Therefore, quercetin can be a good candidate to decrease the deleterious effects of cisplatin in the bone marrow cells of cancer patients treated with this drug
Gastric antiulcer, antisecretory and cytoprotective properties of celery (Apium graveolens) in rats
In the present investigation, an ethanol extract of celery [Apium graveolens L. (Apiaceae/Umbelliferae)], at doses of 250 and 500 mg/kg body weight, was evaluated for antigastric ulcer activity using various experimental gastric ulcer models in rats. Ulcers were induced by indomethacin, cytodestructive agents (80% ethanol, 0.2 M NaOH and 25% NaCl) and cold restraint stress. Gastric secretory studies were undertaken by using pylorus ligation (Shay rat model). In addition to gastric wall mucus (GWM), non-protein sulfhydryl (NP-SH) and malondialdehyde (MDA) were also estimated in gastric tissues after 80% ethanol treatment. Pretreatment of celery extract produced dose-dependent reduction in all experimentally induced gastric lesions. Ethanol ( 80%) decreased the levels of GWM, NP-SH and increase in MDA concentration in gastric tissue. Celery extract showed the ability to significantly replenish the ethanol-induced depleted levels of GWM and gastric mucosal NP-SH. The gastric mucosal MDA level was also significantly lowered in extract pretreated rats. The celery extract showed stomach protection against the models used for ulcerogenesis. Results were further confirmed by using histopathological assessment. The phytochemical screening showed the presence of various chemical constituents such as flavonoids, tannins, volatile oils, alkaloids, sterols and/or triterpenes. Acute toxicity test revealed no deleterious or toxic symptoms or mortality over a period of 14 days. However, the LD50 was found to be 7.55 g/kg, and showed a large margin of safety. The results suggest that Apium graveolens extract significantly protects the gastric mucosa and suppresses the basal gastric secretion in rats, possibly through its antioxidant potential
Stereoselective HPLC analysis of tertatolol in rat plasma using macrocyclic antibiotic chiral stationary phase
Enantiomeric resolution of teratolol was achieved on a vancomycin macrocyclic antibiotic chiral stationary phase known as Chirobiotic V with UV detection set at 220 nm. The polar ionic mobile phase (PIM) consisted of methanol-glacial acetic acid-triethylamine (100:0.01:0.015, v/v/v) has been used at a flow rate of 0.8 ml min(-1). The calibration curves in plasma were linear over the range of 5-500 ng ml(-1) for each enantiomer with detection limit of 2 ng ml(-1). The proposed method was validated in compliance with the international conference on harmonization (ICH) guidelines. The developed method applied for the trace analyses of tertatolol enantiomers in plasma and for the pharmacokinetic study of tertatolol enantiomers in rat plasma. The assay proved to be suitable for therapeutic drug monitoring and chiral quality control for tertatolol formulations by HPLC. Chirality, 2010. © 2010 Wiley-Liss, Inc
The Shaky Ladder Hyperplane-Defined Functions and classical Dynamic problems
To improve the understanding of the GA in dynamic environments we explore a set of test problems,
the shaky ladder hyper-defined functions (sl-hdf), and extend these functions to create versions that
are equivalent to many classical dynamic problems. We do this by constraining the space of all slhdfs
to create representations of these classical functions. We have examined three classical problems, and compared sl-hdf versions of these problems with their standard representations. These results show that the sl-hdfs are representative of a larger class of problems, and can represent a larger class of test suite. Previous results on sl-hdf showed that GA performance is best in the Defined Cliffs variant of the sl-hdf. We build upon these results to improve GA performance in several classes of real world dynamic problems by modifying the problem representation. These results lend insight into dynamic problems where the GA will perform well
Prevalence of dental caries Among Female Patients Attending Dental Hygiene Clinics,Riyadh
Three hundred and twenty eight female patients age ranging from (15-60Years) were examined in the dental hygiene clinics in college of dentistry for caries and oral hygiene status. The WHO criteria were utilized for the diagnosis of dental caries with the addition of Bite wing radio graph. Oral hygiene was determined by summing of average plaque scores and calculus scores. All readings were confirmed by the two examiners. sample was divided into three age groups; first group aged (15-25 years) consisted of 186(56.7%) second group(26-45 years)consisted of 90(27.4%) females and the third group of 46-60years 52 (15.9%) females. A very high means DMFT scores and its component various age groups. No patient had good oral hygiene in any of the three age groups .There was no statically significant difference (p>0.05) between oral health hygiene groups in the term of mean DMFT score and its components. the female patients visiting the dental hygiene very high caries experience, and poor oral hygiene status.Pakistan Medical and Dental Counci
Comparative study of the flavonoids of some Verbena species cultivated in Egypt by using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with ultraviolet
Verbena rigida L., Verbena tenera Spreng. and Verbena venosa L. were investigated for their flavonoid content. Analysis was carried out by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to diode array UV detection (LC–UV), using different techniques, also using post-column addition of shift reagents, afforded precise structural information about the position of the free hydroxyl groups in the flavonoid nucleus. LC–MS using atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) in the positive mode provided the molecular weight, the number of hydroxyl groups, the number of sugars and an idea about the substitution pattern of the flavonoid. On-line UV and MS data demonstrated the presence of orientin, vitexin, isovitexin, luteolin, luteolin 7-O-glucoside, apigenin 7-O-glucoside in addition to luteolin, chryseriol and apigenin aglycones in the three Verbena species with different concentrations. Quantitative determination of flavonoid content revealed the presence of 69.84 mg/g dry sample, 88.26 mg/g dry sample and 85.82 mg/g dry sample total flavonoid compounds in V. rigida L., V. tenera Spreng. and V. venosa L., respectively. The method developed for identification is useful for further chromatographic fingerprinting of plant flavonoids

Anne Bradstreet’s Quest for Spiritual Solace
This thesis studies Anne Bradstreet’s quest for spiritual solace during times of hardships after she and her family fled from England to North America. During those adversities, Bradstreet questioned her faith. In all the poems subject of this thesis Bradstreet’s inner struggle between her flesh and spirit can obviously be seen. Bradstreet uses her talent in poetry writing as a means to express her thoughts and fears hoping to find the peace and comfort she needs. Bradstreet was able to get over all those shattering hardships and emerge a better person believing even more strongly than ever that God will reward her patience in the afterlife with better and heavenly blessings. Before her death, the constant disturbing struggle between her flesh and spirit is replaced by serenity and longing for heaven
