    In this paper we describe the design of a zoomable user interfaces (ZUI) that was incorporated in an interactive educational multimedia system , Ranan, which is targeted to native Arab-based speaking children with hearing disabilities, and offers auditory aural rehabilitation training. The ZUI was used to browse & navigate the training materials , and maintain visual effects to tutorials in this system

    Ensemble Classifiers for Dynamic Signature Authentication

    Rapid advances in technology, that made almost everything goes digital have entailed a persistent need for a stronger means of information security. Furthermore, new advanced devices are now available to capture the dynamic of a person’s signature. Therefore, the reliance on the dynamic signature for authenticating entities in secure system became crucial. In this paper, we investigate the problem of dynamic signature verification and recognition using Ensemble of Classifiers, where we used multiple Fisher based probabilistic neural networks as the component classifiers to construct the Ensemble. Two key issues are studied; the first issue is how to construct the Ensemble. The second issue is how to combine the predictions of the component classifiers in order to accomplish the decision-making process. Data sets from SVC dataset have been used to assess the performance of the proposed ensemble of classifiers. Obtained results are very encouraging and show the ability of ensemble classifiers to deal with the tackled problem

    Features Subset Selection for Network Intrusion Detection Mechanism Using Genetic Eigen Vectors

    Network Intrusions are critical issues in computer and network systems. Several intrusion detection approaches be present to resolve these severe problems but the major problem is performance. To increase performance, it is significant to increase the detection rates and reduce false alarm rates in the area of intrusion detection. The recent approaches use Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to project features space to principal feature space and select features corresponding to the highest eigenvalues, but the features corresponding to the highest eigenvalues may not have the optimal sensitivity for the classifier due to ignoring many sensitive features. Instead of using traditional approach of selecting features with the highest eigenvalues such as PCA, we applied a Genetic Algorithm (GA) to search the principal feature space for genetic eigenvectors that offers a subset of features with optimal sensitivity and the highest discriminatory power. Therefore, in this research, a mechanism for optimal features subset selection is proposed to overcome performance issues using PCA, GA and Multilayer Perceptron (MLP). The KDD-cup dataset is used that is a benchmark for evaluating the security detection mechanisms. The MLP is used for classification purpose. The performance of this approach is addresses. Consequently, this method provides optimal intrusion detection mechanism which is capable to minimize amount of features and maximize the detection rate

    Evaluating Chaos-based vs. Conventional Encryption Techniques for C4I System

    With the passage of time and with the dramatic improvements in the field of computers and communications, security gained more importance especially in the real time and critical environments. This has lead to the emergence of various techniques, with diverse approaches to encryption. Each technique has its strengths and weaknesses based on the application area. The selection of a specific encryption technique might not be an easy task due to the many criteria involved. In this article we evaluate chaos-based encryption techniques against the traditional or conventional encryption techniques based on certain criteria using a MCDM (Multi criteria Decision Making) tool. The two techniques are evaluated based on seven essential criteria and sub-criteria. The evaluation has been conducted by information security specialists where they have been given the chance to use both approaches to encryption. Eventually the conclusions are drawn based on the outcomes produced by the incorporated MCDM tool

    Properties of natural pozzolan and its potential utilization in environmental friendly concrete

    In Saudi Arabia, locally available natural pozzolanic material has the potential for use in environmental friendly concrete as a partial cement replacement. Local natural pozzolan was incorporated in concrete as a partial cement replacement to study the effect of replacement level, natural pozzolan fineness and its source. Chemical and physical properties of local natural pozzolan, properties of fresh concrete, compressive strength development, chloride permeability, and porosity of concrete incorporating local natural pozzolanic material as a partial cement replacement is presented. The influence of curing on the properties of concrete containing natural pozzolan and the X-ray diffraction analysis are reported. It was observed that regardless of its different sources, chemical and physical properties of local natural pozzolan are similar and conforms to the requirements of ASTM C 618, Class N. Concrete containing up to 15% natural pozzolan matches with the mix containing 20% fly ash, which is very close to the plain concrete. Higher dosages of this natural pozzolan can be utilized for economical and environmental benefits. This research is the first of its kind that addresses the investigation on Saudi natural pozzolanic material

    RAINFALL INTENSITY-DURATION-FREQUENCY RELATIONSHIP FOR SOME REGIONS IN SAUDI ARABIA

    Intensity-Duration-Frequency (IDF) relationship of rainfall amount is one of the most commonly used tools in water resources engineering for planning designing, and operation of water resources projects, or for various engineering projects against floods. The objective of this research is therefore, to derive IDF relationship of rainfall for two regions in the kingdom. These relationships are useful in the design of urban drainage works, culverts and other hydraulic structures. Two commonly frequency analysis techniques were used to develop the relationship between the rainfall intensity, storm duration, and return periods from rainfall data for two regions in Saudi Arabia. These techniques are: Gumbel and the Log Pearson Type III distribution. In order to do that, rainfall data was obtained for different durations. A set of curves was plotted using the intensity-duration-frequency data to be the basis of the analysis. An equation for calculating rainfall intensity for every region was derived based on the results obtained from the IDF data. The results obtained using Gumbel distribution are slightly higher than the results obtained using the Log Pearson III distribution. In general, the results obtained using the two approaches are very close and have the same trend. Rainfall intensities are drawn from these two methods and the results obtained from that work showed good consistency with what has been done before in some parts of the study area. The chi-squared goodness-of-fit test was used to determine the best fit probability distribution. Further studies are recommended whenever there will be more data to verify the results obtained or updating those IDF curves.Research Center, Faculty of Engineering, King Saud Universit

    Evaluation and performance of repair materials for rehabilitation of concrete structures

    The most common form of rehabilitation for a deteriorated structure is to remove the deteriorated concrete and replace it with a new material, thus increasing the design life of the structure. Good adhesion of a repair material to concrete is of vital importance in the application and performance of concrete repairs. A major factor that influences the durability of the repair is the bond strength between the new material and the substrate. In this investigation, the most common repair materials, produced by international reputed manufactures, available in the local market were selected from cementitious repair mortars and cementitious polymer modified mortars. The performance of these materials were evaluated in terms of compressive strength, tensile strength, bond strength in tension and bond strength in modulus of rupture. © (2011) Trans Tech Publications
