    Evaluation of near-isogenic lines of rice introgressed with submergence tolerance and deep rooting at early growth stage

    Rice varieties that minimise shoot elongation under submergence and provide tolerance for up to two weeks carry SUB1A. Conversely, DRO1 responsible for deep-rooting, helps in water and nutrient acquisition under drought. In this study, we compared the growth of NIL-SUB1, NIL-DRO1, and NIL-SUB1DRO1 with IR64 background for its dual tolerance to submergence, drought, and recovery. Submergence was on 14- and 16-days old seedling for 7 and 10 days and allowed to recover for 7 and 10 days respectively. Drought was also imposed on 14- and 13-days old seedlings for 18 and 29 days followed by 10 days recovery respectively. Submergence and drought adversely affected growth and performance of the genotypes. Compared to IR64, NIL-SUB1DRO1 suppressed shoot elongation during flooding, maintained the function of the leaf photosystem, and under drought conditions, maintained leaf water potential and contributed to increased dry matter weight of shoots and roots. In addition, NIL-SUB1DRO1 exhibited deep rooting, with roots extending into the lower subsurface layers under drought condition. It is suggested that NIL-SUB1 showed potential tolerance to submergence and NIL-DRO1 to drought.     Mountain god culture in the Matsuo district of Shiiba Village, Miyazaki Prefecture

    There are a variety of festivals, rituals, and events for mountain gods throughout the country, and it has been revealed that they have existed since the Jomon period. In this study, we revealed that Kagura and slash-and-burn farming related to mountain gods are still handed down in Shiiba Village, Miyazaki Prefecture, a historic place where cultures such as Kagura and the legend of the fallen people of the Heike family remain. However, Kagura was discontinued in the Matsuo district only, and 21 villages in the Matsuo district were surveyed. Therefore, in this study, we clarified the characteristics of mountain god culture in the Matsuo district by investigating the unique mountain god festival in the Matsuo area, where kagura and slash-and-burn farming related to mountain gods thrive. The results indicated that six villages enshrined a common mountain god, while the other villages enshrined a god of the clan.     An applicable scientific name for the species named as "Azuki-umihebi"

    A single ophichthid specimen collected off Hokota, Ibaraki, Japan in 2022 which was identified as Ophichthus longicorpus Vo and Ho, 2021 is re-examined by molecular and morphological methods. The COI sequence of the paratype of Ophichthus multidentis Hibino et al., 2024 agrees completely with that of the Japanese specimen, and there are no remarkable differences in their morphology, although slight differences in the proportional length of the tail, the position of the dorsal-fin origin and the number of the preopercular pores are recognized. Consequently, the standard Japanese name “Azuki-umihebi”, formerly proposed for O. longicorpus, should be used for O. multidentis. Based on the present study, the combinational diagnosis of O. multidentis is slightly modified as follows: head length 8.0–8.8% TL; tail length 56.8–59.2% TL; dorsal-fin origin behind pectoral-fin tip by 3–4 times the pectoral-fin length; posteriorly of opening of anterior-nostril tube slightly extended; no protrusions along upper lip; SO 1 + 3 ; POM 5 or 6 + 2 (rarely 3 one side); teeth on maxilla in 4 irregular rows or 5 rows anteriorly and 3 irregular rows to 4 rows posteriorly, teeth on vomer in up to 4 rows, teeth on dentary in 4 rows anteriorly, 3 rows posteriorly; body uniformly dark, median fins creamy white except for dark basal pigmentation restricted to ending; 22–30 predorsal and 63–65 preanal lateral-line pores; total vertebrae 162–164, MVF 25-64-163.journal articl

    Hatching rates of naturally spawned Gnathopogon caerulescens eggs on various substrates and sites

    We examined the hatching rates of naturally spawned eggs of Gnathopogon caerulescens, a small cyprinid fish indigenous to Lake Biwa, central Japan. Spawning behavior was observed near the lakeshore, in satellite lakes and a small river flowing into a satellite lake, and the main substrates for the egg deposition were reed roots and stalks, willow roots near lakeshore and satellite lakes, and gravel and moss in the river. Naturally spawned egg batches assessed as 2‒5 days at each site were collected from various substrates over two years, and incubated till hatching in the laboratory. The mean hatching rate for each year was about 50% and no clear difference during each spawning season in the hatching rates was detected in both years. The mean hatching rate in the satellite lakes tended to be lower than the other spawning sites. These results suggest that more than half of naturally spawned eggs die before hatching, and the hatching rate of the eggs in the satellite lakes may be affected by some environments and egg quality due to stress for spawning parents of the higher water temperature.journal articl

    First Japanese record of a deepwater snake eel, Ophichthus tomioi (Anguilliformes, Ophichthidae), from Wakayama, southern Japan

    A single specimen of Ophichthus tomioi McCosker, 2010 (498.1 mm of total length, female) was collected during an ichthyofaunal survey of the rariphotic zone off Kushimoto, Wakayama, southern Japan. It has previously been reported only from deepwaters in the Philippines, Fiji, and the Marquesas Islands. Therefore, it represents the first record from Japanese waters and the northernmost record. Although the present specimen has 1+3 supraorbital pores on the right side (vs. 1+4 on both sides in type series of O. tomioi), it can be regarded as an abnormal condition based on its arrangement. Ophichthus tomioi is similar to Ophichthus aniptocheilos McCosker, 2010 and Ophichthus mystacinus McCosker, 1999 in the position of the opening of posterior nostril, the dark tip of anal fin, and the shape of pectoral fin. However, O. tomioi can be distinguished from O. aniptocheilos by the number of total vertebrae (166–189 vs. 140), and the number of mandibular tooth rows (2 vs. 1), and from O. mystacinus by the position of dorsal-fin origin (near pectoral-fin tip vs. about mid-trunk). The presence or absence of the pigmentation on the upper lip, which was previously included in the key characters for separating O. aniptocheilos from O. tomioi, should be regarded as unavailable.journal articl

    Tetrastigma fruticosum, a new species of Vitaceae from limestone karst in central Laos

    A new species of Tetrastigma, T. fruticosum (Vitaceae), from the limestone karst in Khammouane Province, central Laos, is described. The new species can be distinguished from the previously known species in the genus by a combination of its shrubby habit, absence of tendrils, pedately 5-foliolate leaves (rarely 4, 6, or 7-foliolate) with shallowly emarginated leaflet, and 1-seeded oblong-ellipsoid fruits.
