Detection of snow disturbances in boreal forests using unitemporal airborne lidar data and aerial images
Snow is among the most significant natural disturbance agents in Finland. In silviculture, maps of snow disturbance are needed to recognize severely disturbed forests where the risk of subsequential disturbances, such as insect outbreaks, is high. We investigated the potential of unitemporal airborne lidar (light detection and ranging) data and aerial images to detect snow disturbance at the tree level. We used 81 healthy and 128 snow-disturbed field plots established in a 63 800 ha study area in Eastern Finland. A subset of trees (n = 675) was accurately positioned in the field plots. We carried out individual tree detection (ITD) using airborne lidar data (5 p/m2), and a random forest classifier was used to classify healthy and broken trees. Tree features were extracted from a terrain elevation model, lidar data, and aerial imagery. We compared canopy height model–based (ITDCHM) and point cloud–based (ITDPC) ITD approaches. We explored random forest variable importance scores and evaluated the classification performance by an F1-score and its components (precision and recall). Performance was also evaluated at the plot level to investigate errors associated with the predicted number of broken trees. We achieved F1-scores of 0.66 and 0.85 for the tree- and plot-level classifications, respectively. The variable importance scores showed that elevation above sea level was the most important predictor variable followed by ITD-based features characterizing the neighborhood of trees. The ITDCHM slightly outperformed the ITDPC at the tree level, while they both underestimated the number of broken trees at the plot level. The proposed approach can be carried out alongside lidar-assisted operational forest management inventories provided that a set of positioned broken and healthy trees are available for model training. Since airborne lidar data often have a temporal resolution of several years for the same areas, future research should consider the utilization of other remotely sensed data sources to improve the temporal resolution.202
Sex‐specific associations of the maturation locus vgll3 with exploratory behavior and boldness in Atlantic salmon juveniles
Studies linking genetics, behavior and life history in any species are rare. In Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), age at maturity is a key life-history trait and associates strongly with the vgll3 locus, whereby the vgll3*E allele is linked with younger age at maturity, and higher body condition than the vgll3*L allele. However, the relationship between this genetic variation and behaviors like boldness and exploration which may impact growth and reproductive strategies is poorly understood. The pace-of-life syndrome (POLS) framework provides predictions, whereby heightened exploratory behavior and boldness are predicted in individuals with the early maturation-associated vgll3 genotype (EE). Here, we tested these predictions by investigating the relationship between vgll3 genotypes and exploration and boldness behaviors in 129 juveniles using the novel environment and novel object trials. Our results indicated that contrary to POLS predictions, vgll3*LL fish were bolder and more explorative, suggesting a genotype-level syndrome including several behaviors. Interestingly, clear sex differences were observed in the latency to move in a new environment, with vgll3*EE males, but not females, taking longer to move than their vgll3*LL counterparts. Our results provide further empirical support for recent calls to consider more nuanced explanations than the pace of life theory for integrating behavior into life-history theory.202
We need targeted policy interventions in the EU to save soil carbon
Globally, annual emissions from managed organic soils accounts for up to 5% of all anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Climate-wise management and restoration of degraded organic soils could reduce GHG emissions quickly and at relatively low costs. The European Union (EU) Member States that have large areas of organic soils with high GHG emissions are Sweden, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Poland, Netherlands, and the Baltic countries. To meet the climate targets and objectives of the Paris Agreement the land-use sector is indispensable and mitigation policies targeting organic soils will be needed. The international regulatory framework is broad and quite unspecific. In contrast, the European Union has initiated binding regulation for the land-use sector through the EU Climate Law, the EU LULUCF regulation, and the proposed EU Nature Restoration Law. However, even this regulatory approach is not on track to deliver on its binding ambitions, indicating the need for more effective implementation measures also on organic soils in the EU and its member states. Furthermore, we argue that appropriate policy selection should consider current knowledge regarding the climate impacts of management options of organic soils. Lastly, we need more studies on GHG emissions, and standardized methods for GHG inventories, to resolve uncertainties surrounding the impacts of management to GHG emissions. Successful policy implementation requires more efforts but also improved scientific justification through continuous consideration of climate policy integrity and strengthening of the reliability of GHG inventories.202
Empowering Veterinary Herd Health Management: Insights into Education, Implementation, and Regulation Across Europe
In recent years, integrated veterinary herd health management (VHHM), improving animal health, welfare, food safety, public health, farm management, and economics, has become ever-more important in the European Union due to structural and regulatory advancements. A mixed-methods study analyzed the current state and gaps in VHHM education and training across Europe. Data from 41 European veterinary institutions showed that 83% (n = 34/41) offered VHHM education, either as standalone courses and/or integrated into other subjects. An online survey for veterinarians, primarily working with cattle, poultry, pigs, and small ruminants (75%; n = 86/114), assessed perceived training knowledge gaps and needs. The majority of respondents were unaware of VHHM training programs (69.4%, n = 43/62) or projects (59.6%, n = 59/99) and reported the biggest gaps in VHHM training certification (14%, n = 7/49), followed by soft skills (12%, n = 6/52) and demonstrating VHHM benefits to their clients (9%, n = 5/53). To conclude, while undergraduate VHHM education was generally adequate, enhancing post-graduate certified multi-species training opportunities, incl. soft skills VHHM training were perceived as essential. Our findings also underscored the urgent need for robust economic evaluations of preventive strategies across various animal species to allow veterinarians to better demonstrate VHHM’s direct and indirect benefits to farmers.202
The art of the 'common good': Property and nature values in strategic land-use planning in Finland
Cutting across many biophysical, institutional, cultural, and psychological boundaries, the quest for the ‘common good’ is an enduring legitimation for land-use planning interventions that go beyond statutory planning, even supporting the emergence of new commons. We analyse a body of qualitative and semi-quantitative data from a recent strategic land-use plan process in Southwest Finland, including a series of planning documents and the results of a Q study. We describe how planners, citizens, and stakeholder organisations co-created a regional land-use plan and, focusing on the relationships between the practice of land-use planning and the legal structures of private property, ask how the commons were advanced in relation to private land ownership and how the different interpretations of the common good were reflected in the process. In the studied process, the planners strove to emphasise the commons and the common good by introducing new strategic land-use symbols. However, the emergence of new commons was seen as a threat by many landowners, their advocacy organisations, and regional decision makers. Instead of an unavoidable impasse, we urge that the situation should be seen as a call for novel solutions in the face of the ambitious and spatially explicit nature conservation commitments that increasingly contest the prevailing perceptions of the relationships of nature, property, and the distinct interpretations of common good.202
