Chemistry – A European Journal / Dynamic Covalent Polymer Networks of Silicone Elastomers via Organoborane Lewis‐Pairs

    No full text
Abstract Dynamic covalent polymer networks (DCPNs) have been developed in recent years to offer distinctive mechanical properties and shape responsiveness in covalently cured polymer materials, thereby bestowing them with desirable characteristics such as self‐healing and recyclability. To achieve these desirable properties, dynamic polymers incorporate reversible covalent bonds that enable shape morphing without causing irreversible chemical degradation of the network structure. Lewis pairs (LP), forming coordinate covalent bonds, sometimes referred to as dative covalent bonds, exhibit a broad range of bond dissociation rates and energies, making them inherently interesting for designing DCPNs. However, LPs have been relatively unexplored as polymer building blocks. Here, we present a straightforward approach to prepare LP‐based polymers based on archetypical nitrogen‐borane adducts with an organoborane‐functionalized polydimethylsiloxane combined with commercially available Lewis base (LB) polymers. The dynamic behavior of the organoborane‐functionalized system and LB polymers is investigated, demonstrating tunable reversibility in cured elastomers. The excess of LB facilitates rapid recapture and reformation of the covalent network, contributing to the system's reversible and self‐healing nature. Notably, the system allows easy mixing of different LB polymers, enabling the creation of tuning the system, and hence organoborane‐based LPs are demonstrated to be a promising building block for tunable DCPNs.Austrian Science Fund P 36208‐NB

    No full text
Burnout has become very prominent in the public debate across the global north, show-ing the need for policy to adapt to the changing needs and risks of the modern labour market. Yet this policy development can vary widely, and the Advocacy Coalition Framework can be used to explain these differences by looking at the beliefs of rele-vant actors and what coalitions they form to shape policy accordingly. Comparing the developments that led to the introduction of a prevention law in Germany to the case of Japan, where compensating victims or their bereft families is prevalent, it has become clear that the way burnout is framed in the respective countries shapes which actors participate in the process and which paths are available to them. In Germany, a wider interpretation of the term and the widespread belief that prevention will save costs led to a focus on the political stage focused on how to implement prevention. In Japan, a more narrow definition and a perceived conflict between preventive measures and eco-nomic development caused the emergence of court resolutions on compensation as the main stage, while the political stage has only received more attention comparatively recently.

Most of the processes we encounter in our everyday lifes can be discribed by one or more differential equations. Combining these equations results in so called dynamical systems. Control theory now studies how to influence these systems in such a way, that they exhibit the desired behaviour. For this purpose information about the current state of the system is required. While many of these states can be directly measured via sensors, some, like the temperature inside a blast furnace, would require extensive cost and effort. This motivates the use of observers. They estimate these states based on available measurements and a mathematical model of the underlying process. For systems of ordinary differential equations there exist thoroughly studied and testet observer design strategies. However if the model of the process contains partial differential equations there is no single strategy that fits all cases. Like the controller design also the observer design for such distributed parameter systems can be divided into two big categories. Early-lumping strategies try to first spatially discretize the model and then design an observer for the finite-dimensional system. On the contrary late-lumping strategies aim to directly formulate an observer for the infinite-dimensional system. While early-lumping strategies are already in use in many different cases, late-lumping strategies are rather new and not yet thoroughly studied. In this thesis observers based on both of these strategies will be designed for the laboratory model of a single-mast-crane, which, because of its elastic beam, exhibits mixed finite- and infinite-dimensional characteristics. As early-lumping observers we use both an Extended-Kalman-Filter and a regular Kalman-Filter, while the late-lumping ovserver tries to exploit a special port-Hamiltonian system representation, which is also applicable for a certain class of infinite-dimensional systems. Finally all these observers are tested on the laboratory model, which highlights their advantages and drawbacks.Eingereicht von Moritz LeitnerMasterarbeit Johannes Kepler Universität Linz 202

Journal of Business Economics / Audit fees and audit quality in Austria—a replicatory study in the wake of the EU audit reform

    No full text
Abstract The study investigates the effect of the 2016 EU Audit Reform on audit fees and audit quality in Austria. The reform aimed to enhance audit quality through increased auditor independence and market competition. This study replicates and extends the analysis by Willekens et al. (2019), focusing on the Austrian market and covering a longer period: 2010–2022. The findings indicate that the reform led to a slight decrease in market concentration and a more even distribution of market shares among the Big4 audit firms. The number of auditors in the public interest entities (PIEs) market, however, decreased. Contrary to the trend in the EU identified by Willekens et al. (2019), we observed a significant negative effect of the audit reform indicator on audit fees in Austria following the reform. This is likely due to high competition and specific market conditions. Overall, we found a negative effect of the reform dummy, but the results for the individual reform measures were mixed. Using proxies, such as discretionary accruals and restatements, the study found mixed results regarding the reform’s effect on audit quality. The introduction of a fee cap for non-audit services led to a reduction in these fees, potentially enhancing auditor independence. The study highlights the unique characteristics of the Austrian audit market and suggests that the aims of the EU Audit Reform were partially met in Austria.Oesterreichische Nationalbank 1778

    Der Ausbildungskostenrückersatz im aktuellen Diskurs

    No full text
