    Introduction: The present study investigates the five-year outcomes of hip arthroscopy for cam or pincer-type femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) and associated labral tears in a defined patient population. Methods: Patients who underwent hip arthroscopy for cam or pincer-type arthroscopy femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) and labral tears at our hospital in the past five years were included. All patients who underwent revision—like a total hip arthroplasty (THA), a subsequent hip arthroscopy at another hospital, or had primary osseous diseases—were excluded. Patients were contacted via mail and asked to answer a clinical questionnaire called the “Hip Osteoarthritis Outcome Score” (HOOS) and to indicate whether there was a second surgery like a subsequent arthroscopy or THA. Results: There were 77 hip arthroscopies in 75 patients the last 5 years. A total of 29 patients responded. Those who did not respond were contacted via phone. All in all, we obtained the results of 49 patients (50 hips—29 right, 19 left, and 1 bilateral) who underwent hip arthroscopy over the past five years. The mean age at the time of operation was 41 years. Our results were as follows: 24 hips had an isolated labral tear, 49 hips a combined FAI pathology with cam and/or pincer-type impingement and labral tears, 3 patients had a posttraumatic FAI, and 1 patient suffered from hip chondromatosis, who was subsequently excluded; further, 22 patients (23 procedures) were lost to follow-up. HOOS contains various subscales; only the postoperative result of subscale 1 (symptoms) did not show a statistically significant improvement compared with the preoperative value. All other subscales showed a statistically significant improvement in comparison with the preoperative condition. Five patients (10.2%) still experienced symptoms, so we performed a total hip arthroplasty (THA) as a second surgical procedure. One patient was revised due to chondromatosis. One patient was revised at another center, and another was excluded because of chondromatosis. Conclusions: The five-year follow-up results of hip arthroscopy proved successful outcomes. Hip arthroscopy is an effective treatment for FAI in order to delay primary THA, regaining mobility and range of motion and reducing pain. Longer-term studies with a larger cohort are necessary

    Two new South African endemic bee species of the genus Afroheriades PETERS, 1970 are described: A. fynbosensis KUHLMANN nov.sp. ♀♂ and A. namaquaensis K UHLMANN nov.sp. ♀. An updated key for species identification is presented and additional records of other described Afroheriades species are provided. Morphological characters for a possible subdivision of Afroheriades into subgenera are suggested

    The Human Performance: Computational Methods for the Analysis of Played Classical Piano Music

    Performance brings music to life. It imbues an abstract notated score with expressiveness and character. Listeners perceive music through performance first and foremost, it is what draws us in and what occupies professional performers. Many questions in music computing focalize the performance as primary object of interest: how can machines keep track of and entrain to the passing of musical time? how can they match a performance to its score? or how can they discern and characterize performances? In this thesis, we address these questions for MIDI performances, fine-grained recordings that encode individual notes and their attributes as played by expert pianists. As a prerequisite for most quantitative performance analyses, the performance needs to first be connected to its musical score — to differentiate what is being played from how it is being played. In practice, this means one has to align the performance to the score, the technical solution of which is the focus of the first part of this thesis. We present both classical as well as machine learning-based models for offline symbolic music alignment. The three models presented surpass the technical state of the art in offline alignment, each with strengths in specific special cases. One of those cases is alignment in the presence of anchor points, which we use to produce the largest note-aligned performance and score dataset. We further present two symbolic tracking methods, again both a method classical as well as one based on machine learning. They present a new benchmark for symbolic music tracking and were successfully combined with real-time transcription for audio tracking. The second part considers what can, could, and cannot be derived from such performances once connected to scores in three analyses. First, we connect audio and performance features to listener judgment of the character of performances. Second, we assess and compare computational and expert semantic similarity ratings of terms used to describe piano performances. Lastly, we investigate listeners’ capacity to discern slight changes in expressive features in otherwise real recordings. Our emphasis here lies on ecologically valid concert and studio recording data. Specifically, we design listening tests of modified human performances instead of artificial stimuli, and analyze free text annotations and term associations instead of predefined categorical ratings.Author Silvan David PeterDissertation Johannes Kepler Universität Linz 202

    Applying Mobility Detection and Prediction to Vehicular 5G Networks

    Fifth-generation cellular networks offer new opportunities for the automotive industry, in particular through ultra-reliable machine-type communication. This type of communication is essential for vehicular networks, a promising mobile networking concept aiming to provide connectivity for vehicles that exchange important information about the driving context. Vehicular networks require ubiquitous connectivity with very low latency and ultra-high reliability. In order to maintain connectivity, connections must be handed over from one gNB to another due to the mobility of vehicles and the limited transmission range of radio waves. However, this imposes challenges in practice as signal fluctuations caused by multipath effects can lead to unnecessary handovers and ping-pong effects, resulting in degradation of the network performance. This thesis investigates the application of individual mobility prediction in 5G networks with the objective to improve the handover behaviour. A vector-similarity method is introduced as a prediction method that infers the individual's future locations from previous recorded mobility data by identifying mobility traces that are identical or similar to the sequence of most recent locations. On the basis of this method, two prediction approaches are developed: one based on geographical coordinates and another based on geohash, a geocode system. These approaches are evaluated on two different public datasets of taxi traces. Built on top of the geohash-based mobility prediction approach, two handover schemes are proposed. These are implemented in the Simu5G network simulator and incorporate mobility predictions into handover decisions by permitting or rejecting handovers based on the estimated coverage and proximity of the target gNB along the predicted path. The proposed schemes are evaluated and compared with the default 5G handover scheme in an urban micro cell scenario in Linz, Austria. For this purpose, a co-simulation setup is employed where the network simulator Simu5G is combined with the SUMO traffic simulator. Results show a 49.38 % reduction in unnecessary handovers, primarily achieved by eliminating 80 % of ping-pong effects, along with a 5.56 % decrease in latency and a 2.2 % improvement in downlink throughput.submitted by Christoph Pargfrieder, BScMasterarbeit Johannes Kepler Universität Linz 202

    Die Masterarbeit untersucht die Einführung der Prozentrechnung in der Sekundarstufe I unter Nutzung digitaler Lernmaterialien, insbesondere des dynamischen Prozentbands. Die vorliegende Masterarbeit entstand aus meiner persönlichen Faszination für die Möglichkeiten, die digitale Medien im Unterricht bieten. Mathematikunterricht, insbesondere die Vermittlung abstrakter Konzepte wie der Prozentrechnung, stellt für viele Schülerinnen und Schüler eine Herausforderung dar. Dies hat mich dazu motiviert, nach Wegen zu suchen, wie moderne Technologien den Lernprozess unterstützen und die Motivation der Lernenden steigern können. Digitale Medien spielen eine immer größere Rolle in der schulischen Bildung und können das mathematische Verständnis sowie die Motivation der Schülerinnen und Schüler erheblich beeinflussen. Gerade in der Prozentrechnung, die im Alltag vielfach Anwendung findet, bestehen oft konzeptionelle Verständnisprobleme. Die Nutzung digitaler Medien bietet hier eine Chance, abstrakte Inhalte durch interaktive und visuelle Darstellungen anschaulicher zu machen. Das Ziel dieser Arbeit war es, die Potenziale digitaler Medien zu analysieren und deren Einfluss auf das mathematische Verständnis und die Motivation der Lernenden zu bewerten. Das 5E-Unterrichtsmodell diente als didaktischer Rahmen zur strukturierten Einbettung der Materialien. Es ermöglicht eine schrittweise Heranführung an neue mathematische Konzepte, indem es verschiedene Lernphasen (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate) systematisch integriert. Zur Untersuchung dieser Fragestellung wurde eine Unterrichtseinheit entwickelt, in der das dynamische Prozentband als digitales Werkzeug und ein begleitender Forscherauftrag zur Veranschaulichung prozentualer Zusammenhänge eingesetzt wurden. In einer qualitativen Untersuchung wurden Lehrkräfte und Lernende einbezogen, um herauszufinden, inwiefern das digitale Material das Verständnis und das Lernverhalten beeinflusst. Dabei wurden Interviews mit Lehrkräften geführt, welche die Planung umsetzten, um sowohl die didaktischen als auch die praktischen Herausforderungen des Einsatzes digitaler Medien zu erfassen. Die Ergebnisse der durchgeführten Interviews mit Lehrkräften bestätigen, dass das dynamische Prozentband das Verständnis prozentualer Zusammenhänge insbesondere durch die Visualisierung der Beziehung zwischen Grundwert, Prozentwert und Prozentsatz unterstützen kann. Viele Lehrkräfte hoben hervor, dass Lernende durch das interaktive Arbeiten mit dem Applet motivierter waren und erste konzeptuelle Einsichten gewannen – vor allem im Hinblick auf die Fixierung des Grundwerts als 100 %. Gleichzeitig wurde deutlich, dass nicht alle Schülerinnen und Schüler diese Einsichten auf neue Kontexte übertragen oder verbal ausdrücken konnten. Besonders leistungsschwächere und sprachlich weniger versierte Lernende benötigten intensive Unterstützung, da sie mit der Bedienung des Applets und der sprachlichen Komplexität des Forscherauftrags Schwierigkeiten hatten. Die Wirksamkeit des digitalen Materials hängt somit wesentlich von einer klaren Aufgabenstellung, didaktischer Begleitung und gezielter Differenzierung ab. Trotz der Herausforderungen zeigt sich insgesamt, dass digitale Medien, bei angemessener Einbettung, einen wertvollen Beitrag zur Förderung des Verständnisses in der Prozentrechnung leisten können.This master's thesis examines the introduction of percentage calculation at secondary level I using digital learning materials, in particular the dynamic percentage band. This master's thesis arose from my personal fascination with the possibilities offered by digital media in the classroom. Teaching maths, especially abstract concepts such as percentages, is a challenge for many pupils. This has motivated me, to look for ways in which modern technologies can support the learning process and increase learner motivation. Digital media is playing an increasingly important role in school education and can have a significant impact on pupils' mathematical understanding and motivation. Especially in percentage calculations, which are frequently used in everyday life, there are often conceptual understanding problems. The use of digital media offers an opportunity to make abstract content clearer through interactive and visual representations. The aim of this work was to analyse the potential of digital media and to evaluate its influence on the mathematical understanding and motivation of learners. The 5E teaching model served as a didactic framework for the structured embedding of the materials. It enables a step-by-step introduction to new mathematical concepts by systematically integrating different learning phases (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate). To investigate this question, a teaching unit was developed in which the dynamic percent band was used as a digital tool and an accompanying research assignment to illustrate percentage relationships. Teachers and learners were involved in a qualitative study to find out to what extent the digital material influences understanding and learning behaviour. Interviews were conducted with teachers who had implemented the planning in order to understand both the didactic and practical challenges of using digital media. The results of the interviews conducted with teachers confirm that the dynamic percentage band can support the understanding of percentage relationships, particularly by visualizing the relationship between the basic value, percentage value and percentage. Many teachers emphasized that learners were more motivated by working interactively with the applet and gained initial conceptual insights - especially regarding fixing the basic value as 100 %. At the same time, it became clear, that not all students were able to transfer these insights to new contexts or express them verbally. In particular, lower-performing and less linguistically proficient learners required intensive support, as they had difficulties with the operation of the applet and the linguistic complexity of the exploratory tasks. The effectiveness of the digital material therefore depends largely on a clear task, didactic support and targeted differentiation.
