    Revealing the impact of the rotational isomerism onto photoluminescent properties of some ortho derivatives of benzophenone

    Benzophenone (BP) scaffold, owing to its highly applicable photo-related properties, has been widespread among many branches of chemical research and industry. While the benzophenone molecule itself has been extensively studied towards the intrinsic mechanisms standing behind its prominent nature, yet its derivatives still tend to be under-explored in this particular regard. Coming across the disclosed imparity, throughout the present paper, a subject of rotational isomerism, anticipated to affect the BP frameworks substituted in the ortho position, is thoroughly investigated. In this respect, a bunch of ortho derivatives of BP are subjected to a systematic analysis carried out via both in silico DFT modeling and spectroscopic measurements (IR, UV–Vis). The obtained results show that the effect of rotamerism indeed applies to the studied group of compounds, as some of them reveal themselves in the form of multiple coexisting conformational isomers. What is more, as the indicated conformers are found to be characterized by substantially different emission profiles, the foregoing phenomenon is disclosed to have quite a remarkable impact onto the photoluminescence of the explored o-BP molecules

    piRAT: piRNA Annotation Tool for annotating, analyzing, and visualizing piRNAs

    Background: In recent years, Piwi-interacting RNAs (piRNAs) have been found to be involved in different biological roles beyond their initially identified role in protecting the germline genome. However, there is a lack of robust computational tools that facilitate their accurate annotation, analysis, and visualization, which would allow large-scale analysis of piRNAs across samples and species. Results: We present piRAT, a piRNA Annotation Tool for annotating both primary piRNAs from piRNA clusters and secondary piRNAs generated via the ping-pong cycle, using small RNA-seq data mapped to a genome. piRAT also performs descriptive analyses and generates comprehensive reports with visualizations to support annotations and provide further insights. Conclusions: In our comparative analyses, piRAT emerged as the most comprehensive tool available in terms of functionalities. It consistently produced higher-quality annotations of piRNA clusters and ping-pong sites and generated the most detailed reports. As piRAT requires no prior annotations or special data preprocessing, it is a versatile choice for any species, particularly for non-model organisms

    Russian society and official heroic narratives about World War II

    The chapter aims to present the results of the confrontation of the official state narrative about World War II with the attitudes and opinions of Russian society. In order to obtain the results, a number of sources were analyzed including Putin’s speeches on the Victory Day Celebration, transmissions of the parades (2012–2023) on https://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="https://youtube.com">youtube.com, Internet user comments under the video material, and public opinion surveys. The results are as follows: firstly, the collective rather than the individual hero is the central element of all narratives. This fact unites the nation around the official stories of struggle and victory. Secondly, the attractiveness of the story is determined by the presence of elements of political myth in the narratives, telling the story of Russia’s special mission and the vocation of the Russian nation to carry out its salvific mission. Depriving the myth of its power would not only require the proposal of a different narrative, but above all, individualizing the hero and indicating a different goal, taking into account his individual needs

    Reading performance of alpine schoolchildren in relationship to physical, social, and perceptual characteristics of the home and school environments

    The objective of this study was to examine the relationships between the physical, social, and perceptual characteristics of the home and school environments and children’s reading performance. A cross-sectional sample of 1251 8-12-year-old schoolchildren from the Tyrol region of Austria and Italy was analyzed. Reading performance was measured based on the number of correctly read sentences in 3 min. Teacher ratings of self- regulation and inattention, child reports of the restorative quality and safety of the residential area, and good family relations, as reported by mothers were also considered. Sociodemographic and lifestyle factors were obtained from mother questionnaires, and secondhand smoke exposure of the child was measured by cotinine in urine. A built environment score was constructed using imperviousness density, modeled traffic noise, and air pollution. Landscape diversity and natural surroundings around the school, and the presence of a domestic garden represented directly accessible nature. Structural equation modeling was used to examine the relationships between these variables. A positive parent-child relationship, higher maternal education, better self- regulation, being female, lower cotinine, and a greater level of school natural land use were associated with better reading performance. These associations were mediated by a combination of factors, including higher neighborhood safety and inattention. There was a positive association between reading and being native German speaker in North Tyrol. Exposure to the built environment and the absence of a domestic garden were also associated with better reading. Understanding local socioeconomic, land use, and cultural patterns can help better explain complex observed associations
