    The Visegrad Group then and now : another case for capacity-expectation gap syndrome

    This chapter delves into a wide spectrum of challenges as well as the capacity-expectation gap surrounding the cooperation of the Visegrad Group countries over the 35 years of its existence. A special emphasis is given to the implications of the political crisis in Ukraine and the period after the Russian Federation’s war of aggression. In what follows, a conceptual perspective is applied according to which the cooperation of the Visegrad Four has been marked by ad hoc initiatives lacking a long-lasting strategy of the V4’s international actorness. Apart from a few cases of joint actions and ad hoc coalitions (e.g. policy toward the Western Balkans, EU budgets, migration issues), it is difficult to identify areas of substantial as well as lasting regional cooperation. A striking example of such a pattern of action has been the ongoing divergence of positions and approaches of particular V4 countries toward the war in Ukraine. Such divergence is most often caused by the political situation and pressing expectations related to internal political cleavages. Adopting a change and continuity explanatory perspective, this chapter critically assesses the functioning of the V4 group by identifying the strategic challenges that political leaders have been facing in Central Europe recently

    Poza prawem: Kryminalizacja, solidarność i przetrwanie w Europie to wspólny projekt graficzny stworzony przez socjolożki, etnografów, artystów i aktywistki, w przejmujący i szczery sposób ukazujący historie osób, których życie zostało naznaczone społecznymi i politycznymi konsekwencjami kryminalizacji w Europie. Niemal całkowity zakaz aborcji w Polsce, przepisy dotyczące mowy nienawiści w różnych krajach Europy, faktyczny zakaz akcji ratunkowych na Morzu Śródziemnym oraz kryminalizacja pracy seksualnej - wszystkie te działania składają się na zaostrzającą się politykę karania, represyjnego zarządzania bezpieczeństwem i zagrożeniem, która rozlewa się po całym kontynencie. W ośmiu poruszających, ilustrowanych opowieściach spotykamy osoby zaangażowane w oddolne akcje poszukiwawczo-ratownicze i aktywizm aborcyjny, osoby pracujące seksualnie, moderujące treści w internecie, czy używające narkotyków. W komiksie wypływamy w morze z osobami, które ratują życie osób migranckich na coraz bardziej zmilitaryzowanych granicach Europy, śledzimy historię kobiety osadzonej w więzieniu za niezapłacony bilet autobusowy w Niemczech, obserwujemy skutki zaniedbania państwa i przemocy wobec osób używających narkotyków w Polsce oraz towarzyszymy migrantce poruszającej się w świecie policyjnych represji wobec pracy seksualnej, która odnajduje siłę w swojej wspólnocie. Spotykamy też wiele innych osób, które na co dzień mierzą się ze skutkami kryminalizacji. Te opowieści etnograficzne nie tylko unaoczniają niepokojące mechanizmy kryminalizacji w Europie, ale także pokazują nadzieję i solidarność zwykłych ludzi w obliczu rosnących represji. Ci, którzy zostali wykluczeni przez prawo, nie pozostają bierni wobec kryminalizacji. Dostosowują się, stawiają opór i walczą o przetrwanie. Ich osobiste historie są rzadko widziane czy słyszane - ten komiks pozwala to zmienić.Down by Law: Criminalization, Solidarity, and Survival in Europe is a collaborative graphic novel by ethnographers, artists, and activists that starkly and honestly illuminates people’s stories of those whose lives have been shaped by the social and political implications of criminalization across Europe. The near-total ban on abortion in Poland, new hate speech laws across Europe, a de facto ban of sea rescue in the Mediterranean, and the criminalization of sex work—these trends toward a harsher politics of criminalization, securitization, and threat are spreading throughout the continent. In eight moving, illustrated vignettes, readers encounter everyday people involved in search-and-rescue activism, sex work, internet content moderation, abortion activism, drug use. We set sail with civilians who take action to save the lives of migrants at sea who face increasingly militarized borders, follow the journey of a woman jailed for a bus fare she couldn’t pay, see the impact of state neglect and violence on people who use drugs in Poland, and follow a migrant woman navigating the challenges of sex work policing who finds resilience in her community, and more. These ethnographic stories not only bring to life alarming insights into criminalization across Europe but the hope and solidarity of everyday people in the face of increasing repression. The criminalized don’t stay put. They adapt, resist, and survive. Their personal stories are rarely seen or heard, until now

    Constraining lens masses in moderately to highly magnified microlensing events from Gaia

    Context. Microlensing events provide a unique way to detect and measure the masses of isolated, non-luminous objects, particularly dark stellar remnants. Under certain conditions, it is possible to measure the mass of these objects using photometry alone, specifically when a microlensing light curve displays a finite source (FS) effect. This effect generally occurs in highly magnified light curves, i.e. when the source and the lens are very well aligned. Aims. In this study, we analyse Gaia Alerts and Gaia Data Release 3 datasets, identifying four moderate-to-high-magnification microlensing events without a discernible FS effect. The absence of this effect suggests a large Einstein radius, implying substantial lens masses. Methods. In each event, we constrained the FS effect, and therefore established lower limits for the angular Einstein radius and lens mass. Additionally, we used the DarkLensCode software to obtain the mass, distance, and brightness distribution for the lens based on the Galactic model. Results. Our analysis established lower mass limits of ∼0.7 M_{⊙} for one lens and ∼0.3 − 0.5 M_{⊙} for two others. A DarkLensCode analysis supports these findings, estimating lens masses in the range of ∼0.42 − 1.70 M_{⊙} and dark lens probabilities exceeding 80%. These results strongly indicate that the lenses are stellar remnants, such as white dwarfs or neutron stars. Conclusions. While further investigations are required to confirm the nature of these lenses, we demonstrate a straightforward yet effective approach to identifying stellar remnant candidates

    Catalytic oxidation technology is considered one of the most promising techniques for the catalytic removal of toluene, with the key lies in the design of efficient and cost-effective catalysts. In recent years, various catalysts have been investigated for the catalytic oxidation of toluene. However, the complexity of the practical flue gas components and the requirement for continuous high-temperature operation impose higher demands on catalyst stability and anti-deactivation performance. While some reviews have mentioned the stability issue of VOCs catalysts, few studies have specifically focused on and systematically summarized the diverse deactivation factors and corresponding mitigation strategies for the catalytic oxidation of toluene. This review specifically addresses these issues by presenting recent advances in the catalytic oxidation of toluene, focusing on the chemical stability, thermal stability, and deactivation resistance of the catalyst. The key reaction mechanisms (Eley-Rideal mechanism, Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism and Mars-van Krevelen mechanism) are outlined, along with a thorough analysis of major deactivation factors, including thermal sintering, carbon deposition, and the detrimental effects of H2O,SO2,CO2H_{2}O, SO_{2}, CO_{2}, and chlorine. Strategies for designing robust catalysts, such as optimizing active phase components, supports, physicochemical properties, and structural engineering, are systematically discussed. Some catalysts with high activity have also demonstrated significant stability improvements (e.g., the stability of single-atom catalysts). Moreover, regeneration methods for deactivated catalysts are critically reviewed. Finally, the current research progress and future challenges in this field are evaluated. This review aims to guide the design of oxidation catalysts with superior stability and higher operational efficiency under realistic industrial conditions
