A Framework for the Assessment of the Implementation of Mobility as a Service Packages

    No full text
Mobility as a Service (MaaS) has the potential to transform urban transportation by integrating multiple mobility services into a seamless and user-centric system. However, the impact of different MaaS subscription models on transport demand and system efficiency remains an open challenge. In this research, we propose a simulation-based methodological framework to evaluate the effects of MaaS implementation on users' modal choices, operational performance, and sustainability. The framework integrates discrete choice models for demand estimation and macro-simulation tools for network representation, allowing for the computation of quantities of interest for multiple stakeholders of the MaaS ecosystem. A synthetic urban network is used to test various MaaS configurations, analyzing key performance indicators such as modal shift, and revenue distribution among operators. Results indicate that different MaaS bundles generate distinct effects on travel behavior and system performance, highlighting the need for a structured assessment before implementation

Performance and Emissions Evaluation of a Turbofan Burner with Hydrogen Fuel

    No full text
This paper examines the changes in the performance level and pollutant emissions of a combustion chamber for turbofan engines. Two different fuels are compared: a conventional liquid fuel of the JET-A (kerosene) class and a hydrogen-based gaseous fuel. A turbofan engine delivering a 70 kN thrust at cruise conditions and 375 kN thrust at takeoff is considered. The comparison is carried out by investigating the combustion pattern with different boundary conditions, the latter assigned along a typical flight mission. The calculations rely on a combined approach with a preliminary lumped parameter estimation of the engine performance and thermodynamic properties under different flight conditions (i.e., take-off, climbing, and cruise), and a CFD-based combustion simulation employing as boundary conditions the outputs obtained from the 0-D computations. The results are discussed in terms of performance, thermal properties, distributions throughout the combustor, and of pollutant concentration at the combustor outflow. The results demonstrate that replacing the JET-A fuel with hydrogen does not affect the overall engine performance significantly, and stable and efficient combustion takes place inside the burner, although a different temperature regime is observable causing a relevant increase in thermal NO emissions

Sex- and site-specific associations of circulating lipocalin 2 and incident colorectal cancer: Results from the EPIC cohort

    No full text
Experimental research has uncovered lipocalin 2 (LCN2) as a novel biomarker implicated in the modulation of intestinal inflammation, metabolic homeostasis, and colon carcinogenesis. However, evidence from human research has been scant. We, therefore, explored the association of pre-diagnostic circulating LCN2 concentrations with incident colorectal cancer (CRC) in a nested case–control study within the in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) cohort. LCN2 was measured in 1267 incident CRC cases matched to 1267 controls using incidence density sampling. Conditional logistic regression was used to estimate incidence rate ratios (IRRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) according to tumor subsite and sex. Weighted Cox proportional hazard regression was used to explore associations by adiposity status. In multivariable-adjusted analyses, the IRR [95% CI] per doubling in LCN2 concentration was 1.16 [0.98–1.37] for CRC overall, 1.26 [1.00–1.59] for colon cancer, and 1.08 [0.85–1.38] for rectal cancer. The association for colon cancer was more pronounced in women (IRR [95% CI], 1.66 [1.20–2.30]) and for proximal colon cancer (IRR [95% CI], 1.96 [1.15–3.34]), whereas no association was seen in men and distal colon cancer. The association for colon cancer was positive in individuals with high waist circumference (hazard ratio [95% CI], 1.69 [1.52–1.88]) and inverse in individuals with low waist circumference (hazard ratio [95% CI], 0.86 [0.76–0.98], P interaction<0.01). Overall, these data suggest that pre-diagnostic LCN2 concentrations were positively associated with colon cancer, particularly occurring in the proximal colon, in women and among individuals with abdominal adiposity

Stakeholder Engagement and Social Sustainability Practices in Innovative Italian SMEs: The Mediating Role of Artificial Intelligence

    No full text
This study aims to examine how stakeholder engagement shapes social sustainability in innovative Italian SMEs, highlighting the mediating role of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Drawing on Ajzen’s extended Theory of Planned Behavior and stakeholder theory, it proposes that higher levels of stakeholder engagement foster stronger intentions to adopt socially responsible practices, ultimately yielding more effective social outcomes. The research further posits that AI tools-encompassing chatbots, predictive analytics, and big data-reinforce the transition from intention to action by enabling proactive communication and personalized stakeholder interactions. A cross-sectional survey of 2,273 innovative SMEs identified through the Italian Chamber of Commerce will capture stakeholder engagement measures, AI capabilities, and social sustainability practices. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) will test the proposed relationships, controlling for firm-level attributes such as size, financial performance, and age. The findings will show how AI-driven capacities and robust stakeholder engagement foster social sustainability, offering practical insights for managers and policymakers

Bio-medicine Applications Based on New Frontiers in Medical Informatics and Bioinformatics

    No full text
Medical informatics and bioinformatics are relatively new and progressing fast disciplines which are of great significance in the contemporary bio-medicine. Medical informatics is concerned with information technology use in improving healthcare services, whereas bioinformatics focuses on using computer applications to manage biological data, mainly for genomic and protein studies. The current article looks at how both aspects are applied in bio-medicine with particular emphasis on personalized medicine and genotype-based medicine. From the extensive review of current literature, the research finds that both EHRs and bioinformatics are being embraced in practice and the findings show that they can attain the set objectives of increasing diagnostic accuracy, minimizing errors, and enhancing patient care. Nevertheless, limitations such as privacy of patient’s information, data complexity, and prohibitive costs persist. This section presents a comparison of the utilization of informational tools in the field of bioinformatics and EHR in the clinical practice of different countries and circumferences. The results section states the findings with respect to the research questions highlighting the relationships between the adoption of bioinformatics tools and processes directly on individual patients. The discussion of the results in the context of the existing ones supplies the encouraging facts supporting the usage of bioimaging systems on the genetic studies and precision treatment of patients. Finally, the paper wraps up with a discussion of possible
