Adaptation and energy saving through urban green spaces in Climate Action Plans: the experiences of 20 Global Cities

    No full text
Given the rising temperatures and more frequent and intense events typical of the climate crisis, urban areas are increasingly subject to severe effects. In the search for effective adaptation, Climate Action Plans (CAPs) are seen as one of the main strategic approaches, and within these, greening interventions emerge as cross-cutting solutions, achieving goals in both mitigation and adaptation and generating multiple benefits for urban systems. The research reported in the current contribution is part of a broader project aimed at developing a tool in support of decision-making by policy makers for the development of more resilient cities. The present study systematically analyzes the CAPs of a sample of twenty cities recognized globally for their commitment to climate action. The objective is to identify significant relationships between the adaptation strategies put in place by the different cities and their urban, climatic, physical, social, and environmental characteristics, searching in particular to understand the role of green spaces in mitigating the effects of global warming. To achieve this objective, a three-step methodology is proposed. In the first step, multivariate statistical analysis is used to identify clusters of cities based on their climatic, physical, social, and environmental characteristics. In the second step, topic modeling techniques are used in the systematic analysis of the classes of adaptation actions contained in the CAPs. Finally, the results of the first two steps are used to conduct a comparative analysis of cities versus classes of actions, revealing the strengths and weaknesses of the measures in the individual CAPs. This knowledge forms the basis for construction the final tool, aimed at supporting decision-makers in selecting effectively contextualized measures for application in urban scenarios

The Role of Immersive Virtual Spaces in Enhancing Civic Participation and Its Narrative: An Explorative Study in the District of San Giovanni a Teduccio (Naples)

Participatory approaches are increasingly employed to engage citizens in the decision-making process, enabling them to actively articulate their opinions and suggestions. However, nowadays these attempts often come up against a feeling of general disillusionment among the population, especially in some territories, due to the low perception of the positive changes that have taken place and the lack of trust in the institutions, which are often considered too distant and closed in their ivory palace. The new technologies and, specifically, the metaverse with its virtual immersive environments (IVEs) can play a fundamental role in this context, facilitating the meeting between decision-makers and end-users, strengthening the narrative of the territories and their local identity, and representing a place for citizens to put forward their demands by overcoming a variety of territorial and social limits. This paper explores the issue, attempting to lay the groundwork for a future improvement of immersive and virtual co-design processes

Proposal to measure the Casimir effect across the superconducting transition

    No full text
The influence of the superconducting transition on the Casimir effect remains experimentally elusive. We propose an approach to address this challenge, exploiting the first-order superconducting transition induced in a thick film by a parallel magnetic field. Our calculations for a Au sphere opposite a Pb film, based on the Mattis-Bardeen theory, predict a jump in the Casimir force across the transition. By periodically modulating the magnetic field, we induce a corresponding modulation of the Casimir force that should be readily detectable with existing microtorsional oscillator technology, opening a promising pathway to finally observe the long-sought Casimir-superconductivity coupling. A successful measurement of this effect would provide crucial insights into the fundamental nature of the Casimir force and its interaction with macroscopic quantum phenomena

    Sraffa After Graziani

    No full text
Proposed here is a scheme of a monetary theory of capitalist production in which the interpretation of the Sraffian system suggested by Augusto Graziani can be conceived not as an alternative but as a possible complement to the traditional analyses of Sraffa's work. Graziani's interpretation insists on the problem of capitalist command over production and seems to suggest a view of Sraffa rather skeptical of policies that avoid any type of public planning of production

Perioperative outcomes in testicular cancer patients treated with retroperitoneal lymph node dissection

    No full text
Objective: No large-scale population-based studies quantified perioperative outcomes in testicular cancer (TC) patients treated with retroperitoneal lymph node dissection (RPLND), especially in non-metastatic and metastatic stages. Moreover, no previous studies compared outcomes in centers of excellence (Indiana University School of Medicine, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and MD Anderson Cancer Center) vs. large-scale population-based databases. Methods: Using the National Inpatient Sample (2000–2015), we identified TC patients undergoing RPLND. Patient, tumor, and hospital characteristics were tested in two separate multivariable models addressing overall complications and length of hospital stay (LOS). Critical care therapy and in-hospital mortality rates were also quantified. All models were weighted and adjusted for clustering, as well as all available patient and hospital characteristics. Results: In 1,988 non-metastatic patients overall complications were recorded in 469 (23.6%) vs. 758 (34.3%) in 2,213 metastatic RPLND patients. The rates of RPLND as well as the overall complications did not change during the study period. LOS increased by two days in both non-metastatic (4 vs. 6 days) and metastatic stages (5 vs. 7 days) in the presence of complications. In multivariable logistic regression models neither teaching hospital status nor hospital bed-size were predictors of overall complications. Conclusion: RPLND patients should be informed about a 1:4 chance of overall complications in non-metastatic settings and of a 1:3 chance of overall complications in metastatic settings. Moreover, complication rates in population-based repertories are 2- to 4-fold higher than centers of excellence

Predictive value of neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio, platelet to lymphocyte ratio, and systemic inflammatory index for detection of recurrence of pleomorphic adenoma of the major salivary glands: a multicenter study

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation among inflammatory biomarkers, such as the systemic immune-inflammation index (SII), the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and the platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and the recurrence of pleomorphic adenomas (PAs). Study Design: This was a retrospective multicenter study. Six hundred eight patients diagnosed with PA and treated by tumor enucleation were included in the analyses. The patients were extracted from a 20-year database of 2 referral centers (January 2000 to January 2020). Data about age, gender, voluntary habits, tumor characteristics, tumor treatment, and values of NLR, PLR, and SII were collected. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to calculate the optimal cutoff values for SII, PLR, and NLR. A linear regression model (LRM) and a nonlinear logistic regression model (NLRM) were implemented for NLR, PLR, and SII. Results: All 3 inflammatory parameters were statistically significant correlated to the recurrence of the tumor. The best performance was achieved by NLR (cutoff of 2.960) with area under the ROC curve (AUC) = 0.91, accuracy of 96.1%, sensitivity of 78.4% and specificity of 97.2%, PPV = 64.4%, and NPV = 98.6%. LRM and NLRM including all hematological parameters did not improve performance in terms of recurrence detection. Conclusions: The use of 3 inflammatory biomarkers could be a useful tool to predict recurrence of tumor in case of PA ≤ 3 cm. NLR in particular could be sensitive with a cutoff of 2.960. The use of NLR, PLR, and SII could be a good reference point for surgical decision making and follow-up in clinical practice. (Oral Surg Oral Med Oral Pathol Oral Radiol YEAR;VOL:page range
