CRITICAL EDITION OF MUERTE EN AMOR ES LA AUSENCIA BY SEBASTIÁN DURÓN

Thesis (DM) – Indiana University, Music, 2025This dissertation presents the first modern critical edition of Muerte en Amor es la Ausencia, a three-act comedia composed by Sebastián Durón (1660–1716) to a libretto by Antonio de Zamora, premiered at the Coliseo del Buen Retiro in Madrid on 20 November 1697 for the birthday celebrations of King Carlos II. The edition is based on the unique surviving musical source (M/1365) held at the Biblioteca Nacional de España, collated with two manuscript libretti (MSS/15095 and MSS/16323) that illuminate the work's textual transmission and revision history. The introductory chapters situate the work within the broader context of seventeenth-century Spanish theatrical music, tracing the development of the comedia genre from its origins in the public corrales to its flourishing at the Spanish court. A biographical chapter examines Durón's career trajectory from provincial cathedral organist to maestro de capilla of the Royal Chapel, establishing the circumstances surrounding the work's composition during his tenure as the principal composer for royal celebrations. Extensive attention is given to historically informed performance practice, addressing instrumentation, basso continuo realization, vocal performance conventions, pitch standards, temperament, and the distinctive stylistic features that characterize Durón's theatrical output—including his innovative yet contested integration of Italian operatic elements within the Spanish tradition. The editorial commentary provides a detailed philological analysis of the sources, discusses the challenges posed by the work's mensural notation with blackening and void notation, and presents the methodology employed in text underlay and figured bass realization. A significant contribution of this edition is the reconstruction of the Sinphonia, of which only the basso continuo survives, based on period practice, partimento principles, and Durón's compositional procedures as evidenced throughout the work. The edition incorporates all necessary repetitions for strophic arias, aligns the musical text with the complete libretto structure, and provides editorial suggestions for musica ficta while maintaining transparency regarding all interventions. Appendices include a comprehensive record of editorial decisions, the reconstructed Sinphonia, the complete libretto, and a critical apparatus documenting textual variants between the sources
