A Multi-View Predictive Student Modeling Framework with Interpretable Causal Graph Discovery for Collaborative Learning Analytics

Understanding the relationship between student behaviors and learning outcomes is crucial for designing effective collaborative learning environments. However, collaborative learning analytics poses significant challenges, not only due to the complex interplay between collaborative problemsolving and collaborative dialogue but also due to the need for model interpretability. To address these challenges, this paper introduces a multi-view predictive student modeling framework using causal graph discovery. We first extract interpretable behavioral features from students’ collaborative dialogue data and game trace logs to predict student learning within a collaborative game-based learning environment. We then apply constraint-based sequential pattern mining to identify cognitive and social behavioral patterns in student’s data to improve predictive power. We employ unified causal modeling for interpreting model outputs, using causal discovery methods to reveal key interactions among student behaviors that significantly contribute to predicting learning outcomes and identifying frequent collaborative problem-solving skills. Evaluations of the predictive student modeling framework show that combining features from dialogue and in-game behaviors improves the prediction of student learning gains. The findings highlight the potential of multi-view behavioral data and causal analysis to improve both the effectiveness and the interpretability of collaborative learning analytics.Published versio

Overview of best practices for quantitative analysis of economic and academic benefits of research-enabling facilities

This report provides an overview of best practices regarding quantitative analyses of the economic and academic benefits of research-enabling facilities, and a few comments about potential pitfalls. A defining characteristic of research-enabling facilities is that they provide some sort of service to a group of researchers who are treated more as clients than as collaborators. This brief overview summarizes the contents of a suite of papers regarding quantitative and qualitative methods for interrogating the Return on Investment (ROI) in research-enabling facilities in financial and other terms. Among the reports analyzed in pursuing the issue of assessment of research-enabling facilities, it is possible to discern five different types of quantitative assessments of return on investment. This report also discusses best practices in depiction of return on investment analyses and utility evaluation generally for research-enabling facilities. All of these best practices are applicable to research institutions at larger scales.Indiana Universit

Stress-Informed Voice Pedagogy in the Applied Voice Studio

Thesis (DM) – Indiana University, Music, 2025Stress is an inescapable reality in the lives of voice students, with implications not only for their performance outcomes but also for their capacity to learn, self-regulate, and thrive in vulnerable artistic spaces. While the concept of optimal stress has long been acknowledged in psychology and sports performance studies, voice teachers and students alike are often left without sufficient guidance on how to recognize, manage, and productively harness stress in the applied studio setting. This document addresses that gap through an interdisciplinary exploration that integrates research from voice pedagogy, psychology, education, and sports science, offering both context and practical frameworks for stress management in vocal training. The project opens by situating the applied voice studio as a uniquely personal and pedagogically rich environment—one in which modeling, observation, and interpersonal dynamics form the backbone of learning. With stress as both an obstacle and a potential tool for growth, this author advocates for a reframing: away from stress elimination and toward thoughtful modulation. By tracing the historical evolution of stress theory and connecting it to the physiological and psychological realities of vocal performance, the study lays a foundation for practical interventions aimed at fostering resilience and learning efficacy. Included are applications of mindfulness, trauma-informed teaching practices, and cognitive-behavioral strategies tailored for the voice studio. Fictional case studies and assessment tools are provided to help teachers and students incorporate awareness and intentionality into their work. At its core, this document is both a critique of insufficient teacher training around stress and a resource for those seeking to lead by example, demonstrating that well-managed stress is not merely survivable but essential to excellence in vocal performance and education

Literacy, Wellness, and Everything Else: How Are Financial Wellness Websites in Higher Education Named?

    No full text
In recent years, both technology and financial wellness programming have significantly transformed the landscape of higher education in the United States. As financial wellness becomes an increasingly prominent student service, understanding how institutions name and frame these resources is crucial. Specifically, the distinction between terms like "financial literacy" and "financial wellness" can convey different messages to students about the focus and scope of these services. The choice of terminology can impact student engagement and perceptions of the resources offered, influencing whether they view these services as essential for long-term financial health or as basic, one-time educational interventions. In recent years, both technology and financial wellness programming have significantly transformed the landscape of higher education in the United States. EFFECTS OF TEMPERATURE AND AN IMMUNE RESPONSE ON THE EGG QUALITY OF TROPICAL HOUSE CRICKETS (GRYLLODES SIGILLATUS)

    No full text
Climate change is becoming a growing concern as it contributes to temperature fluctuations and increase in pathogen prevalence. Temperature fluctuations can raise an organism’s internal body temperature and alter their physiological responses. For many thermosensitive species, the smallest change in temperature can have great influence on their behavior. Similarly, pathogen exposure can alter an organism’s behavior as they are experiencing an immune response and may have to reallocate energy to increase chances of survival. To explore the relationship between climate change and pathogen exposure, tropical Gryllodes Sigillatus female crickets were exposed to temperature variations (25℃, 31℃) and lipopolysaccharides (LPS) derived from Serratia marcescens (3.5 micrograms/microliter or 5.0 micrograms/microliter). We focused on how temperature fluctuations and pathogen exposure influenced reproductive behavior. Our results revealed that a warmer temperature variation reduced egg production and protein content. While both temperature changes led to reductions in egg production and protein content, only the warmer temperature produced statistically significant decreases in both measures when compared to the control temperature. LPS treatment variations revealed no statistical significance when compared to the frozen control. Our data supports the trade-off hypothesis, showing that female crickets will reallocate resources to increase their survival at the expense of reproductive effort when under stress. This study emphasizes the complex interactions between environmental stressors and reproductive behavior in thermosensitive species and underscores the need for further research on how climate change and pathogen exposure may impact other tropical organisms behavior

Gathering and analyzing social networks in 2025: Network Canvas and IDEANet

    No full text
Gabriel (he/him) received his PhD in Sociology from Duke University in May 2025. He currently works as a post-doctoral fellow with Brea Perry at the Irsay Institute. Gabriel is a medical sociologist and network analyst who studies the concurrence of social connections and experiences of health, combining quantitative and qualitative methods. His dissertation explored how medical authority is collectively generated and can produce new forms of illness trajectories. He examined mental health self-diagnosis – identifying with a mental illness without a formal diagnosis – as a case study of this process.Social networks are powerful analytical tools that can help us operationalize many of our theories about the social world. Nonetheless, they also present difficult challenges. This workshop will cover a workflow utilizing Network Canvas and IDEANet to gather network data and generate measures, while minimizing these difficulties
