Vehicle routing software selection for last mile delivery companies using Fermatean fuzzy-based model

    No full text
Vehicle routing software (VRS) is utilized by last mile delivery (LMD) companies for route optimization. The problem of VRS selection is of paramount importance for LMD companies. In this research, a VRS selection model tailored to LMD companies is developed and proposed. This model is based on Fermatean fuzzy sets (FFS). The FFS-preference selection index (PSI) method is proposed for weighting the criteria. The FFS-alternative ranking order method accounting for two-step normalization (AROMAN) method is defined for ranking the VRS alternatives. This hybrid approach, developed as FFS-PSI-AROMAN, incorporates the FFYWA operator based on Yager t-norm and t-conorm operations as the aggregation operator to enhance the strength of aggregation operations. Additionally, an algorithm has been developed for the model. The developed model is applied through a real-life case study conducted in an LMD company operating in Turkey. An expert group is formed, criteria are defined, alternative VRS options are identified, and the proposed algorithm is employed to make the optimal VRS selection. Sensitivity analysis scenarios are created, and robustness tests are conducted to evaluate the model’s reliability. Comprehensive implications for both the research and managerial insights are provided, along with recommendations for future research endeavors

Assessing the impact of resource efficiency, renewable energy R&D spending, and green technologies on environmental sustainability in Germany: Evidence from a Wavelet Quantile-on-Quantile Regression

    No full text
One important challenge in the world today is how to reverse the growth of carbon dioxide emissions to save the planet from environmental degradation without putting economic growth at risk. Several measures and initiatives such as resource efficiency, green energy transition, energy technologies, emission control, etc. Have been adopted by several countries worldwide in order to mitigate CO2 emissions. This study investigates the impact of resource efficiency, renewable energy Research and Development (R&D) expenditures, and green technologies towards fostering environmental sustainability in Germany. Using quarterly data spanning from 1974 to 2019, the study applies the Wavelet Quantile-on-Quantile Regression (WQQR) approach. This method embeds a wavelet kernel into quantile-on-quantile regression to capture the time-varying coefficients. The empirical findings reveal a negative impact of resource efficiency, renewable energy R&D expenditures, and green technologies on energy-based carbon intensity. The results further reveal that, with the exception of green technologies, the negative effects of resource efficiency and renewable energy R&D expenditures are stronger in the middle quantiles. The study demonstrates the robustness of these results through the wavelet quantile regression analysis. Finally, the study offers valuable policy implications that align with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 7 and 13, aiming to achieve a sustainable environment

Objectives: Recent studies on flow experi-ence have supported that flow state providesan enhancement on performance. Intrin-sic motivation is one significant determi-nant of this relationship, is in relation withself-compassion. The type of activity (e.g.,work-related and leisure) is also found to beimportant to differentiate the level of perfor-mance as well as the quality of activity. Thisstudy aims to determine the positive influencesof self-compassion, free time managementand flow states on explaining higher perfor-mance. Method: The sample consisted of 150participants: 92 female (61.3%) and male 58(38.7%). The mean age was 32.11 (?=6.05).They conducted Demographic InformationForm, Self-Compassion Scale Short Version,Free Time Management Scale, Swedish FlowPropensity Scale and Work Performance Scale. Results: A three-step hierarchical regres-sion model was conducted to measure theamount of variance in performance. In thefirst step, self-compassion explained 6% vari-ability in performance (F(1, 148)=8.56,p<.01). The second step, free time manage-ment explained 19% of additional variability (F(4, 145)=12.06,p<.01). In the last step, workflow significantly contributed 4% to the modeland was related to increased performance (F(8, 141)=7.08,p<.01). Consequently, thefinal model was explaining 29 % of the vari-ance. Conclusion: The findings of this studysuggest that higher self-compassion, betterfree time management skills, and frequent flowexperiences increase performance

Enhancements in propulsion systems have played a key role in promoting aircraft fuel efficiency, which serves to achieve global decarbonization goals. In particular, investigation by decoupling individual components of the whole engine explicitly provides insight about improvement potential. In this study, stage-based exergetic assessments of the turbomachinery components such as compressor and turbine for a large turboprop engine used in military cargo aircraft are performed for five different flight cases. As a novelty, a new index called specific irreversibility ratio (SIR) showing irreversibility per unit power is established. In this regard, exergy efficiency of compressor changes from 86.6 % to 96.3 % throughout the 14 stages whereas for whole compressor, it is measured as 89.3 %. On the other hand, exergy efficiency of gas turbine changes from 92.5 % to 91.8 % throughout 2 stages whereas, for power turbine, it varies from 89.1 % to 89.7 % throughout 2 stages. Moreover, SIR of air compressor diminishes from 12.94 % to 4.26 % throughout 14 stages whereas those of gas turbine and power turbine increase from 8.17 % to 8.84 % and from 11.52 % to 12.58 % along with two stages, respectively. As for effect of flight cases, exergy efficiency of whole compressor changes by 2 % whereas those of gas and power turbines vary by 0.2 % and 0.5 %, respectively throughout flight cases. However, improvement potential rate of air compressor experiences a change between 23.81 kW and 58.19 kW whereas it varies between 27.31 kW and 50.74 kW for gas turbine and between 26.24 kW and 36.23 kW for power turbine. It could be inferred that variation of exergetic metrics throughout stages is more apparent in comparison with those of flight cases. The methodology improved in this study could help in understanding stage-based efficiency of turbomachinery components at on-design and off-design conditions

Deterioration conditions of the runway surface (deep track, cracking, raveling, and potholes ) and contaminants greatly affect the landing performance of the aircraft. In this research study, an optimal fractional order proportional integral and derivative controller (FOPID-GA) is designed with a genetic algorithm for the smooth operation of aircraft landing gear systems. To prove the effectiveness, performance, and accuracy of the proposed approach, a comparative study of the new technique and the traditional controllers such as PID, PID-TD, FOPID-TD, and PID-GA controllers was conducted on the MATLAB/Simulink platform. The simulation results clearly show that the proposed FOPID-GA controller outperforms the existing controllers in terms of performance, and damping accuracy. The effectiveness of the FOPID-GA controller is evaluated through simulation studies, demonstrating its potential to enhance aircraft landing gear performance and safety under adverse conditions.

How do household coping strategies evolve with increased food insecurity? An examination of Nigeria's food price shock of 2015–2018

    No full text
Faced with a significant devaluation of its currency and a surge in food prices, the Nigerian government prohibited the use of foreign currency for food imports. This essentially blocked the importation of numerous food items under the guise of stimulating the domestic output of these staples. Consequently, food prices in Nigeria increased despite a global decline in food prices, and the incidence and severity of food insecurity escalated. This study examines the changes in the types and severity of coping mechanisms for food insecurity resulting from the food price shock caused by the oil price crash, currency devaluation, and restrictions on foreign exchange. Nigeria's General Household Survey Panel data from 2012 and 2015, during periods of high oil prices, is compared with data from 2018 when oil prices had remained low, the currency had been devalued, and the treasury had been depleted. Alongside detailed descriptive statistics, logistic and hurdle regressions are employed for statistical analysis. Findings indicate a rise in the percentage of Nigerian households grappling with food insecurity from 2015 to 2018. During this period, 68.7% of households resorted to at least one coping mechanism, 31.8% adopted six or more coping strategies, and 43.2% resorted to severe coping strategies. The issue stems not primarily from natural disasters or conflicts but from a failure in macroeconomic and agricultural economic policies. Our findings confirm that these policies come at great cost, particularly to female‐headed households, single‐parent households, households headed by elderly people, and other vulnerable populations, pushing them deeper into food insecurity

Global evidence on the energy-environment dilemma: The role of energy-related uncertainty across diverse environmental indicators

    Get PDF
Several existing studies show that macroeconomic uncertainties intensify global environmental and climate challenges, putting the globe at risk of not being able to achieve the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. In this study, we provide global evidence on the role of energy-related uncertainty in the energy - environment dilemma between 1996 and 2021. We employ three distinct environmental indicators - load capacity factor (LCF), carbon dioxide emissions (CO2), and ecological footprint (EFP) - alongside a comprehensive global energy-related uncertainty index and time-frequency-quantile methods based on the Wavelet Quantile Correlation, Cross-Quantilogram, and Wavelet Local Multiple Correlation with Dominance. The empirical results suggest negative and strong nonlinear dependencies between energy-related uncertainty and the LCF across periods and quantiles. The results further suggest that the energy-related uncertainty has positive and strong nonlinear dependences not only with CO2 emissions but also EFP across various periods and quantiles. The results further suggest that the dependences between energy-related uncertainty and environmental indicators vary across periods and quantiles, with evidence of stronger dependency structures in the long run. These findings underscore the substantial influence of energy-related uncertainties on contemporary environmental challenges. We suggest that governments and policymakers need to reshape policy directives toward mitigating the environmental effects of energy-related uncertainties

While many studies in the literature have examined whether the Internet has replaced or complemented traditional media, there has been less interest in exploring the factors that explain why people have been using analog media to a greater or lesser extent since they started going online. Thus, this research on the reasons why Generation Z use analog media and their experience with traditional media is based on the assumption that Generation Z are relatively distant from analog media forms such as newspapers, books, cinema, television and radio and the social, cultural, and intellectual expe riences they produce. The purpose of this research was to elucidate the relationship that Generation Z, who have been born into digital communication technologies and shaped largely by their effects, have with analog media types. In other words, the purpose was to determine which motives, variables, or motivations determine the reasons and frequency of the use of these media by the Generation Z. The study aimed to elucidate the relationship that Generation Z have with analog media types. For this purpose, Generation Z individuals were asked about the reasons why they read newspapers or magazines, watch television, listen to the radio, and go to the cinema using the Reasons for Analog Media Use Scale to determine their reasons for using analog media types. In this study, 853 Generation Z individuals were asked questions through the use of a questionnaire. Of the par ticipants, 57.4% were female and 42.6% were male. According to the results of the study, 17.1% of the Generation Z individuals watch television almost every day, while 8.7% never watch television. While 18.5% of the participants read books almost every day, 3.4% never read books. Generation Z individuals seem to not have reading habits and avoid reading especially long texts since they get bored very quickly. The fact that reading newspapers and magazines requires more time, attention, focus, and in-depth knowledge, and is a more linear process that is in contrast to the advantages offered by digital communication media such as the diversity of content and the ability of the user to individualize the content, causes analog media forms to be disregarded by Generation Z individuals. When the item descriptive statistics of the Reasons for Analog Media Use Scale were examined, it was observed that the most common reason for the use of analog media by Generation Z individuals, with the highest frequency of 3.84% among the reasons for use of analog media, was “it provides information about current issues and events”. Following this reason, “it provides information about world events” was the response with the second highest frequency of 3.76%. These results suggest that Generation Z individuals want to be informed about current issues and events, and they follow the events happening in the world. As is evident from the results of this research that Generation Z individuals also prefer analog media for purposes of getting information about world events and current issues and events and derive gratification from the use of analog media for these purposes. In this study, the effectiveness of the Generation Z individuals’ perception of analog media as entertainment on gratification was investigated. According to the findings of the study, 3.59% of the participants stated that they use analog media because “it provides recreation”. In addition, according to 3.46% of the responses given by the Generation Z individuals, analog media is also an option used to “spend leisure time”. Moreover, 3.20% of the participants agreed with the statement that spending time for analog media has become a common habit for them. Accordingly, the results of this study suggest that Generation Z, which use online media intensively, do not completely ignore analog media, but prefer analog media mainly for recreational purposes. Generation Z individuals have stated that using analog media for personal development and self-expression purpos es provides them with a richer perspective and interpretation (3.28%). People argue that they actively engage (such as liking, sharing, and commenting) with fake news rather than news with factual authenticity, and that this phenomenon is a clear sign of the decline in the credibility of traditional news media (Silverman, 2016). As a result, in addition to the positive effects of analog media such as “providing information about current issues and events”, “providing information about world events”, “using an understandable phraseology”, “providing a rich perspective and interpretation towards events”, and “playing a role in expressing ideas”, reasons such as the fact that a considerable part of the participants do not trust the information pro vided by analog media, that they prefer analog media since they attach importance to spelling rules, and that analog media plays a role in self-realization were among those given for the use of analog media by the Generation Z individuals. Therefore, Generation Z are aware of the importance of the pure language and grammar used by analog media, which makes traditional media even more preferable to them. The fact that traditional media does not succumb to haste in the process of content production and that information is presented in a conventional manner based on expert opinions also shows that Generation Z individuals agree with the thesis that traditional media makes an intellectual contribution to them. In conclusion, the media is an important force that affects the lives of individuals and shapes their universes of thought, especially through symbolic messages. It is thought that the argument that media is not a technical device, but an environment that shapes the meaning worlds of individuals, which is frequently discussed within the framework of the concept of media ecology, has also been internalized by Generation Z. Traditional media still provides significant ontological and epistemological benefits to Generation Z individuals. Generation Z individuals still give meaning to their existence through analog media, and their relationship with media is not ambivalent

Çalışmanın kavramsal temelleri, İletişim Çalışmaları Profesörü Renee Hobbs’un 2021 yılında ABD Yayıncılar Derneği tarafından Sosyal Bilimler alanında mükemmellik ödülü alan Mind Over Media: Propaganda Education for a Digital Age isimli kitabında yer alan fikirleri ve özellikle beneficial propaganda (faydalı propaganda) kavramı üzerine inşa edilmiştir. Purpose: In the era of pervasive digital media, the integration of propaganda into various educational levels and disciplines is a noteworthy phenomenon. Rather than stigmatizing propaganda, this study advocates for its incorporation into education to foster democratic engagement. The exploration of propaganda as an educational tool encourages questioning, dialogue, and critical thinking. The study draws on the insights of Communication Studies Professor Renee Hobbs, particularly her book "Mind Over Media: Propaganda Education for a Digital Age," which received the Excellence Award in Social Sciences from the US Association of Publishers in 2021. The focus is on the notion of beneficial propaganda, recognizing its potential positive impact. Method/Design/Methodology/Approach: The research involved two groups, each comprising five students from the Department of Communication Sciences and the Department of Political Science and Public Administration. Facilitated round-robin brainstorming sessions exposing participants to current digital propaganda content in political, public safety, and public health categories. Findings: Through circular analysis employing questionnaires addressing message source, target audience, techniques used, and messages about lifestyle, values, and perspective, the study emphasizes the role of propaganda education in developing critical thinking, fostering questioning, and facilitating dialogue amid the constant barrage of content. Originality: Especially considering the impact of digitalization on daily life, this study has a unique value as it defines digital propaganda and makes an evaluation of propaganda education
