    Get PDF
Objective: Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) is a condition described as the inability to control or stop alcohol consumption. The patients with AUD have an increased risk of developing atherosclerosis-related diseases. The present study aimed to evaluate oxidative contributors of atherosclerotic risk factors in patients with AUD.Methods: The male subjects diagnosed with AUD (n = 45) and the male subjects as control (n = 35) were enrolled in this study. All participants were undergone psychiatric evaluation and sociodemographic tests. Also, serum oxidative contributors of atherosclerosis including myeloperoxidase (MPO), ferroxidase, catalase (CAT), and lipid hydroperoxides (LOOH) were measured. Additionally, serum lipid profile tests and atherogenic indicators including atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) and non-high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol were also analyzed. Results: The AUD subject had significantly elevated MPO activity and LOOH levels with decreased antioxidant capacity. AIP and non-HDL cholesterol levels, the atherogenic indicators, were also higher in AUD group compared to the control group. We found the MPO activity and LOOH levels were positively correlated with AIP, non-HDL cholesterol levels, and amount of alcohol consumption. Additionally, CAT activity was negatively correlated with duration of alcohol consumption. Conclusion: Our results revealed that MPO and LOOH levels were elevated by severe alcohol intake and the athero-genic indicators, AIP and non-HDL cholesterol, were significantly correlated alcohol induced elevated oxidative risk factors. Therefore, it can be suggested that MPO activity and LOOH levels may be useful to determine jeopardy of atherosclerotic and the therapeutic interventions that reduce oxidative load could be taken into account to prevent atherosclerotic diseases before clinical manifestation

Institutional Quality and Geography of Discontent in the EU

    No full text
There has been a significant rise in anti-establishment votes in the European Union (EU). The decline in socio-economic outcomes and migration played an important role in understanding the rising discontent. However, none of the existing studies analysed the effect of socio-economic factors in different institutional settings. Our findings confirm that institutional quality is of paramount importance in explaining the recent rise in populism in the EU, as institutionally developed EU regions are less opposed to EU integration. Remarkably, the effects of socio-economic factors on populist votes vary in different institutional settings. The findings highlight that institutional improvements are vital for the EU perception of less developed and socio-economically isolated EU regions

Search for CP violation using (Formula presented.) events in the lepton+jets channel in pp collisions at ?s = 13 TeV

Results are presented on a search for CP violation in the production and decay of top quark-antiquark pairs in the lepton+jets channel. The search is based on data from proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV, collected with the CMS detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb?1. Possible CP violation effects are evaluated by measuring asymmetries in observables constructed from linearly independent four-momentum vectors of the final-state particles. The dimensionless chromoelectric dipole moment of the top quark obtained from the observed asymmetries is measured to be 0.04 ± 0.10 (stat) ± 0.07(syst), and the asymmetries exhibit no evidence for CP-violating effects, consistent with expectations from the standard model. No full text
Objective: Psychodynamic child psychotherapy is an evidence-based approach for a range of child mental health difficulties and needs to constantly adapt to meet the needs of children. This study is the first to investigate whether the use of mentalization-based interventions (i.e., a focus on promoting attention control, emotion regulation, and explicit mentalization) predicted a good therapeutic outcome in online psychodynamic child therapy sessions conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: The sample included 51 Turkish children (M-age = 7.43, 49% girls) with mixed emotional and behavioral problems. Independent raters coded 203 sessions from different phases in each child's treatment using the Mentalization-Based Treatment for Children Adherence Scale (MBT-CAS). Results: Multilevel modeling analyses showed children with higher emotional lability benefited more from attention control interventions compared to those with lower emotional lability. Discussion: Interventions that focus on developing the basic building blocks of mentalizing may be effective components of therapeutic action for online delivery of psychodynamic child psychotherapy, especially for children with greater emotional lability

The lengthy time of school closure was one defining factor in understanding child well-being during the pandemic in a context where school as a relational space holds great importance for children, particularly those from a low socioeconomic background. Considering this significant aspect of lengthy school closure during the pandemic in Turkey, this article explores children’s experiences concerning their day-to-day access to education, digital inequalities, housing conditions, and changing context of relations with peers and teachers. The article also explores the meaning that children attribute to school as a relational space where they shape their intergenerational and generational relations. The absence of the school in children’s lives for almost 2 years has been a major source of longing for such significant childhood space. Following our earlier work on the children’s negotiation of well-being within the boundaries of the relational spaces of home and school, this article looks into how children negotiate their well-being in a pandemic environment where school as a relational space has changed its meaning and where children’s caretakers’ (teachers, parents, and other) vulnerabilities have also increased. The analysis draws on the qualitative fieldwork carried out with 50 children during the summer of 2020 in Turkey. We aim to reflect on the experiences from children’s perspectives within the boundaries of the constraints that the pandemic has generated. This article also discusses how COVID-19 has widened the gap and increased vulnerabilities among the already disadvantaged groups and gender in terms of available resources and their allocation as it is reflected in time use that portrays the meaning that children attribute to their own experience during the pandemic. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG

Otizmli çocukların %81.8’inin yemek seçtiği saptanmıştır (p<0.05). Tipik gelişen çocukların %2.8’i bağırsak problemi yaşarken otizmli çocukların %45.5’i bağırsak problemi yaşamaktadır (p<0.05). This study aimed to compare the nutritional behaviors of children with autism spectrum disorder and children with typical development, and to examine the nutritional knowledge levels of their parents. The study was conducted with 69 (33 diagnosed with autism, 36 typical development) participants aged 3-6 years living in Balıkesir and their parents. In the questionnaire used in the study, demographic information of children and their parents, 'Eating Behavior Questionnaire for Children' scale to determine the nutritional behaviors of children, food consumption frequency form and the 'Nutrition Knowledge Level for Adults' scale to determine the nutritional knowledge level of their parents were used. Among 33 children diagnosed with autism, %21.2 were girls and %78.8 were boys (p<0.05). It was determined that the consumption of snacks in children with autism was less than those of children with typical development, and the difference found to be statistically significant (p<0.05). Children with autism spectrum disorder found to have a higher rate of nervous attack when they could not consume their favorite food at a rate of %69.7 (p<0.05). It determined that %81.8 of children with autism choose food (p<0.05). While %2.8 of children with typical developement had intestinal problems, %45.5 of children with autism had intestinal problems (p<0.05). As a result of the Child Eating Behavior Questionnaire scale, it determined that the autistic group exhibited more emotional overeating behavior (p<0.05). The education level of parents of children with typical developement was higher than parents of children with autism (p<0.05). When the relationship between nutrition and health was questioned, it was observed that the parents of children with typical development scored higher (p<0.05). As a result of the study, it has been determined that children with autism have more problems with nutrition compared to their children with typical developement peers and their families have less knowledge about nutrition, but there is a need for more comprehensive supportive studies on this subject

Measurement of the inclusive t(t)over-bar production cross section in the lepton plus jets channel in pp collisions at ?s=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector using support vector machines

    Get PDF
A measurement of the top quark pair-production cross section in the lepton + jets decay channel is presented. It is based on 4.6 fb(-1) of root s = 7 TeV pp collision data collected during 2011 by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. A three-class, multidimensional event classifier based on support vector machines is used to differentiate t (T) over bar events from backgrounds. The tt production cross section is found to be sigma(t (t) over bar) = 168.5 +/- 0.7(stat)(-5.9)(+6.2) (syst)(-3.2)(+3.4) (lumi) pb. The result is consistent with the Standard Model prediction based on QCD calculations at next-to-next-to-leading order

ABSTRACT: As the world has raced ahead and developed into a collection of wired cities and connected on the grid communities, we have also become effaced with challenges of urban sprawl, gentrification, pollution and climate change (Halegoua, 2020). Big tech companies as well as multiple governments around the globe are putting forth smart city technologies as a possible solution to our emerging problems, citing the power of modern technologies when data-driven systems as a solution to complex urban issues (Cocchia, 2014). At the same time science and technology research is destabilizing the assumption that technology is value neutral instead scholars posit the technological artifacts are imbued with consequences norms as well as values which can encourage certain behaviors while discouraging others (Costanza-Chock, 2020; Winner, 1980). Furthermore, the black box nature of AI systems further motivates the need to study the “less-tangible” aspects of algorithms and algorithmic thinking (Young & Kitchin, 2020, p. 3). This research undertakes the study of these ‘less-tangible’ aspects of technological artifacts and their creation and investigates how they manifest in the context of Smart City projects in Pakistan. In order to achieve this goal this research focuses on technical stakeholders which may be critically positioned to shed light upon what ethical considerations, deliberations, and concerns surface in the act of technological creation in the country. In so doing this research hopes to add to a conversation that has so far been restricted to western economies and allow the deconstruction of how data harms manifest and low-to-middle income countries. By conducting 12 semi structured participant interviews this research was able to show that while technical stakeholders are unsure of the local implementations of smart city projects the same cannot be said for datafication processes, perceptions of which, were largely positive. It also shows that trust in government-led initiatives is low in comparison to corporate initiatives, due to historical political instabilities. Although participants displayed some understanding of common ethical concerns their knowledge of how these issues can affect local communities was sparse at best, and inclination towards security at the cost of privacy also reared its head in the data. These insights show that local contexts severely impact how ethical choices are made and highlight the importance of including local stakeholders in applications of smart technology. In conclusion this research underscores the importance of mapping data ethics in previously understudied parts of the world so that a fuller picture of what ethics of smart cities means on a global scale can be constructed.ÖZET: Dünya hızla ilerleyip kablolu şehirlerden ve şebekeye bağlı topluluklardan oluşan bir koleksiyona dönüşürken, kentsel yayılma, soylulaştırma, kirlilik ve iklim değişikliği gibi sorunlarla da boğuşur hale gelindi (Halegoua, 2020).
