An EMG Controlled Bionic Arm with Machine Learning
7th International Symposium on Multidisciplinary Studies and Innovative Technologies, ISMSIT 2023 -- 26 October 2023 through 28 October 2023 -- -- 194332This study uses electromyography (EMG) signals and machine learning techniques to create a bionic arm specifically made for amputees. The user's intended movements can be decoded and converted into orders for the bionic arm by observing and analyzing these signals. An EMG sensor was initially placed on the surface of particular muscles in the lower arm as part of the project's data-collection phase. As the muscles performed various movements, the electrodes captured the bioelectric signals they produced. These recorded bioelectrical signals are classified according to each movement by going through a series of processes, and it was aimed to increase the functionality of the bionic arm by gaining many movements control. The results showed promising advancements in the field and highlighted the potential for improving the quality of living for people with limb loss. © 2023 IEEE
Constraints on anomalous Higgs boson couplings to vector bosons and fermions from the production of Higgs bosons using the ?? final state
A study of anomalous couplings of the Higgs boson to vector bosons and fermions is presented. The data were recorded by the CMS experiment at a center-of-mass energy of pp collisions at the LHC of 13 TeV and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb - 1 . The study uses Higgs boson candidates produced mainly in gluon fusion or electroweak vector boson fusion at the LHC that subsequently decay to a pair of ? leptons. Matrix-element and machine-learning techniques were employed in a search for anomalous interactions. The results are combined with those from the four-lepton and two-photon decay channels to yield the most stringent constraints on anomalous Higgs boson couplings to date. The pure C P -odd scenario of the Higgs boson coupling to gluons is excluded at 2.4 standard deviations. The results are consistent with the standard model predictions. © 2023 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration
The emergence of Mediterraneanism discourse in modern Turkish architecture and the special position of Cengiz Bektaş
This article focuses on the emergence of the discourse on Mediterraneanism in Turkish architecture of mid-20th century in relation to the precedent discussions and works by European and American architects from the earlier decades. The former attempts of the modernist architects from Mediterranean countries in associating Mediterranean vernacular cultures with modernism and their basic motives are briefly discussed in the first part of the article to be able to portray the difference of the Turkish case. The emergence of the discourse of Mediterraneanism in mid-century Turkish architectural milieus is then discussed through some articles in the prominent journals of the period, underlining its relationship with the development of mass-tourism. Cengiz Bektaş is presented as a distinct and significant figure within this context who made extensive studies on Mediterranean vernacular cultures of Anatolia and had an original approach to the issue. Following the legacy of the Blue Anatolianists, Bektaş sees the Anatolian geography as a holistic cultural landscape and its vernacular architectures as the main sources of inspiration for contemporary architects, rather than pragmatic tools to fuel tourism industry. The article displays how his truly regionalist and contextualist approach to the Mediterranean differs from earlier and contemporary discourses in Turkey and stays closer to early 20th century precedents in Europe, through a reading of his original publications from the 1970s and later decades. © 2023, Istanbul Teknik Universitesi, Faculty of Architecture. Mechanical properties of vanadium-alloyed austempered ductile iron for crankshaft applications
This study focused on the development of austempered ductile iron (ADI) with desirable combination of mechanical properties for crankshaft applications by the combined effect of vanadium (V) alloying and an optimized heat treatment process. The produced unalloyed GGG60, 0.15% V-alloyed GGG60 (V-15), and 0.30% V-alloyed GGG60 samples were subjected to austenitizing at 900 & DEG;C for 1 h and subsequent austempering processes at 250, 300, and 350 & DEG;C for 15, 30, 60, 90, and 180 min. As a result of these austempering processes, different bainitic structures were obtained, which led to the formation of diverse combinations of mechanical properties. The mechanical properties of the austempered samples were tested comprehensively, and the results were correlated with their microstructures and the stability of the retained austenite phases. From the microstructural observations, the V-alloyed samples exhibited a finer microstructure and a more acicular ferrite phase than unalloyed samples. The V addition delayed the coarsening of the acicular ferrite structures and considerably contributed to the improvement of the mechanical properties of GGG60. Moreover, the X-ray diffraction results revealed that the retained austenite volume and the carbon enrichment of austenite phases in ADI samples were remarkably affected by the addition of vanadium. The increase in volume fraction of retained austenite and its carbon content provided favorable ductility and toughness to V-15, as confirmed by the elongation and impact test results. Consequently, the dual-phase ausferrite microstructure of V-15 that was austempered at 300 & DEG;C for 60 min exhibited high strength with substantial ductility and toughness for crankshaft applications
Negotiating power and relationship throughout marital life: narratives of middle-aged women from Turkey
Intersectional approaches call for the study of gender-power relations as dynamic processes shaped in the context of social structures and locations, and invite the representation of diverse voices. However, these ideas are yet to be fully embraced in empirical family and marriage research. The present study addresses this gap and employs a qualitative design to investigate women's accounts of the spousal relationship and marital power over their marital life cycles in a non-Western context, Turkey. Data comes from individual interviews with 24 middle-aged women who come from different socio-economic levels and reside in different parts of the country. The analysis was conducted in two steps. In the first step, an inductive thematic analysis revealed 4 main themes: (1) transition to marriage, (2) relating to domesticity, (3) negotiating marital power, and (4) emotional tone of marriage. In the second step, a deductive rereading of the data demonstrated variations among women's experiences depending mostly on the intersection of patriarchal tradition with their socio-economic realities, and partly on their geographical locations. Women's accounts pointed to diverse ways of negotiating marital relationship and power over time, including traditional accommodation, resistance/opposition, and sharing/mutual love. The study argues that an intersectional lens can provide new insights into women's agency, empowerment and increasing autonomy in marital relations.Koc University; Istanbul Bilgi University Scientific Research FundThis work was supported by Koc University Prof. Dr. Cigdem Kagitcibasi Human Development Research Award; Istanbul Bilgi University Scientific Research Fund
Experiences of civil society organizations working in the field of children on child participation in decision making processes
The main purpose of this thesis is determining what the non-governmental organizations (NGO) of the field of children do to bring child participation into practice in their internal functioning and activities, what processes they follow, and what possibilities and limitations they encounter in this particular case. For this purpose, three in-depth interviews were conducted with people who are working in the field of children in Mavi Kalem Association, Maya Foundation and Association for Supporting Tarlabaşı Community institutions, and these interviews were interpreted with a descriptive and systematic analysis method. In line with the themes obtained in the analysis, the bulletins, reports, guides and the institutions were examined and compared with the data in the interviews, areas that would allow for supportive and alternative explanations were determined. The findings were interpreted within the framework of the Lundy model, Roger Hart's ladder of participation model and the principles of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. It has been determined that NGOs working in the field of children mainly receive opinions from children on activities. As a result of this study, it was made the conclusion in some matters by interviewing three different organizations working in the field of children it has been determined that NGOs tend to get opinions from children about activities, they need more systematic and regular functioning feedback mechanisms, and the areas where children are involved from the beginning to the end of the decision-making processes are limited
Impact of Political Violence on People in Istanbul: The Role of Resilience in Posttraumatic Stress and Psychological Health
The study investigated the effects of political violence on people exposed to terrorist attacks in Istanbul between 2015 and 2016, and the role of resilience in both psychological stress and posttraumatic stress. The data was collected from 172 people using the Resilience Scale for Adults (RSA), General Health Questionnaire-12 (GHQ-12), and Traumatic Stress Symptoms Checklist (TSSC). Only 25.9% of the participants who were directly exposed to terrorist attacks and 13.8%who were exposed indirectly, had probable posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The frequency of probable PTSD was higher in participants who were present at the explosion area during the attack, provided either physical or emotional aid to a terror survivor, and who escaped from the attacks by chance. Perception of future and perception of self had a negative correlation with both TSSC PTSD scores and psychological stress scores. Perception of future, family coherence, perception of self, and social resources were negatively correlated with TSSC PTSD scores. In addition, perception of future and perception of self were negatively correlated with psychological stress scores. The psychological impact of ongoing exposure to violence is destructive; in a context of persistent violence, intervention strategies focused on resilience are essential for patient care
Home versus away: legitimizing and challenging home claims and social exclusion through football in Turkey
Claiming spaces as homes indexes hierarchies. I focus on the home/away (deplasman) binary in football (soccer) where through the case of Turkey, I show how affective football fandom layers the normative charge of home versus deplasman. Home attachments and away antagonisms are formed and solidified as fans connect emotionally to stadiums and to neighbourhoods. This carries over to the national scale when (footballing) home is conceptualized as homeland. The emotionality and power-laden implications of the home/away binary leads to (the acceptance of) social exclusion but this acceptance is challenged through the very spaces of football. I refer to migrant experiences in Istanbul and to the cases of stereotypically nationalist Trabzonspor and Kurdish Amedspor to offer a novel way to conceptualize exclusion vis-a-vis the emotionality of home/away. This article is based on over a decade of ethnographic research on football in Turkey including men's professional football, women's football, and migrant footballers.Middle East Research Competition; European Commission Erasmus + Sport Programme [622658-EPP-1-2020-1-TR-SPO-SCP]A part of this work was supported by the Middle East Research Competition; another part by the European Commission Erasmus + Sport Programme under Grant 622658-EPP-1-2020-1-TR-SPO-SCP
