ABSTRACT: The ongoing urban transformation projects in Istanbul have resulted in gentrification. The fast-paced transformation impacts everyday life whilst changing neighbourhoods. Balat, as one of the oldest mahalles in Istanbul, has been transforming under the influence of culture-led gentrification and has gradually become a popular spot for the creative class. Substantial literature on Istanbul informs us that in some areas night-life and the consumption of alcohol create a tension amongst the locals and the newcomers. Balat’s religious majority aligns well with the government’s conservative, post-secular values. This can appear in the forms of de-secularising businesses, choosing not to serve alcohol and avoiding night-time activity altogether. In other words, the form of consumption that is tolerated in Balat cannot be thought outside of Islam. The methods employed in the study of these night negotiations and the impact of post-sec-ularism in Balat consisted of observation conducted over 3 months as part of a micro-ethnography work undertaken during a PhD fieldwork. This paper will expand thinking about the parallel lives between the creative class and the locals in Balat where the night is being actively negotiated and the sense of belonging and community is being reconfigured by gentrification and post-secularism.ÖZET: İstanbul’da devam eden kentsel dönüşüm projeleri, soylulaştırma ile sonuçlanmıştır.

Elde edilen bulgular alanyazın doğrultusunda tartışılmıştır.ABSTRACT: In this study, it was aimed to investigate the mediating role of mentalization in the relationship between adult males' perceived father rejection and feelings of shame and guilt. It is aimed to investigate the role of father rejection in the presence of feelings of guilt and shame in the adult sample as well as in early life, childhood, adolescence and emerging adulthood. The sample of the study consisted of 50 male participants between the ages of 30-40. Initially, it was aimed to reach the sample that perceived high father rejection. However, since only 30% of the participants perceived high father rejection, it was decided to study the subject as acceptance-rejection. This explains the reason for the small sample size. Research data were collected online using Demographic Information Form, Adult Parent Acceptance-Rejection Scale, Guilt-Shame Scale and Mentalization Scale. Voluntary consent was obtained from all participants. As a result of Pearson correlation analysis, it was concluded that there was no relationship between father rejection and feelings of shame and guilt. Due to this finding, the possible mediating role of mentalization could not be examined. However, there was a significant negative correlation between shame and the self, which is the sub-dimension of mentalization. On the other hand, a positive and significant relationship was found between shame and motivation, which is another sub-dimension of mentalization. It was concluded that there is a positive and significant relationship between guilt and motivation and mentalization which is the sub-dimension of mentalization

Self-construals predict personal life satisfaction with different strengths across societal contexts differing in national wealth and religious heritage

We explore to what extent previously observed pan-cultural association between dimensions of self-construal and personal life satisfaction (PLS) may be moderated by three national-contextual variables: national wealth, economic inequality, and religious heritage. The results showed that Self-reliance (vs. dependence on others) predicted PLS positively in poorer countries but negatively in richer countries. Connectedness to others (vs. self-containment) predicted PLS more strongly in Protestant-heritage countries. Self-expression (vs. harmony) predicted PLS more weakly (and non-significantly) in Muslim-heritage countries. In contrast, previously reported associations of self-direction (vs. reception-to-influence), consistency (vs. variability), and decontextualized (vs. contextualized) self-understanding with personal life satisfaction were not significantly moderated by these aspects of societal context. These results show the importance of considering the impact of national religious and economic context

Measurements of differential cross sections of Higgs boson production through gluon fusion in the H ? WW *? e??? final state at ?s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    Get PDF
Higgs boson production via gluon-gluon fusion is measured in the WW *-> e nu mu nu decay channel. The dataset utilized corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb(-1) collected by the ATLAS detector from root s = 13TeV proton-proton collisions delivered by the Large Hadron Collider between 2015 and 2018. Differential cross sections are measured in a fiducial phase space restricted to the production of at most one additional jet. The results are consistent with Standard Model expectations, derived using different Monte Carlo generators

INVESTIGATION OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY, SLEEP QUALITY, ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION LEVELS AMONG EXERCISER AND NON-EXERCISER ADULTS IN THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC

    Get PDF
Purpose: To assess physical activity (PA), perceived exercise benefits, perceived sleep quality, anxiety and depression levels of adults who exercised and did not exercise during the pandemic. Methods: 1226 voluntary participants who lived in the community (age range 18-55 years) were included in this cross-sectional study. Demographic information was recorded, and exercise motivators and barriers were evaluated through questions prepared by the researchers. PA levels [International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form (IPAQ-SF)], perception about the benefits of exercise [Exercise Benefits and Barriers Scale-Benefits Subscale (EBBS-BS)], sleep quality [Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI)], and anxiety and depression levels [Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS)] were assessed. Results: There were statistically significant differences in scores of IPAQ-SF, PSQI, EBBS-BS, and HADS between those who did and did not exercise (p<0.001). Fifty-two percent of the participants had low PA levels during the pandemic. It was found that the main motivating factor of exercise was to improve performance and/or strength (81.54%), and the main barrier was preferring to do other things (lack of motivation) (84.8%).Conclusion: Those with low PA levels have worse anxiety, depression, and poor sleep quality. Knowing the motivators and barriers of PA can guide the determination of intervention and prevention strategies

Comments on wave-induced behavior of a coastal mud

    No full text
The need for the prediction of phenomenal attenuation of sea waves as they approach mud-laden shores has led over the past decades to both analytic and numerical modeling of wave-mud coupling. A feature common to most analyses has been the use of canonical relationships relating stress to strain in mud, with time-independent coefficients in site-specific cases. For cohesive mud from the Atchafalaya River Delta along the Gulf of Mexico coast of Louisiana, laboratory work is described using a rheometer and a wave flume to highlight short-term and long-term responses of elastoviscoplastic mud to waves. Short-term may amount to perhaps no more than a few minutes, whereas tens of minutes or longer may be characterized as long term. For short-term response, a simple physical framework is used with rheometric data in preference to a mechanistic model to estimate the thickness of the dissipative mud layer formed by waves, an important parameter commonly deduced by model tuning against measured wave attenuation. In the long-term, characteristically time-dependent rheological parameters have an asymmetric, thixotropic response to the imposition and relaxation of stress. As the thixotropic timescale is commensurate with coastal storms, interpretation of wave attenuation predicted from short-term modeling must be treated with caution in prototype application

Design of Cloud-Based Real-Time Eye-Tracking Monitoring and Storage System

    Get PDF
The rapid development of technology has led to the implementation of data-driven systems whose performance heavily relies on the amount and type of data. In the latest decades, in the field of bioengineering data management, among others, eye-tracking data have become one of the most interesting and essential components for many medical, psychological, and engineering research applications. However, despite the large usage of eye-tracking data in many studies and applications, a strong gap is still present in the literature regarding real-time data collection and management, which leads to strong constraints for the reliability and accuracy of on-time results. To address this gap, this study aims to introduce a system that enables the collection, processing, real-time streaming, and storage of eye-tracking data. The system was developed using the Java programming language, WebSocket protocol, and Representational State Transfer (REST), improving the efficiency in transferring and managing eye-tracking data. The results were computed in two test conditions, i.e., local and online scenarios, within a time window of 100 seconds. The experiments conducted for this study were carried out by comparing the time delay between two different scenarios, even if preliminary results showed a significantly improved performance of data management systems in managing real-time data transfer. Overall, this system can significantly benefit the research community by providing real-time data transfer and storing the data, enabling more extensive studies using eye-tracking data
