How can we use children’s books about refugees in education: a proposal for a pedagogical framework
The number of children’s books about refugees has recently increased in Turkey. Some of these books have been translated from different languages, some of them have been published in Turkish. These books are used by teachers for educational purposes to handle the refugee issue in their classes. Yet, the number of pedagogical sources discussing how to use these books in the classroom is very limited in the Turkish context. Academic research usually focuses on the analysis of stories or representation of refugees. This paper aims to present a conceptual framework for using these books for educational purposes. The paper underlines the importance of norm-critical approach rather than adopting a pedagogy that emphasizes the deficiency or difference of refugees
A novel interval valued circular intuitionistic fuzzy AHP methodology: Application in digital transformation project selection
Since its first introduction, ordinary fuzzy sets have been extended to new types of fuzzy sets as a tool of artificial intelligence techniques. One of the recently introduced fuzzy sets, Circular Intuitionistic Fuzzy (CIF) sets enable us to take into account instability of the membership and non-membership degrees with a circular area & its radius. In this study, we first introduce Interval Valued CIF (IVCIF) sets and their arithmetic operations to better incorporate the uncertainty and cover a broader domain. Then, we introduce a novel IVCIF Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method and apply it to evaluate Digital Transformation (DT) projects with complex nature. DT projects requiring fundamental changes in processes, business models and cultures of the com-panies, contribute a significant value to the companies and increase their market shares; so that they can achieve long term success and competitive advantage. On the other hand, DT problems which are usually ill-defined and include incomplete information based on human judgments, necessitate fuzzy representation. For the success of a digital transformation and to contribute excellence in engineering applications, DT projects should be carefully analyzed. For these rea-sons, we focus on DT project evaluation problem in application. Also, sensitivity & comparative analyses are performed
A Lived-in Shape Grammar: Parsing the Dwelling Activities in a Modernist Residential Building in Algiers
Residents of a building transform it over time and play crucial roles in making its life cycles sustainable. Introducing formal methods to study the impact of residents' modifications in existing structures, we analyze Climat de France, a modern housing project in Algeria. Observing the distinction of designed and in-use contexts, we consider the building as it was once intended and as it is now lived in. We parse the south-west facade and define a shape grammar that consists of rules that represent and categorize the changes dwellers made on the original facade over time. We discuss residents' modifications as tools of autonomy and outcomes of territorial struggles. Findings are both expected and unexpected, such as the issues of climate control and the patterns of knowledge exchange, respectively. The study interweaves some of the social and physical dynamics that trigger and shape the residents' modifications, pointing out that shape grammars may be utilized to analyze the informal adaptations of a space by its users
Breach of Proper Notice Regarding Arbitrator Appointment or Arbitration Proceedings as Grounds for Refusal of Enforcement Under the New York Convention
The right to be heard is a fundamental right granted to parties in arbitration proceedings, and a requirement of the right to be heard is that the parties must be adequately and timely informed about the appointment of the arbitrator and the arbitral proceedings. Proper notice ensures the implementation of the right to be heard in arbitration. Thus, notice directly affects the validity and enforcement of arbitral awards. Article V(1)(b) of the United Nations (UN) Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards (New York Convention; UN, June 10, 1958) provides that recognition or enforcement of an award may be refused if the party against whom the award is invoked was not given proper notice of the appointment of the arbitrator or the arbitration proceedings. This study examines what should be understood from the concept of proper notice under Article V(1)(b) of the New York Convention and how this concept is elaborated upon in the practice of arbitration. The study in this respect first discusses the right to be heard in arbitration and the relationship between this right and proper notice. The study then goes on to evaluate the elements required for a notice to be deemed proper. Subsequently, the article examines the issues related to the application of Article V(1)(b) of the New York Convention, such as applicable law and burden of proof, and finishes up with the conclusion. The facts that notices in arbitration proceedings are not made by official means and that the methods in international agreements are not applied do not cause a notice to be deemed improper. Moreover, not every breach or deficiency in presenting a notice will result in a refusal to enforce an award under Article V(1)(b) of the New York Convention. Under Article V(1)(b) of the New York Convention, objections regarding violations of the right to be heard due to a lack of proper notice should be interpreted narrowly and should be of a nature that may affect the outcome of the arbitration proceedings. Finally, even if the content of the notice is not written on the tracking documents a courier company issues, these documents should be deemed sufficient to prove that a notice has been made. If the respondent claims that the notices made by cargo or courier are unrelated to the arbitration proceedings, the respondent needs to prove this.
The effect of postgraduate training in smoking cessation care on the clinical practice of pulmonologists
Introduction: Many studies have shown that training in smoking cessation care (SCC) is important for increasing the number and quality of delivered interventions by health professionals, and various training methods are available. The study aimed to identify the relationship between receiving training on SCC and the frequency of providing outpatient-based SCC among pulmonologists who were members of the Turkish Thoracic Society (TTS). Methods: For this cross-sectional study, a self-administered online questionnairebased survey was conducted on a group of active pulmonologists who were members of the TTS, between April and October 2019. The survey included questions about demographics, smoking status, participation in SCC training, and providing outpatient-based SCC. Results: A total of 199 (53%) pulmonologists were actively taking part in outpatientbased SCC. Compared to those that were not providing outpatient-based SCC, median age, median time since graduation, and the number of non-academics, non-current smokers and recipients of smoking cessation care training were significantly higher in the group providing outpatient-based SCC (p<0.001, p<0.001, p=0.002, p=0.001, respectively). It was observed that having SCC training increased more than 6-fold the likelihood of providing outpatient-based SCC (AOR=6.45; 95% CI: 3.96–10.49; p<0.001). Conclusions: The most crucial obstacle in providing smoking cessation is healthcare workers not providing smoking cessation to smokers. It is worthwhile to devote more tasks and resources to training physicians on smoking cessation care since this may increase their effective involvement in tobacco cessation
Cross-Cultural Validity of the Consideration of Future Consequences Scale (CFCS-14): A Study on Turkish University Students
The subjective perception of time, known as time orientation, plays a role in shaping a wide range of health-related behaviors. A popular measure of time orientation is the Consideration of Future Consequences Scale (CFCS-14), which has two dimensions: immediate and future. Although widely used in individualistic societies, the usage of this scale, particularly in collectivist cultures, is limited, creating a gap in understanding the cross-cultural implications of temporal orientation on health behaviors. We translated the CFCS-14 into Turkish and examined its psychometric properties and practical utility within the context of health behaviors. A total of 589 undergraduates completed a survey, consisting of the Turkish version of CFCS-14 and measures of time perspective, sensation-seeking, autonomous-related self, subjective well-being, positive and negative affect, problematic alcohol use, and smoking. Both exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses provided evidence for the existence of two correlated factors. CFC factor scores showed robust links with problematic alcohol use, daily cigarette consumption, sensation-seeking, and autonomous-relatedness. However, correlations with subjective well-being and affect were weaker and statistically non-significant. These findings underscore the cross-cultural applicability of CFCS-14's structure, validity, and reliability. This research contributes to the broader understanding of time orientation theories and their practical implications in diverse cultural settings
Search for light Higgs bosons from supersymmetric cascade decays in pp collisions at ?s=13TeV
A search is reported for pairs of light Higgs bosons (H-1) produced in supersymmetric cascade decays in final states with small missing transverse momentum. A data set of LHC pp collisions collected with the CMS detector at root s = 13 TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb(-1) is used. The search targets events where both H-1 bosons decay into b (b) over bar pairs that are reconstructed as large-radius jets using substructure techniques. No evidence is found for an excess of events beyond the background expectations of the standard model (SM). Results from the search are interpreted in the next-to-minimal supersymmetric extension of the SM, where a "singlino" of small mass leads to squark and gluino cascade decays that can predominantly end in a highly Lorentz-boosted singlet-like H-1 and a singlino-like neutralino of small transversemomentum. Upper limits are set on the product of the squark or gluino pair production cross section and the square of the b (b) over bar branching fraction of the H1 in a benchmark model containing almost mass-degenerate gluinos and light-flavour squarks. Under the assumption of an SM-like H-1 -> b (b) over bar branching fraction, H-1 bosons with masses in the range 40-120 GeVarising from the decays of squarks or gluinos with a mass of 1200-2500 GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level
Cultural Venues in the Age of Compost: Karşı Sanat and Kültürhane
ÖZET: Bu makale kompost çağı olarak tarif ettiğimiz çağda çeşitlilik, dolanıklık ve döngüsellik vaat eden toplulukların rolüne odaklanıyor. Böylesi toplulukların ortaya çıkmasında sanatın gücünü de yanına da alarak kendi ritüellerini oluşturan kültür mekânlarının rolünü İstanbul ve Mersin’den iki oluşumu, Karşı Sanat ve Kültürhane’yi tartışarak teşhis etmeye çalışıyor. Kompost çağının onarımı için kültürü merkezine alarak sürekli pratiklerini ritüelleştirebilen mekânların; farklılıklar içeren, bu farklılıkları birbirine dolanıklaştırabilen ve bir döngüsellik tesis edebilen paylaşım değeri merkezli topluluklar oluşturabildikleri fikri makalenin temel savını oluşturuyor.ABSTRACT: This article focuses on the role of communities that promise diversity, entanglement and circularity in what we describe as the age of compost. It tries to diagnose the role of cultural spaces that create their own rituals by taking the power of art with them in the emergence of such communities by discussing two organizations from Istanbul and Mersin, Karşı Sanat and Kültürhane. The main argument of the article is that spaces that can ritualize their continuous practices by putting culture at the center for the repair of the compost age can create communities centered on shared value that contain differences, entangle these differences and establish a circularity
Search for Higgs boson decays to a Z boson and a photon in proton-proton collisions at ?s = 13 TeV
Results are presented from a search for the Higgs boson decay H ? Z?, where Z ? ?+?? with ? = e or ?. The search is performed using a sample of proton-proton (pp) collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb?1. Events are assigned to mutually exclusive categories, which exploit differences in both event topology and kinematics of distinct Higgs production mechanisms to enhance signal sensitivity. The signal strength ?, defined as the product of the cross section and the branching fraction ?pp?HBH?Z? relative to the standard model prediction, is extracted from a simultaneous fit to the ?+??? invariant mass distributions in all categories and is measured to be ? = 2.4 ± 0.9 for a Higgs boson mass of 125.38 GeV. The statistical significance of the observed excess of events is 2.7 standard deviations. This measurement corresponds to ?pp?HBH?Z?=0.21±0.08 pb. The observed (expected) upper limit at 95% confidence level on ? is 4.1 (1.8), where the expected limit is calculated under the background-only hypothesis. The ratio of branching fractions BH?Z?/BH??? is measured to be 1.5?0.6+0.7, which agrees with the standard model prediction of 0.69 ± 0.04 at the 1.5 standard deviation level. © The Author(s) 2023
