PSYCHOLOGICAL WELL-BEING AMONG FEMALE EMERGING ADULTS AS A FUNCTION OF PARENTAL AUTONOMY SUPPORT
The current study examined female emerging adult well-being as a function of parental autonomy support in Turkey. The conceptualization of well-being included measures of vitality, stress, depression, and anxiety, while autonomy support was measured for both mothers and fathers. A nonrandom convenience sampling method was used and generated a sample of 140 participants. Analyses included multiple regression and t-tests. Significance was set at p = .05, and corresponding effect sizes were reported. Results of quantitative analyses indicated that parental autonomy support predicted well-being across all components. Father autonomy support exhibited a negative relationship with outcome measures, with mother autonomy support relating positively. The findings of the current study are contextualized within Turkish family culture, and suggestions for future research are discussed
This thesis is first and foremost about Bartleby of Herman Melville's story "Bartleby the Scrivener". For Giorgio Agamben, Bartleby is neither an ordinary scrivener nor an ordinary literary character; by ceasing to copy and write, he becomes the ultimate example of the notion potentiality-not-to. Tracing back the metaphysical term potentiality to Aristotle, the thesis examines Agamben's concepts of potentiality and impotentiality within the specific context of Bartleby the Scrivener. Do all potentialities lead to actions? On a philosophical basis, how can we deal with the potentiality of a being who "would prefer not to act"? And what would his ontological position be? While providing unique answers to such questions, Agamben's thorough and profound discussion of Bartleby reveals a rich potentiality itself: it calls attention to ethics, authenticity, causality and creation, among many other concepts. And it leaves us with the following question: What does Bartleby save himself from and on what ontological ground does he exist through "writing his potentiality not-to write" in Agamben's terms? By pointing out specific connections between the aforementioned philosophical notions through Agamben's interpretation of Bartleby, the thesis invites the readers to re-evaluate their conceptualizations around the potentiality of Creation itself and rethink the potential states of "living" a creature can adopt
TNFRSF13B VARIANTS ACT AS MODIFIERS TO CLINICAL PHENOTYPES IN COMMON VARIABLE IMMUNE DEFICIENCY DISORDERS
Global veritabanlarına kıyasla on üç varyantın en az on kat artmış alel frekanslarına sahip olduğu bulundu. Objective: The TNF receptor gene 13B (TNFSRF13B) is a member of the TNF superfamily which is crucial for B cell maturation, plasma cell differentiation, and antibody response. Impaired expression of the TNFRSF13B gene is associated with common variable immune deficiency (CVID), autoimmunity, and lymphoproliferation disorders. Besides the disease-causing variants of this gene, its different isoforms are associated with strong and weak TNFRSF13B expression that leads to an unbalanced B cell response. Materials and Methods: The study detected 26 variants (three synonymous, five missenses, eleven UTR, and seven intronic variants) in the TNFRSF13B gene by screening 68 CVID patients with targeted next generation sequencing. An integrative bioinformatics approach was utilized to provide a plausible explanation for CVID associations from different perspectives and to investigate the associations from the clinical findings. Results: Fifty-eight percent (15/26) of the detected variants were altered regulatory elements, such as transcription factor binding, miRNA binding sites, splice site regions or the thermodynamic impact on protein. We observed that patients who suffered from the potential splicing variants had significantly low IgA levels (p=0.009), autoimmunity (p=0.02) and gastrointestinal findings (p=0.05). In addition, the c.*79A>G 3-UTR variant was found with the low IgA and IgE levels. Thirteen variants found to have at least tenfold increased allele frequencies as compared to global databases indicating that the TNFRSF13B variants, which have a potential regulatory effect, are more common in CVID patients. Conclusions: All findings suggested that these variants may not be the causative variant for the CVID phenotype but the unbalanced TNFRSF13B alternative splices could contribute to the pathogenesis of patients independent from the underlying genetic background of CVID.Istanbul University Cerrahpasa Research Fun
Eşitsizlikler çağında açlık, gıda güvensizliği ve yetersiz beslenmeyi yeniden düşünmek
ABSTRACT: Due to extreme climate events, the Covid-19 global pandemic, the war in Ukraine, and a rapid increase in the food prices 3.1 billion people were unable have access to nutritious food in 2022. Global inequalities, poverty, and social insecurities that disseminated in almost every aspect of human life have already started to challenge the social contract. As a minimum requirement to guarantee a decent life for everyone, a new social contract based on mutual obligations of concentric circles may be imagined for food security. Such a contract may offera solid framework to encounter the current agrifood system’s fragilities and vulnerabilities. This study argues that a new social contract should redefine relations between the state and private sector, considering the well-being of all segments of society and, in a broader sense, humanity. Secondly, it emphasizes the necessity of reforming rules, norms, principles, and decision-making procedures to eliminate the double standards of the global trade system. Lastly, it claims that rather than falling back into the industrial agriculture production trap, “what we owe each other” is to adopt collectively resilient, sustainable, and equitable policies to eliminate hunger, food insecurity, and malnutrition.ÖZET: İklim değişikliği nedeniyle ortaya çıkan şiddetli hava olayları, Covid-19 küresel salgını, Ukrayna’da savaş ve temel gıda fiyatlarının hızla artması, 2022 yılında 3,1 milyar insanı sağlıklı gıdayı karşılayamaz hale getirmiştir.
Addictive smartphone use in the elderly: relationship with depression, anxiety and sleep quality
Background The aim of the present study was to explore the relationship between addictive smartphone use (ASU) and depressive symptoms, anxiety and sleep quality in elderly adults. Methods The study sample included smartphone users over the age of 65 years. The research data were obtained from social networking sites via a Google survey link. In addition to filling out a sociodemographic data form, the participants were also assessed with Smartphone Addiction Scale (SAS), Geriatric Depression Scale, Beck Anxiety Inventory and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index tools. Results The correlation analysis revealed the SAS score to be positively correlated with depression and anxiety, and negatively correlated with sleep quality. In the regression analysis, depressive symptoms, anxiety level and sleep quality were all found to have an effect on the SAS total score. Furthermore, the SAS score was found to have an effect on depressive symptoms, anxiety and sleep quality. Conclusions Our findings reveal a bidirectional relationship between ASU and depressive, anxiety symptoms and impaired sleep quality in elderly adults. It is important to question smartphone use patterns in people with sleep problems, symptoms of depression or anxiety

ABSTRACT: This thesis is about the approaches of the left in Turkey on the Armenian question between the years of 1961 and 1972. The Armenian question is the question between Turkey and the Armenians who define the adverse events which they lived in 1915 in the Ottoman Empire as a genocide. Turkey rejects the claim of genocide about these events. In this thesis, I analyze the approaches of the left in Turkey, the socialist parties and factions in Turkey between 1961 and 1972, on the events that the Armenians in the Ottoman Empire lived in 1915. For this thesis, I researched primarily the left magazines published in Turkey between the years of 1961 and 1972. I benefited also from the memory books about this period. I began to research from the magazine Yön that began to be published in 1961 and the Workers’ Party of Turkey (TİP) founded in same year. I continued with the factions of TİP and their magazines. Finally, I researched the views of the armed organizations which were originated from the Revolutionary Youth Federation of Turkey (Dev-Genç) from their defences in the courts and the articles of their leaders. From these sources, I found what then left in Turkey said about the events that the Armenians lived in the Ottoman Empire in 1915 and analyzed their discourses. As a result, I observed that until TKP/ML which founded in 1972, there is no organization recognized the Armenian massacre and claimed that a genocide happened in Turkey and Turkish nationalism has a dominance in the left of Turkey.ÖZET: Bu tez 1961 ve 1972 yılları arasındaki Türkiye solunun Ermeni sorununa yaklaşımları üzerinedir. TİP’in fraksiyonları ve onların dergileriyle devam ettim.
Observation of electroweak production of two jets and a Z-boson pair
Electroweak symmetry breaking explains the origin of the masses of elementary particles through their interactions with the Higgs field. Besides the measurements of the Higgs boson properties, the study of the scattering of massive vector bosons with spin 1 allows the nature of electroweak symmetry breaking to be probed. Among all processes related to vector-boson scattering, the electroweak production of two jets and a Z-boson pair is a rare and important one. Here we report the observation of this process from proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139fb(-1) recorded at a centre-of-mass energy of 13TeV with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. We consider two different final states originating from the decays of the Z-boson pair: one containing four charged leptons and another containing two charged leptons and two neutrinos. The hypothesis of no electroweak production is rejected with a statistical significance of 5.7 sigma, and the measured cross-section for electroweak production is consistent with the Standard Model prediction. In addition, we report cross-sections for inclusive production of a Z-boson pair and two jets for the two final states
Feature selection optimization with filtering and wrapper methods: two disease classification cases
Discarding the less informative and redundant features helps to reduce the time required to train a learning algorithm and the amount of storage required, improving the learning accuracy as well as the quality of results. In this study, we present different feature selection approaches to address the problem of disease classification based on the Parkinson and Cardiac Arrhythmia datasets. For this purpose, first we utilize three filtering algorithms including the Pearson correlation coefficient, Spearman correlation coefficient, and relief. Second, metaheuristic algorithms are compared to find the most informative subset of the features to obtain better classification accuracy. As a final method, a hybrid model involving filtering algorithms is applied to the datasets to eliminate half of the features, and then a metaheuristic algorithm based on a proposed genetic algorithm is applied to the rest of the datasets. With all three methods, we use three classification algorithms: support vector machine, K-nearest neighbor, and random forest. The results show that the best scores are obtained from the metaheuristic algorithm based on the proposed genetic algorithm for both datasets. This comparative study contributes to the literature by increasing the accuracy of classification for both datasets and presenting a hybrid model with filtering and a metaheuristic algorithm
Digital news media as a social resilience proxy: A computational political economy perspective
This article investigates how the COVID-19 pandemic was framed in public, private and non-profit media production. It conceptualises digital news as an indicator of social resilience and the interaction between social and biological/natural systems. We analysed news articles published in 2020/2021 on 21 Croatian websites using natural language processing. We collected 985,850 articles and manually coded samples to train different classifiers. The first classifier was developed to determine which articles relate to COVID-19. The second classifier was used for articles' topic classification; the third classifier was used to classify articles into resilience classes. A limited discussion of transformative (long-term) resilience, especially in private media, contributed to the most significant content share. The debate focused on keeping the status quo through coping or returning to pre-pandemic conditions through adaptive mechanisms. The news media contributed to how public issues were framed and how science and scientific research were discussed.Croatian Science Foundation (HRZZ) research project The Social Resilience of Croatian Society in the Midst and Aftermath of the COVID-19 Pandemic [IP-CORONA-2020-04]The author(s) disclosed receipt of the following financial support for the research, authorship and/or publication of this article: This research was funded by the Croatian Science Foundation (HRZZ) research project The Social Resilience of Croatian Society in the Midst and Aftermath of the COVID-19 Pandemic (IP-CORONA-2020-04)
