Reconstruction of decays to merged photons using end-to-end deep learning with domain continuation in the CMS detector
A novel technique based on machine learning is introduced to reconstruct the decays of highly Lorentz boosted particles. Using an end-to-end deep learning strategy, the technique bypasses existing rule-based particle reconstruction methods typically used in high energy physics analyses. It uses minimally processed detector data as input and directly outputs particle properties of interest. The new technique is demonstrated for the reconstruction of the invariant mass of particles decaying in the CMS detector. The decay of a hypothetical scalar particle A into two photons, A gamma gamma, is chosen as a benchmark decay. Lorentz boosts gamma L 1/4 60-600 are considered, ranging from regimes where both photons are resolved to those where the photons are closely merged as one object. A training method using domain continuation is introduced, enabling the invariant mass reconstruction of unresolved photon pairs in a novel way. The new technique is validated using pi 0 gamma gamma decays in LHC collision data
More Alike than Different: a qualitative exploration of the relational experiences of multicultural couples in Turkey
In this study, multicultural couples' experience of the impact of culture on their romantic relationships was explored. The sample included eight heterosexual couples cohabiting or married for at least 6 months, and who differed in ethnicity, religion, and native language. Women were from Turkey and men were from Germany, Greece, United Kingdom, France, Italy, Spain, and Chile, with ages ranging from 22 to 43. The semi-structured in-depth interviews generated data about the cultural differences participants observed about their partners and how those differences affect the romantic relationship. The thematic analysis revealed three major themes: More Alike Than Different; The Difference Is In The Cultures, Not In The Relationship, and There Is More Room For Growth. Although the couples had cultural differences regarding social and familial structures, they emphasized the similarities which kept them together, and engaged in understanding and empathic communication which helped them overcome the cultural differences. The study also provided information that might help practitioners working with multicultural couples. The findings are discussed in the context of the literature on similarity and compatibility, and limitations and suggestions for further studies are presented. Lay summary This study explored the role of culture on the relationship dynamics of eight heterosexual couples, women from Turkey, and their male partners from different countries. Interviews showed that the partners in these relationships expressed feeling more similar with each other than different, and that they engaged in empathic communication which enhanced marital satisfaction. Results have implications for practitioners working with multicultural couples
Development of Acoustic and Thermal Insulation Materials from Pantyhose Waste
Population growth, urbanization, industrialization, developing technology, increasing welfare level and changing consumption habits cause solid wastes to increase day by day. There are also sub-waste groups that have not yet been fully recognized among the solid waste groups in which textile wastes have a large share. One of them is pantyhose, which has been indispensable for modern life since the day it was presented to the consumer. These socks, which are made of polyamide and elastane fibers that are easily punctured, run and become unusable when worn once or several times, are generally thrown away after use. These pantyhose wastes, which are not biodegradable due to their raw materials, also pose an environmental risk. Within the scope of the study, thermal and sound insulation properties of carded and needle-punched pantyhose wastes are investigated. The results show that the thermal and acoustic properties of the developed material are at a sufficient level, and it has ensured that polyamide wastes, which have superior properties among thermoplastic polymers and have high economic value, are brought back into the economy. © 2023 Trans Tech Publications Ltd, Switzerland.Istanbul Teknik Üniversitesi, IT, (43672
May robots be held responsible for service failure and recovery? The role of robot service provider agents' human-likeness
This research investigates how consumers attribute service failure and recovery responsibilities and respond to them differently based on the service provider agent type (human, humanoid, and non-humanoid robot). Two experiments show that, first, consumers attribute more service failure responsibility to the firm when the agent is less human-like. Second, they attribute more recovery responsibility to the agent and less to the firm when those agents are human, rather than robots. Third, failure (recovery) attribution to the firm reduces (enhances) consumer forgiveness and satisfaction. Feminist şehirciliği Türkiye’deki planlama eğitimi içinde konumlandırmak: bir manifesto hazırlığı
ABSTRACT: The authors of this paper - all women and early-career researchers - address the place of feminist perspective within planning education. This positioning is revealed through ‘dilemmas’ and ‘epiphanies1’ in the authors’ experiences by employing an autoethnographic perspective. In the quest to create gender-equal urban areas, the study explores what planning education and teaching & practice experiences can offer to accommodate feminist insights. And it uncovers challenges and potentials in creating competence on feminist urbanism in planning, through rigorous analysis of personalized narratives. We anticipate our research to act as a pre-manifesto to provoke ‘planning’ audiences for the upswing in inclusive urban planning.ÖZET: Kariyerinin başındaki araştırmacılardan oluşan kadın yazarların ele aldığı bu makalede feminist şehirciliğin kent planlama eğitimindeki yeri incelenmektedir. Bu konumlandırma, otoetnografik bir bakış açısı kullanılarak yazarların deneyimlerindeki ‘ikilemler’ ve ‘aydınlanma anları (epifaniler)’ aracılığıyla yapılmaktadır. Çalışma, toplumsal cinsiyet eşitliğine sahip kentsel alanlar yaratma arayışında, planlama eğitim, öğretim ve uygulama deneyimlerinin feminist içgörüleri barındırmak için neler sunabileceğini araştırmaktadır. Combination of searches for invisible decays of the Higgs boson using 139 fb-1 of proton-proton collision data at & RADIC;s=13 TeV collected with the ATLAS experiment
Many extensions of the Standard Model predict the production of dark matter particles at the LHC. Sufficiently light dark matter particles may be produced in decays of the Higgs boson that would appear invisible to the detector. This Letter presents a statistical combination of searches for H & RARR; invisible decays where multiple production modes of the Standard Model Higgs boson are considered. These searches are performed with the ATLAS detector using 139 fb-1 of proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of & RADIC;s = 13 TeV at the LHC. In combination with the results at & RADIC;s = 7 TeV and 8 TeV, an upper limit on the H & RARR; invisible branching ratio of 0.107 (0.077) at the 95% confidence level is observed (expected). These results are also interpreted in the context of models where the 125 GeV Higgs boson acts as a portal to dark matter, and limits are set on the scattering cross-section of weakly interacting massive particles and nucleons. & COPY; 2023 The Author(s). Search for resonant and non-resonant Higgs boson pair production in the bb?+?- decay channel using 13TeV pp collision data from the ATLAS detector
A search for Higgs boson pair production in events with two b-jets and two tau -leptons is presented, using a proton-proton collision dataset with an integrated luminosity of 139 fb(-1) collected at root s = 13TeV by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. Higgs boson pairs produced non-resonantly or in the decay of a narrow scalar resonance in the mass range from 251 to 1600 GeV are targeted. Events in which at least one tau-lepton decays hadronically are considered, and multivariate discriminants are used to reject the backgrounds. No significant excess of events above the expected background is observed in the non-resonant search. The largest excess in the resonant search is observed at a resonance mass of 1 TeV, with a local (global) significance of 3.1 sigma (2.0 sigma). Observed (expected) 95% confidence-level upper limits are set on the non-resonant Higgs boson pair-production cross-section at 4.7 (3.9) times the Standard Model prediction, assuming Standard Model kinematics, and on the resonant Higgs boson pair-production cross-section at between 21 and 900 fb (12 and 840 fb), depending on the mass of the narrow scalar resonance
Recognizing handwritten digits using spiking neural networks with learning algorithms based on sliding mode control theory
In this paper, a spiking neural network (SNN) has been proposed for recognizing the digits written on the LCD screen of an experimental setup. The convergence of the learning algorithm has been ensured by using sliding mode control (SMC) theory and the Lyapunov stability method for the adaptation of the network parameters. The spike response model (SRM) has been utilized in the design of the SNN. The performance of the proposed learning scheme has been evaluated both on the experimental data and on the MNIST dataset. The simulated and experimental results of the SNN structure have been compared with the responses of a conventional neural network (ANN) for which the weight update rules have been also derived using SMC theory. The conducted simulations and experimental studies reveal that convergence can be ensured for the proposed learning scheme and the SNN yields higher recognition accuracy compared to a conventional ANN
