Left in the Dark: Regimes of Affect and Political Passivity in Kazuo Ishiguro's the Remains of the Day
No full textIn one of the latest commentaries on Kazuo Ishiguro's novel The Remains of the Day (1989), it is explained that the novel's protagonist Stevens is a true monster who has embraced antisemitism and fascism throughout his career and it is also underlined that although there is no question about Stevens's emotional repression horizontal ellipsis this trait has little to do with his racism and refusal to intervene morally in Darlington's household. The present paper aims to offer an alternative reading of the political agency and passivity of the novel's protagonist Stevens with the help of affect theory. This paper will read The Remains of the Day and its protagonist primarily by looking at their relationship with sense reception, motion, and emotion, and show that the apathy and affective restraint experienced by Stevens as an English butler underlies his political passivity. Such a reading will also enable the readers to perceive Ishiguro's work as a hopeful narrative affirming the power of affect in the matters of political emancipation and agency
Measurement of the mass dependence of the transverse momentum of lepton pairs in Drell-Yan production in proton-proton collisions at ?s=13TeV
Get PDF\The double differential cross sections of the Drell-Yan lepton pair (l(+)l(-), dielectron or dimuon) production are measured as functions of the invariant mass m(ll), transverse momentum p(T)(ll), and phi(eta)*. The phi(eta)* observable, derived from angular measurements of the leptons and highly correlated with p(T)(ll), is used to probe the low-p(T)(ll) region in a complementary way. Dilepton masses up to 1 TeV are investigated. Additionally, a measurement is performed requiring at least one jet in the final state. To benefit from partial cancellation of the systematic uncertainty, the ratios of the differential cross sections for various m(ll) ranges to those in the Zmass peak interval are presented. The collected data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 36.3 fb(-1) of proton-proton collisions recorded with the CMS detector at theLHCat a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. Measurements are compared with predictions based on perturbative quantum chromodynamics, including soft-gluon resummation
Tracing Cultural Change in Turkey's Experience of Democratization: Unexpected Dialogues on Intolerance
No full textDoes democracy require an agreement on specific foundational values? Bringing insights from Turkey to the study of democratization, this book argues that democracy may rather be about acknowledging the disagreement over values before negotiating over other concerns, such as rights, freedoms, capabilities, and duties. It explores this idea by examining three landscapes of culture in Turkey, which have been the subjects of persistent stories regarding the unequal relationship between the self and the other. These include LGBT visibility and the entertainment sector, women and clothing, and Alevism and funerals. Through these case studies, the book analyses the remaking of (in)tolerance through the integration of LGBT representations into broader political struggles over values, the assertion of women’s rights and freedoms from traditional values surrounding dress, and the conflict between essentialist intolerance and the syncretic traditions of Alevi identity. Bringing these landscapes together with the surrounding cultural tensions in Turkey and the West, Tracing Cultural Change in Turkey's Experience of Democratization will be a valuable resource for students and scholars of Middle Eastern studies and politics, gender studies and cultural studies. © 2023 Metin Koca

Asymmetric dynamics in sovereign credit default swaps pricing: evidence from emerging countries
No full textPurpose This paper examines the relationship between sovereign credit default swaps (CDS) and several macroeconomic factors in an asymmetric setting and distinguishes between short-run and long-run impacts. Country-specific factors (e.g. equity index, international reserves, interest rate and industrial production) and global factors (e.g. US stock volatility [VIX], geopolitical risk and oil price) are the main explanatory variables. Design/methodology/approach This analysis uses a nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag approach that enables us to study both long-run and short-run dynamics. Findings This study results show that two country-specific factors (equity index and international reserves) and two global factors (VIX and oil price) are the most important factors and affect CDS asymmetrically. Research limitations/implications The asymmetric relationships between sovereign CDS and variables in bull and bear markets can also be studied. Consideration of asymmetries in the variance could also be a fruitful step taken for further research. Practical implications The findings imply that investors and portfolio managers should design their investment and hedging decisions related to government bonds by taking into account the existence of an asymmetric relationship. Social implications Moreover, policymakers can benefit from this asymmetric information in the timing of debt issuance. Synchronization Analysis of a Master-Slave BEC System via Active Control
Get PDFThis paper will focus on theoretical treatment of the dynamic of the Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) systems contained different external trapping potentials. We construct the phase space diagrams and Lyapunov Characteristic Exponents (LCEs) for master and slave systems depended on the system parameters and propose a nonlinear control for the synchronization of systems in their chaotic states. The synchronization is obtained in master-slave scheme for different initial values. Numerical results are also given to show the efficiency of the used control technique
