Institutionalization of Science Communication in Universities of Turkiye: A Qualitative Analysis of Central Communication Units
In contemporary policy documents and academic literature, the significance of institutional actors, particularly universities, in the communication and interaction processes between science and society is increasingly emphasized. This study aims to explore the science communication activities carried out by central communication units of universities in Türkiye, the distribution of these activities among sub-units within universities, the priorities and motivations for such activities, and the problems encountered in the institutionalization of science communication. Using a qualitative research method, semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with senior officials from 20 public and foundation universities in Türkiye, and a thematic analysis approach was utilized to analyze the coded data. The results indicate that while there are noteworthy differences between public and foundation universities, central communication units prioritize routine and one-way science communication activities categorized as PR and Marketing, while Public Engagement and Public Affairs activities involving dialogue are carried out to a more limited extent. The primary motivation behind universities’ science communication is meeting specific institutional strategic goals rather than creating public benefit. Furthermore, institutionalizing science communication in universities has been hindered by personnel and budget constraints in communication offices, the lack of institutional autonomy, and undefined duties and authorities of these units under the legal regulations of the higher education system
Zooming into Feminist Family Therapy Telesupervision: Experiences of Supervisors during the COVID-19 Pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic has altered the way feminist clinical supervisors provide supervision to family therapist trainees. This study explored the experiences of feminist family therapy supervisors who engaged in supervision remotely or had transitioned to virtual supervision. Using thematic analysis, four themes emerged from analysis of eight supervisors' answers to an online survey: using technology as a collaborative medium, self-of-the-supervisor process, intentional supervisory relationship, and supervisor responsibilities. In telling their stories, the supervisors described how they pivoted to support therapists, attended to parallel processes, and adjusted their own supervision techniques to maintain their feminist focus. The authors discuss implications of supervision adjustments and offer suggestions and considerations for remote feminist supervision and recommendations for future research

Just after the local elections in 2019, irregular migrants in Istanbul faced a months-long crackdown. The Ministry of Interior from the Justice and Development Party government (known as AK Party or AKP) gave Syrians until 20 August 2019 to return to the cities in which they were first registered. Although the time period was eventually extended, the internal controls for migrants became stricter. Migrants found themselves frequently stopped by police, and officers visited registration addresses to check if they were occupied. If irregularities were discovered, the official directive was that Syrians should be returned to the cities in which they were first registered. For non-Syrian migrants without registration, the result of police stops was often being confined to pre-detention centres. According to the Head of the Directorate General Management of Migration (DGMM) of the time, Abdullah Ayaz, “Operations in Istanbul target irregular migrants such as Afghans and Pakistanis. Even if Syrians are found without registration at all, they are not deported, unlike the claims in the media. It is not possible to issue deportation decisions legally about Syrians due to the conditions in Syria” (AA 2019). © 2023, The Author(s)
MCM-2 Levels as a Potential Biomarker for Predicting High-Risk Breast Cancer Patients According to TAILORx Classification
Background: The minichromosome maintenance protein-2 (MCM-2) is a more sensitive proliferation marker than Ki-67. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between MCM-2 and Oncotype DX recurrence score (ODX-RS) and determine an MCM-2 cutoff value in high-risk patients according to TAILORx risk categorization. Methods: Hormone receptor (HR) positive HER-2 negative early-stage breast cancer patients (pT1-2, pN0-N1, M0) who had ODX-RS were included in the study. According to the TAILORx trial, patients were divided into two groups with high (ODX-RS >= 26) and low risk (ODX-RS = 26). Results: The mean MCM-2 value was significantly higher in the high-risk group [(60.2 +/- 11.2 vs 34.4 +/- 13.8, p < 0.001)]. In the multivariate analysis, MCM-2 (OR: 1.27, 95% CI: 1.08-1.49, p = 0.003) and progesterone receptor (PR) levels <= 10% (OR: 60.9, 95% CI: 4.1-89.7, p = 0.003) were found to be independent factors indicating a high-risk group. A one-unit increase in MCM-2 level increased the likelihood of being in the high-risk group by 1.27 times. In the ROC curve analysis, the optimal MCM-2 cut-off level was 50 (AUC: 0.921, sensitivity: 86.7%, specificity: 96.0%, p < 0.001). Conclusion: Our study is the first study in the literature to investigate the relationship between ODX-RS and MCM-2 levels in HR-positive HER-2 negative early breast-cancer patients. In this study, MCM-2 was an independent risk factor in identifying high-risk patients according to TAILORx risk classification. MCM 2 cut-off value (50) may help the decision on adjuvant chemotherapy in patients where the Oncotype DX test cannot be performed
Myongji Üniversitesi Kütüphanesi Deneyimi: ERASMUS+ Personel Değişim Programının Üniversite Kütüphanecilerinin Mesleki Gelişimine Etkisi
University libraries are units that support education, training within the scope of research and development activities of universities. University libraries provide users with lifelong learning skills in the production, access and management of ever-increasing knowledge while providing access to current, reliable and universal knowledge to serve society. Librarians working in university libraries need to continue their professional development in order to meet the increasing information needs of users, to be aware of the changes in user expectations, to follow current developments and to provide better service to users. In this context, librarians, as university personnel, support their professional development by participating in various in-service training activities such as workshops, courses, seminars, and conferences both domestically and internationally. The ERASMUS+ Personnel Exchange Program is one of the activities for that enable university staff and librarians to acquire new experiences and competencies abroad. In this study, the impact of the ERASMUS+ Personnel Exchange Program on the professional development of librarians working in university libraries, how it affects the perspectives of librarians participating in the mobility, and the experiences gained in the Myongji University Library in South Korea, which was visited within the scope of the mobility, were shared. At the same time, South Korean traditions/customs were mentioned. © 2023 University and Research Librarians Association (UNAK). All rights reserved

Digital labour platforms and neoliberal governmentality: the case of platform workers in Turkey
Purpose The paper brings Foucauldian analysis of neoliberal governmentality in the discussion on the new forms of labour control within digital labour platforms. The aim of the paper is to reveal the effect of control mechanisms employed by platforms on entrepreneurial self within the context of work relations. Design/methodology/approach Drawing on in-depth interviews, conducted with workers under different service categories, the author undertook an extended case study of Armut.com, a digital labour platform operating in Turkey. Findings The study finds that competitive mechanisms employed by the platform have a considerable effect on worker self-commercialisation and self-rationalisation. This is dependent on different control mechanisms employed by the platform, based on different platform working models. Originality/value The research brings the worker subjectivities to the discussion of control within the scope of digital labour platforms. By undertaking a rare empirical study on this issue, it contributes to the theory of entrepreneurial self within the scope of work relations.Basic Research Program of the National Research University Higher School of Economics (HSE University)The author is thankful to Denis Strebkov, Andrey Shevchuk and anonymous reviewers for valuable feedback and to Christine Gerber for helpful comments on an earlier version. Prediction of global temperature anomaly by machine learning based techniques
In this work, anthropogenic and natural factors were used to evaluate and forecast climate change on a global scale by using a variety of machine-learning techniques. First, significance analysis using the Shapley method was conducted to compare the importance of each variable. Accordingly, it was determined that the equivalent CO2 concentration in the atmosphere was the most important variable, which was proposed as further evidence of climate change due to fossil fuel-based energy generation. Following that, a variety of machine learning approaches were utilized to simulate and forecast the temperature anomaly until 2100 based on six distinct scenarios. Compared to the preindustrial period, the temperature anomaly for the best-case scenario was found to increase a mean value of 1.23 degrees C and 1.11 degrees C for the mid and end of the century respectively. On the other hand, the anomaly was estimated for the worst-case scenario to reach to a mean value of 2.52 degrees C and 4.97 degrees C for the same periods. It was then concluded that machine learning approaches can assist researchers in predicting climate change and developing policies for national governments, such as committing firmly to renewable energy regulations
The segmented UEC Food-100 dataset with benchmark experiment on food detection
Automatic food classification systems have several interesting applications ranging from detecting eating habits, to waste food management and advertisement. When a food image has multiple food items, the food detection step is necessary before classification. This work challenges the food detection issue and it introduces to the research community the Segmented UEC Food-100 dataset, which expands the original UEC Food-100 database with segmentation masks. In the semantic segmentation experiment, the performance of YOLAC and DeeplabV3+ has been compared and YOLAC reached the best accuracy of 64.63% mIoU. In the instance segmentation experiment, YOLACT has been used due to its speed and high accuracy. The benchmark performance on the newly released Segmented UEC Food-100 dataset is 68.83% mAP. For comparison purpose, experiments have been run also on the UEC FoodPix Complete dataset of Okamoto et al. The database and the code will be available after publication
Anahtar Kelimeler: Siyasi Sloganlar, Arap Ayaklanmaları, Propaganda, Devrim, İnsanlarStarting in 2010, the Arab uprisings, a wave of mass protests and revolutions in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), were characterized by the prominent use of Political Slogans as powerful expressions of the revolutionaries' demands. This thesis aims to examine the significance and impact of Political Slogans during the Arab uprisings, emphasizing their role in shaping narratives and aspirations as well as mobilizing the masses. The thesis aims to study the socio-political perspective of slogans by studying their functions and categorizing them according to these functions. Based on their functions and categorizations, the thesis locates their striking characteristics from a socio-political point of view. Four hundred seventy-nine slogans were collected from sources such as previous research, the internet, YouTube, and TV channels. The collected slogans show a unique political understanding from the revolutionaries toward the country's political agenda. This understanding was transformed through slogans, which called for overthrowing the regimes because it was the only way for the countries' political, social, and economic changes. These slogans had an influential role in mobilizing people and spreading awareness among revolutionaries. Its shared sentiment, timing, and unstructured form contributed to the uprisings' success in mobilizing the masses. Keywords: Political Slogans, Arab Uprisings, Propaganda, Revolution, The Peopl
