First measurement of the forward rapidity gap distribution in pPb collisions at ?sNN=8.16 TeV
For the first time at LHC energies, the forward rapidity gap spectra from proton-lead collisions for both proton and lead dissociation processes are presented. The analysis is performed over 10.4 units of pseudorapidity at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of ffisffi than in previous measurements of diffractive production in proton-nucleus collisions. For lead dissociation processes, which correspond to the pomeron-lead event topology, the EPOS-LHC generator predictions are a factor of 2 below the data, but the model gives a reasonable description of the rapidity gap spectrum shape. For the pomeron-proton topology, the EPOS-LHC, QGSJET II, and HIJING predictions are all at least a factor of 5 lower than the data. The latter effect might be explained by a significant contribution of ultraperipheral photoproduction events mimicking the signature of diffractive processes. These data may be of significant help in understanding the high energy limit of quantum chromodynamics and for modeling cosmic ray air showers
The emergence of Mediterraneanism discourse in modern Turkish architecture and the special position of Cengiz Bektaş
This article focuses on the emergence of the discourse on Mediterraneanism in Turkish architecture of mid-20th century in relation to the precedent discussions and works by European and American architects from the earlier decades. The former attempts of the modernist architects from Mediterranean countries in associating Mediterranean vernacular cultures with modernism and their basic motives are briefly discussed in the first part of the article to be able to portray the difference of the Turkish case. The emergence of the discourse of Mediterraneanism in mid-century Turkish architectural milieus is then discussed through some articles in the prominent journals of the period, underlining its relationship with the development of mass-tourism. Cengiz Bektaş is presented as a distinct and significant figure within this context who made extensive studies on Mediterranean vernacular cultures of Anatolia and had an original approach to the issue. Following the legacy of the Blue Anatolianists, Bektaş sees the Anatolian geography as a holistic cultural landscape and its vernacular architectures as the main sources of inspiration for contemporary architects, rather than pragmatic tools to fuel tourism industry. The article displays how his truly regionalist and contextualist approach to the Mediterranean differs from earlier and contemporary discourses in Turkey and stays closer to early 20th century precedents in Europe, through a reading of his original publications from the 1970s and later decades. © 2023, Istanbul Teknik Universitesi, Faculty of Architecture. COLOR, CLASS, AND GENDER: THE SOCIAL CONSTRUCTION OF WOMEN AND BEYOND IN ASGHAR FARHADI CINEMA
This study interrogates the films of Asghar Farhadi, who contributed to the international prominence of Iranian cinema, with a mixed-method approach in terms of women's representation. Quantitative data based on content analysis were deepened by textual analysis to negotiate the positive and negative meanings attributed to femininity in Asghar Farhadi's films. The research disclosed that all the female lead characters in the films are portrayed as passive characters who spends her days doing chores within the framework of the power relations determined by the patriarchal social structure. The social position of Iranian women in the patriarchal order was questioned by representing the female characters as economically and emotionally dependent on the males. It is discovered that the female lead characters wearing light-colored costumes are depicted as "honorable women", whereas the female lead characters wearing dark-colored costumes are depicted as "immoral women". These results demonstrated that the roles traditionally attributed to women in Iranian society were reinforced through the color tones
The relationship between emotional self-efficacy and post travmatic growth in female patients diagnosed with breast cancer
Nowcasting Turkish Food Inflation Using Daily Online Prices
This study uses a sample of daily food prices scraped from retail chains’ websites for the period from July 2018 to December 2020, comprising over 5.9 million data points. Using these food prices, we construct 132 food price subindexes compatible with official data published by the Turkish Statistical Institute (Turkstat), which are published only once a month. We then use the online food price subindexes to calculate the primary food inflation rate. We find that changes in our online food price index and the Turkstat data are closely related. The daily online food price index is then used to nowcast official food and headline inflation. Our results show that the online index successfully nowcasts the official inflation rates, providing results considerably earlier than the official rate is announced. We also observe that the implementation of the first coronavirus restrictions in Turkey in early 2020 caused online food prices to jump, whereas official food prices did not experience the same spike. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.This research has not been supported by any grants
A dosimetric comparison for SBRT plans of localized prostate cancer between Cyberknife and Varian Truebeam STX device
As the Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT) approach began to increase in treating patients with localized prostate cancer, it became necessary to investigate which methods used in practice were better. The aim of this study is to perform a dosimetric comparison of the advantages and disadvantages of SBRT treatments for localized prostate cancer delivered by CyberKnife (CK) and Varian Truebeam STX (FF and FFF). Seventeen in-termediate and high-risk patients with localized prostate cancer were included in the study. SBRT plans for the CK system and Varian Truebeam STX systems with and without Flattening Filters (Tru-FF and Tru-FFF) were prepared for each patient. Plans prepared for each patient were planned at a fraction dose of 6.7 Gy at 6 MV energy and a target dose of 33.5 Gy in 5 fractions. For all plans, cumulative dose-volume histograms (DVHs) were generated for target volumes and organs at risk (OAR). The maximum doses of PTV (41 Gy) in CK plans are higher than the maximum doses (35 Gy) in VMAT plans prepared with Tru-FF or Tru-FFF beams. The mean dose of the rectal wall (10.06 ?? 2.40Gy for CK) is still relatively low compared to other plans (13.46 ?? 2.16 Gy for Tru-FF and 13.61 ?? 2.32 Gy for Tru-FFF). The bladder wall (14 Gy for CK, 26 Gy for Tru-FF and Tru-FFF) and femoral head (6.8 Gy for CK, 9 Gy for Tru-FF and 9.4 Gy Tru-FFF) doses were also lower for CK plans. The CK plans provide better tumour control due to low doses in critical organs and high target doses than the Tru-FF or Tru-FFF plans. It was observed that CK and VMAT plans for SBRT with 6 MV photon beams provided acceptable results in term of treatment planning criteria such as Conformity Index and Homogeneity Index. It is recom-mended to use a target tracking system to provide an accurate and reliable SBRT treatment with VMAT and CK techniques
ESG activity and bank lending during financial crises
This paper explores how banks' environmental, social, and governance (ESG) activities affect their lending during financial crises. We use a sample of European listed banks with available ESG scores from 2002 to 2020 and consider the global financial crisis of 2007-2009 and the European sovereign debt crisis of 2010-2012. We estimate a two-step system GMM dynamic panel data model and also address potential endogeneity with instrumental variable (IV) and difference-in-difference (DiD) estimations. We find that lending falls to a lesser extent for banks with higher ESG scores during crisis times. Our findings are robust to using alternative ESG rating providers. An investigation of the different potential channels shows that, during crises, banks more engaged in ESG activities are less affected in terms of credit risk, asset risk, and profitability. They also face a lower reduction in market funding, allowing them to downsize to a lesser extent during crises, and their deposit rates do not increase as much as in less ESG-engaged banks. A deeper investigation reveals that our findings mainly hold for banks focused on traditional lending and deposit activities and are essentially driven by the environmental pillar component of ESG scores and the global financial crisis of 2007-2009
