Evaluation on personal data processing activities in digital platforms under personal data protection law
Bu tez, dijital platformlarda kişisel verilerin işlenmesi konusunu ele almaktadır. İlk bölümde, kişisel veri kavramı ve özel nitelikli kişisel veriler açıklanarak, kişisel verilerin tanımı yapılmaktadır. Ayrıca, dijital platform kavramı üzerinde durulmakta ve dijital platformların kişisel veri kullanımı incelenmektedir. Dijital platformların 6698 sayılı Kişisel Verilerin Korunması Kanunu (“KVKK”) uyarınca veri sorumlusu statüsü, veri sorumlularının yükümlülüklerine ilişkin konular ele alınmaktadır.
İkinci bölüm, dijital platformlarda kişisel verilerin işlenmesi bakımından özel konuları kapsamaktadır. Bu bölümde yurt dışına veri aktarımı, çerezler ile kişisel veri işleme faaliyetleri, platformların pazarlama faaliyetleri ve ilgili kişilerin hakları konuları işlenmektedir. Özellikle 12 Mart 2024 değişiklikleri sonrası yurt dışına veri aktarım kuralları ve Avrupa Birliği Genel Veri Koruma Tüzüğü (General Data Protection Regulation (“GDPR”) ile KVKK’daki ilgili kişi haklarının karşılaştırılması yapılmaktadır.
Üçüncü bölümde, dijital platformlarda kişisel veri güvenliği üzerinde durulmaktadır. Bu bölüm, dijital platformlardaki kişisel verilerin güvenliği için alınabilecek teknik ve idari tedbirleri Kişisel Verileri Koruma Kurulu’nun (“Kurul”) kararları ışığında dijital platformların mahremiyet endişelerini ve kişisel veri ihlal bildirimlerini kapsamaktadır.
Sonuç bölümünde yapılan çalışmaların genel bir değerlendirilmesi yapılmakta ve dijital platformlarda kişisel veri işleme faaliyetleri için öneriler sunulmaktadır
A Qualitative Study on the Marital Experiences of Childfree Couples in Turkey
Voluntary childlessness (VC), or being childfree, refers to intentionally choosing not to become a parent. VC is a growing trend that influences couple relations and individual life trajectories in many countries. However, very few studies have examined this emerging phenomenon in non-Western contexts. To contribute to a contextualized understanding of VC and increase the diversity of voices in the literature, the present qualitative study aimed to explore marital experiences of childfree couples in Turkey where strong pronatalist family-oriented norms and a conservative gender order coexist with increasing individualism and egalitarian practices. The sample was recruited through convenience strategies and consisted of 5 married childfree couples who were educated professionals with an age range of 25-47. The data was collected through separate semi-structured individual interviews with each partner. An inductive thematic analysis of the interviews revealed 4 main themes: 1) Having children is a challenging experience, 2) By being childfree, we can build our marriage on togetherness and equality, 3) For us, being childfree is a mutual, yet indefinite choice, 4) A childfree marriage comes with social pressure. The results showed that childfree couples seek to build a non-traditional marital relationship and live an autonomous life. The wives seemed to be pressured and questioned more than the husbands. The study indicates that being childfree involves unique socio-cultural, gender, and couple processes. Implications for clinicians working with childfree individuals and couples in strongly pronatalist and traditional contexts like Turkey are discussed
A Mathematical Programming Approach for IoT-Enabled, Energy-Efficient Heterogeneous Wireless Sensor Network Design and Implementation
The Internet of Things (IoT) is playing a pivotal role in transforming various industries, and Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are emerging as the key drivers of this innovation. This research explores the utilization of a heterogeneous network model to optimize the deployment of sensors in agricultural settings. The primary objective is to strategically position sensor nodes for efficient energy consumption, prolonged network lifetime, and dependable data transmission. The proposed strategy incorporates an offline model for placing sensor nodes within the target region, taking into account the coverage requirements and network connectivity. We propose a two-stage centralized control model that ensures cohesive decision making, grouping sensor nodes into protective boxes. This grouping facilitates shared resource utilization, including batteries and bandwidth, while minimizing box number for cost-effectiveness. Noteworthy contributions of this research encompass addressing connectivity and coverage challenges through an offline deployment model in the first stage, and resolving real-time adaptability concerns using an online energy optimization model in the second stage. Emphasis is placed on the energy efficiency, achieved through the sensor consolidation within boxes, minimizing data transmission hops, and considering energy expenditures in sensing, transmitting, and active/sleep modes. Our simulations on an agricultural farmland highlights its practicality, particularly focusing on the sensor placement for measuring soil temperature and humidity. Hardware tests validate the proposed model, incorporating parameters from the real-world implementation to enhance calculation accuracy. This study provides not only theoretical insights but also extends its relevance to smart farming practices, illustrating the potential of WSNs in revolutionizing sustainable agriculture
Systemic Individual Therapy: Therapeutic Change from the Perspective of Clients and Therapists
Therapeutic change is a well-studied construct in psychotherapy process and outcome studies, providing the basis for how psychotherapy practices are effective in individuals wellbeing. The current study explores the experiences of therapists and clients regarding how therapeutic change is experienced in systemic individual therapy. 12 therapists (1 men, 11 women) and 12 clients (2 men, 10 women) were recruited as participants from two training centers. Both therapists' and clients' experiences are investigated with semi-structured interviews using thematic analysis (TA). Results revealed three main themes for clients: Sense-making the Problems Through Relational Awareness, Acceptance in Relationships, and Manifesting the Differentiated Self in Relationship. Regarding therapists' perspective, the results yielded three main themes: Going Beyond One-to-one Relationship in Therapy, Increasing Relational Awareness, Shift in Clients' Attitudes Towards Boundaries with Significant Others.. The themes were discussed in the context of the systems theory literature, limitations, strengths, future research directions, and clinical implications. [GRAPHICS]
Machine Learning Analysis of Thermal Performance Indicator of Heat Exchangers with Delta Wing Vortex Generators
In this work, the design features of delta wing vortex generators (DWVGs) on the thermo-hydraulic performance of heat exchangers are investigated using machine learning. Reynolds numbers, attack angle, length, wing-to-width ratio, and relative pitch ratio of DWVGs were used as descriptor variables, with Nusselt numbers, friction factors, and performance evaluation criterion (PEC) serving as target variables. Decision tree classification revealed the pathways leading to high or low values of the performance variables. Among many of those pathways, it was found that high Reynolds numbers (between 8160 and 9800) and high attack angles (greater than or equal to 47.5 degrees) lead to high Nusselt numbers. On the other hand, an attack angle between 41 degrees and 60 degrees, a Reynolds number less than 8510, and a wing-to-width ratio greater than or equal to 0.4 causes a high friction factor. Finally, the PEC is likely to enhance when the Reynolds number is higher than or equal to 10,300 and the attack angle is between 47.5 degrees and 60 degrees. In addition to the decision tree analysis, SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) analysis (a part of explainable machine learning) was also applied to reveal the importance of design features and their positive and negative effects on the target variables. For example, for a Nusselt number as the target variable, the Reynolds number was found to be the most influential variable, followed by the attack angle and the relative pitch ratio, all of which had a positive impact on the target. It was then concluded that machine learning methods could help provide strong insights into the configuration design features of heat exchangers in DWVGs to improve their efficiency and save energy
Air-Water Two-Phase Flow Dynamics Analysis in Complex U-Bend Systems through Numerical Modeling
This study aims to provide insights into the intricate interactions between gas and liquid phases within flow components, which are pivotal in various industrial sectors such as nuclear reactors, oil and gas pipelines, and thermal management systems. Employing the Eulerian-Eulerian approach, our computational model incorporates interphase relations, including drag and non-drag forces, to analyze phase distribution and velocities within a complex U-bend system. Comprising two horizontal-to-vertical bends and one vertical 180-degree elbow, the U-bend system's behavior concerning bend geometry and airflow rates is scrutinized, highlighting their significant impact on multiphase flow dynamics. The study not only presents a detailed exposition of the numerical modeling techniques tailored for this complex geometry but also discusses the results obtained. Detailed analyses of local void fraction and phase velocities for each phase are provided. Furthermore, experimental validation enhances the reliability of our computational findings, with close agreement observed between computational and experimental results. Overall, the study underscores the efficacy of the Eulerian approach with interphase relations in capturing the complex behavior of the multiphase flow in U-bend systems, offering valuable insights for hydraulic system design and optimization in industrial applications.Istanbul Technical UniversityNo Statement Availabl
Observation of J=? decays to e plus e - e plus e - and e plus e - ? plus ? -
Using a data sample of 4.481 x 108 psi o3686 thorn events collected with the BESIII detector, we report the first observation of the four-lepton-decays J=psi -> e thorn e-e thorn e- and J=psi -> e thorn e-mu thorn mu- utilizing the process psi o3686 thorn -> pi thorn pi-J=psi. The branching fractions are determined to be 1/25.48 0.31ostat thorn 0.45osyst thorn x 10-5 and 1/23.53 0.22ostat thorn 0.13osyst thorn x 10-5, respectively. The results are consistent with theoretical predictions. No significant signal is observed for J=psi -> mu thorn mu-mu thorn mu-, and an upper limit on the branching fraction is set at 1.6 x 10-6 at the 90% confidence level. A CP asymmetry observable is constructed for the first two channels, which is measured to be o-0.012 0.054 0.010 thorn and o0.062 0.059 0.006 thorn , respectively. Twitch Developers as a ‘company-led community’
This chapter explores the dynamics of Twitch Developers, a community attached to the live-streaming platform Twitch. Twitch extensions, live apps that enhance live streams with visual and interactive layers, are developed by third-party developers and managed by Twitch. The motivations of complementors, developers creating Twitch extensions, include vocational promises of skill development, career advancement, and a sense of connection. Twitch, leveraging its powerful position, commodifies these ambitions, leading to a concept called deep engagement. Deep engagement is driven by the platform’s profit-seeking nature and involves collaboration and cooperation of third-party developers with the platform and other developers. Twitch benefits from this high level of engagement in terms of content, functionality improvement, and interlinking products and data with its parent company Amazon. In contrast to the marketing-focused term of community-led companies, this chapter critically examines firm-initiated communities in terms of platformization, collaboration, and political economy. By conducting a thematic and hermeneutic analysis of online material posted by Twitch and Twitch employees, this chapter tries to unearth how Twitch employs its platform powers. Growing Out of Trauma: An Examination of Protective Factors Predicting Posttraumatic Growth among Syrian Refugees in Turkey
As the Syrian crisis has reached its 10th year, this paper explores posttraumatic growth and the related factors among Syrian refugees in Turkey, with the aim of having a better understanding of the predictors of PTG and the risk factors that may play a role in the inhibition of the growth. In this cross-sectional study, 217 displaced Syrian refugees completed the Post Traumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI), Harvard Trauma Questionnaire (HTQ), Brief COPE, General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES), PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5), and sociodemographic information form by a self-reported online survey. Risk and protective factors were associated in bivariate analysis with growth p 0.05). In conclusion, the findings have provided valuable insight into the domains of the growth among Syrian refugees and discussed both clinical and research-based future recommendations that could be made to improve the mental health of the refugees based on the obtained results. © The Author(s) 2024
Breaking barriers: How race shapes service expectations across actors and contexts
This study investigates the impact of race on Customer Service Quality Expectations (SQE) using the Similarity-Attraction Perspective within the context of all interacting service actors, including customers, service providers, and other customers. A thorough literature review of racial effects in service environments is followed by a 2 (Service Actor Race: White vs. Black) x 2 (Service Actor Role: Service Provider vs. Other Customers) x 2 (Context: Experience vs. Credence) experimental study with Black and White customers. The study revealed that customer Perceptions of Service Actor Similarity (PSIM) mediate the influence of matching Customer Race and Service Actor Race on SQE. Results indicate: 1) that SQE is higher when customers are in the presence of other Service Actors perceived to be of their own race, and 2) that the effect varies by Service Actor Role and Service Type. This is an initial attempt to explore the impact of race on Experience and Credence services by adopting a Similarity-Attraction framework considering all participants in the service environment.
